That was winter melon. We often use it in soups with pork. Winter melon is also used for lao po cakes or also known as wife cake. We also have candied winter melon for Chinese New Year. There are other ways to prepare it.

In the normal supermarket, beef is 40-50rmb/500g, pork is 10-20rmb/500g. The one you went have higher price. I think the beef there is imported from Australia or USA and the pork is from a special black pig, which are the reasons why they sell expensive.
