German national anthem has a wonderful prayer-like quality. It is a hymn in the highest sense. In spite of the horrors of the past, Germany is a world leader in many areas of science etc. and if war comes again, God forbid!, I hope the Germans are on our side!

Ironically it's an Austrian melody, but then again Austria is German as well, just an Independent German State similar to Switzerland. All Germany is is a Unification of once independent German states. Wurttemberg, Hanover, Brandenburg, Bavaria, Saxony, etc etc. hehe

***** ethnically Austria is diferent of Germany, not exactly the same thing....
@Alte.Kameraden10 жыл бұрын
ana v. Austria is as much German as Bavaria. Bavaria is different than Brandenburg, even the language is slightly different for example. Austria is a "German" state. It just isn't part of Germany, and like a lot of regions in "Germany" it has it's own history prior to the modern age. In fact during the Wiemar Republic.a number of states within Germany wanted to separate and go their own way because of how bad the Government was performing. In fact ironically it wasn't until Nazi Germany did Germany actually "Become" Germany. Similar to how the American Civil War turned the United States into "Thee" United States rather than just being a union of stats with a centralized Government. Similar to the United States the German Empire often people still referred to themselves by the region they were from more than the country. As an American someone would say before the 1860s that they're a Virginian and were loyal to Virginia before they were to the United States.

@ Norman Parssons The problem is that in Germany you are allways confronted with the horrible past we had and that lead to the second World War. If you say "I am proud to be german" - even if you mention it in the way americans oder british people do this (a normal kind of pride for your nation), you may be sued by others and called a Nazi. I think we have still to find a "healthy" kind of national pride...and that still may be a long, long way. Germany is a very democratic and world-open country nowadays...most of the Germans are very open-minded and nice and friendly people....but we still do have a problem with our history and over the years the military got less respect from the citizens - for no reason. It seems a little bit that we are still on our way to find a national identity.

Germany never wanted war with France or the West. A German Heritage Texan, a Russian and a Frenchman sat around a campfire one evening. The Frenchman said once my people were powerful and war hungry. Now we are peaceful and loving. The Russian and German Texan both agreed. The Russian said once my people were hunted, killed and few in numbers. Now we are powerful and everywhere. The Frenchman agreed and the German Texas said " We have not played Cowboys and Russians yet".

he´s talking about the history of the bendlerblock (the place where the soldiers stand). It´s the same place where Hitler gave his criminal orders to his officers, but also the (not successful^^) assassination of hitler (planed by Oberst Graf von Staufenberg) was planed there. And von Staufenberg and other members of the resitance where executed on this place!
