The reason the eggs in the US are kept in the refrigerator is because they are washed half to death with chemicals coz people there won't buy eggs with "dirt" on them and this strips their natural coating that stays in place after the egg is laid and thus reducing their shelf life. In Kenya and most of Africa, we leave the eggs in their natural state and thus can last longer without the need refrigeration.

People in other countries do not buy eggs with dirt on them. I live in the US for over 35 yrs. I came from another country where we eat fresh eggs lay the same day or a couple days before. There is no refrigeration of eggs, fruits, or vegetables in most cases. There were supermarkets, not many as now. Fish is often purchase right out of the sea. Pork, beef, goat, lamb might be refrigerated. Often, 20:40 they are use the same day you purchase them from the butcher. Poultry is purchased alive, unalike, and cook the same day or the next day if there is a function such as a wedding or party. Most foods are not stock up in refrigerator, at least in the warm countries where I grew up until mid teens before moving to the US. Not everyone had a refrigerator, especially in the deep countryside. Some people has icebox, not to store, but hold temporarily.
