I was a self-taught electronics tech. I couldn't afford college, so after high-school I bought a cheap Radio-Shack multimeter, dragged home a few broken TV's and radios, then read the book cover to cover a few times as I learned all about those old TV's and radios. Then I bought a used o'scope and a copy of Horowitz and Hill The Art of Electronics. After 6 months of working at it every day I went and applied for a tech job, took a tech test and got the job. Over the next 30 years I worked at HP, IBM, SONY and others, ultimately retiring as a senior electronics R&D tech. The cost of my technical education in cash was essentially nothing. It all started with Grob's Basic Electronics. These days I'd use the Internet to learn so much more, so much faster and better. But I'd still recommend starting with a copy of Grob.

1.What is the cheapest Hot Air Rework Station I can buy that properly maintains high temperature for doing BGA type soldering and desoldering if I'm using Lead Free Solder? Thank you! 2.Also how do I maintain the original tip of the soldering iron as much as possible, avoiding as much as i can the need to use a paste to tin the tip again? Thank you!
@johnwest7993

@@encapsulatio, I'm sorry, but I don't pay much attention to tools below the professional level these days, and industrial grade gear designed for full-time use is much too expensive for anything else, so I have no advice for you other than to dead legitimate reviews from knowledgeable people before you spend the money on tools and equipment. A day or 2 of research will save you money and frustration in the end. As far as tinning, I'd always re-coat my iron with solder the moment I wipe it off, before I put it back in the holder. To maintain the cladding on the tip you must keep it from being exposed to the air. Keeping solder on its surface does that. Solder is ridiculously expensive these days, but so are tips, so I keep the tip covered with solder and only wipe it a moment before I solder a connection. Do NOT wipe your soldering iron tip then put it in the holder and leave it there without a fresh coating of solder on it. You can burn through the tip 's coating in a real hurry that way.

@@johnwest7993 Thank you for answering. How do I determine precisely when a tip needs to be replaced? Also do I just buy a new tip or do I buy tinning paste and re-tin it that way?

I have watched a few videos of yours and I am very impressed with your presentation. I always had a great interest to understanding electronics since youth, but never had an opportunity nor understood where to start back in my younger days. Now I am learning by scratch by the examples you have been giving to your audience. Thank you, Friend. God bless.

In 1998 Basic Electronic 101 was my very first college course, and we used this exact textbook. The course was so difficult I flunked out.

We used the fourth edition when I was studying electronics servicing (1979-81). While this gave me the basics, I learned troubleshooting with Practical CB Radio Troubleshooting and Repair by David Norman. I wasn't a CB radio technician but it taught me enough general troubleshooting skills to fix practically anything. Eventually, I moved to a career in instrumentation and control and I credit these two books with giving me a head start. (",)

Resistor color coding is still relevant depending on the type of electronic you are referring to. Big appliances such as washing machines, refrigerators, audio such as self-contained amplifiers, and audio control pods are still using color-coded resistors as there are lot of space on the circuit board, and most importantly are cheap.

Good lord, that book brings the memories flooding back, because thats the book I used back in 1976 when I went to DeVry Tech, in Woodbridge New Jersey for the Basic electronics course. ET not the EET course. I probably still have my copy of that version of that book somewhere in my pile of ham radios and electronics junk. LOL. I had just immigrated to the states and I decided I wanted to learn electronics and went to tech school. At that point the school had just started a microprocessor course. Imagine that. Nowadays I do electronics work in factories. I work in a circuit board assembly house. From the comments I see all the techies and nerds have a copy of this book. LOL.

This is one of the best books on Basic Electronics if you are seriously interested in Electronics Engineering but don't know where to start. I won't recommend this as an introductory book to Electronics. This book isn't suitable to those who looks to learn Electronics as a hobby or for the purpose of repairing gadgets. It covers the fundamentals of Electronics theory with proper maths and calculations. Yes, it's more of a thoery book but very solid on that part. If you are an absolute fresher, start learning Electronics with "Make Electronic" series by Charles Platt. Forrest Mimms books are also pretty good for that purpose.
