Bonanza - Episode 18 - A House Divided - Ben tries to uncover the reason gold and silver exporter, Frederick Kyle, has befriended Little Joe before the shadowy businessman's hidden Civil War agenda tears Virginia City, and the Cartwright family, apart.
A House Divided
Director: Lewis Allen
Writer: Al C. Ward
Stars: Lorne Greene, Pernell Roberts, Dan Blocker
Genre: Western
Country: USA
Language: English
Release Date: 16 January 1960 USA
Filming Locations: Paramount Studios - 5555 Melrose Avenue, Hollywood, Los Angeles, California, USA
Storyline:
Ben tries to uncover the reason gold and silver exporter, Frederick Kyle, has befriended Little Joe before the shadowy businessman's hidden Civil War agenda tears Virginia City, and the Cartwright family, apart
Reviews:
"Cameron Mitchell comes to Virginia City in this episode of Bonanza entitled after Lincoln's famous quote from the Bible that A House Divided cannot stand. In this case it's the residence of the Ponderosa that is shaking because of Mitchell's presence.
This is one of the few, maybe the only episode of Bonanza that dealt with the Civil War. As followers of the show know Lorne Greene's three wives hailed from different parts of the country. Pernell Roberts's mother was from New England, Dan Blocker's from the Missouri border state area, and Michael Landon's from New Orleans.
When Mitchell comes to town he accidentally on purpose meets up with Michael Landon and told him that he knew his mother way back when they were living in New Orleans together. Fans of Bonanza also know that to mention the mothers of any of the boys is to strike a vulnerable chord. With Landon in tow and seemingly the Cartwright imprimatur on his actions, Mitchell tries enlisting the Comstock Lode silver mine owners to the Confederate cause.
Of course all this causes discord on the Ponderosa and more I won't go into. Let's say Lorne Greene had his hands full keeping the family together.
This was one of the most memorable episodes from early Bonanza where politics nearly renders the Cartwrights asunder." Written by bkoganbing on IMDb.com

They wanted Pernell in Gunsmoke in 1955 but back then he couldn't ride a horse. He had an audition with John Rich the casting agent, who said he was perfect for the part and was brilliant and he wanted him but the horse riding wasn't there so he didn't get it...The next time he saw Pernell was when they worked on Bonanza by which time he learned how to ride! Just a bit of info for anyone interested.

CBS wanted John Wayne to play Matt, but he didn't want to end his movie career for a TV job which might not last. Back in the 1950s, major actors either worked in films or in TV, not both. Movie stars could guest star on extremely popular shows like "I Love Lucy," or appear in Variety shows like "Ed Sullivan," but that was it. Wayne recommended his friend James Arness, and he got the job. Wayne introduces the first episode of "Gunsmoke" as a favor to Arness and CBS. If Wayne had taken the job, there would have been no "True Grit," for example, and "Gunsmoke" would have had to end at least one or two seasons early (18th or 19th Season) due to Wayne's poor health. Since Dennis Weaver was the first actor signed for "Gunsmoke," perhaps there was another role in the original pilot script which was cut. I can't see Roberts as "Doc Adams," and Quint Asper (Burt Reynolds) came along years later.

Not a very knowledgeable statement I'm afraid. Nothing signifies unity and totality more readily than President Trump's desire to Make America Great Again. It was incredible how far he succeeded in accomplishing that goal in the few short years he had to work with. The pre-ccivil war handguns would have been the Remington 1861, a single action cap and ball model; Colt's 1851 Navy, the outside of the barrel having 6 flat sides, was also made in the Army version, which had the conventional, round outer barrel barrel. Their lever action rifles would have been Henrys, which were produced between 1960-66. As its name suggests, the Winchester 73 appeared almost 10 years later

Of course I really like this fine series but though Little oe's temper and constant fighting with someone, or using that damn mouthiness may have gotten settled down in later seasons, it is irritating. By far I think the character Adam shines as the most intelligent, perceptive and if in a foxhole, he is the one I'd want with me. Adam is one of the greatest & finest characters I have seen on the screen. He is very balanced so well...great mind, sense of humor, very kiind and usually can spot a fool or trouble a mile away.

The Confederacy. The War Between the States was a lot more about taxing the South to pay for the industrialization of the North. All nations in the world have had slaves at some point, not just the USA. Lincoln didn't issue the Emancipation Proclamation until two full years into the War - he wasn't that anxious to free them. He even said that if he could unite the country without freeing a single slave, he would do so.
@azahora22

@@watchgoose Frederick Douglass was the one who pushed for the freeing of slaves and a lot of other things lincoln has been given credit for. @@watchgoose the difference with colonial slavery was the concept that these people were not quite a person. At 47:24, the "drafts of trade..cotton, tobacco..." The story here is profound; one that to this very day, is unresolved for many people. One implicit historical point is left out, hinted in this scene, and avoided in the rest of the episode. I can understand why David Dortort did not just say it: this was a popular, family show. The subject avoided would upset the mis-en scene. A House Divided indeed. Drafts of trade, indeed, of a terrible, despicable commodity. Too much, for Bonanza. I am certain, Pernell Roberts was troubled by this episode. Cameron Mitchell was a greatly underrated actor. His drama could be intensely engaging--as in Martin Ritt's 1957 movie, No Down Payment.

@D Sullivan The war was about control of southern cash crops, especially cotton. It made the South the wealthiest section of the country by 1860. The profit and trade for cotton fueled northern industries and the US Treasury as well as international trade thanks to the textile mills of Europe. Even Wm T Sherman knew what the war was really about! This short telegram, from US General William Tecumseh Sherman to Abraham Lincoln, is dated December 22, 1864. “I beg to present you as a Christmas gift the city of Savannah with 150 heavy guns and plenty of ammunition and also about 25,000 bales of COTTON,” Sherman wrote. English author Charles Dickens (author of A Christmas Carol and Oliver Twist) said: “The Northern onslaught against Southern slavery is a specious piece of humbug designed to mask their desire for the economic control of the Southern states.” Southern states contributed approximately 70 percent of the government revenue.
