I really don't understand when ppl say he looks scared or doesn't look happy. I think he actually looks comfortable with his owner moving, touching and cutting his fur, looks like he's very well behaved and used to this. Dogs don't enjoy getting their nails trimmed either but you have to do it and teach them that it's ok. I love when ppl take care of their dogs like this, with love. Some ppl don't do anything with or for their dogs. People always want to have something to complain about even stupid things like this. Please do more videos like this, it''s very educating and entertaining seeing the transformation. Thanks.

People are using human psychology and assume the dog is scared. This little guy is very calm.

He doesn't even need a groomer's lead to keep him on the table. Yeah he isn't "comfortable" but he is secure his groomer knows what she is doing and obviously feels secure in her care. I have dogs super anxious on the table or bath but I try to make that bond where I can have the dog approach me on check-in. They might pant or have separation anxiety or not know what I am trying to do with all the noisy tools, but they aren't miserable. They would be more miserable not being groomed at all with matting.

He doesn't love to be brushed , but he loves me so he lets me do it. Do you look happy when you go the the dentist? I bet not. So would you not go the the dentist, because it doesn't make you happy? Long coated dogs need to be groomed or they will be a filthy matted , flea infested mess. Look at the dog I rescued and groomed, does it look happy as a matted mess? Better they be not happy for an hour while they are groomed.

+Patty Wirth I've noticed people don't know as much as they think they do when it comes to animal behavior. You're little guy doesn't look thrilled, but I don't see any major signs of stress or discomfort. He's just tolerating it. Not every all dogs are labs who literally don't care and wag their tails 24/7.

+Patty Wirth That is so true. I have a poodle. Could you imagine her not being groomed?? Impossible. Like you say. An hour or two of grooming to keep them healthy will also keep them happy.

Thank you. First thing you should do with your Pom is to put him on a table. That solves a lot of problems. Use a muzzle if you have to, but make sure you are not hurting him and if you are not, ignore the attitude and keep brushing. Just start with the parts they are not so sensitive about, such as the back and sides.

"He's letting me know he's done with grooming. There is a little female dog in the next room he wants to have a discussion with. About breeding." Ha, ha, ha!!! Good one Patty! I bet he does, the little devil. I like the way you trimmed the ruff close to his face, with scissors parallel to hair direction. Very clever! I would not have thought of doing that. I just groomed a Pom for the first time for a neighbor. OMG he had 400 fleas on the ones I counted, not the others that were jumping out of his cut fur! Out of pity, I shaved him down leaving a small teddy bear face and pom pom tail - the owner wanted a 'funny cut' and very thinned out for summer in LA. I did it to get rid of the fleas, it made my skin crawl to see them. Now I have fleas in the house! I wish I had seen your video so that the ruff I left him with looked more natural. Anyway, poor guy is on flea meds now (I insisted on that with my neighbor), and got a good scrubbing. He was so happy! Any tips for thinning out hair on a Pom would be welcome. We get so hot in summer in LA - 105 F sometimes and muggy! I like to thin out dogs so they are cooler.

+Lass-in Angeles Hey are you on Facebook? Can I friend you? I have a different name on my Facebook, that I don't want to leave here. As for grooming, you can use thinning shears, but if you just shave the chest and belly it really helps them to stay cooler and they can lay on concrete or tile and cool off. You can do an intermediate trim like on Jitters, she is around an inch and a half.

+Patty Wirth Don't worry Patty, until a short time earlier, I did not know it either. If you click on the person's name or moniker under the video they posted, it takes you to their home page (like a Facebook page), where you see all the videos they posted and can select what to watch. On this Home Page, look at the menu options on top, and click on 'ABOUT'. This brings up a Private Message box where you type in your email and this goes straight to that person's email listed with KZbin but not disclosed publicly. This is a private msg only they will see. You have the option to turn it off, as I did, since I was getting spammed by ads, or leave it on. If you want to reach me, please email lass.in.angeles@gmail.com

+Patty Wirth I understand, people can be a little ridiculous when it comes to the Internet. I was just going to ask if you think my Pom's coat will grow back to its full length. He wasn't necessarily shaved but he was clipped very, very short. He was so fluffy before I took him there! His full coat was in, so I was very upset when I picked him up (always was told not to shave/cut Pom's hair short). It's been about 5 months and he's maybe grown back about 3/4 of it back & he's fluffy again... just not as fluffy as before. Do you think it'll grow back all the way? Sorry for the long message.
@pattywirth2518
@pattywirth2518 9 жыл бұрын
+Natasha Bragg Sorry I missed this message. Yes if it is starting to grow back it will continue. They go thru three hair stages, dormant (no growth) , shedding and growth. IF a dog gets cut down during a dormant stage it could stay short coated for a year.

+Natasha Bragg That's sad. I get terrified too if one day im gonna have a pom. Because nowadays a lot of customers want those super smooth neat ball cut like a bichon/poodle which doesnt look good on pom and also they think everyone who owns pom, wants their pom to look like Jiff The Pom or Boo. sigh....

You said through gentle persuasion you ensure they do what they are told and you won't tolerate it if they don't sit still. How do you do this? He looks so well mannered! When they are young and kicking off, what do you do to train them?
@pattywirth2518
@pattywirth2518 8 жыл бұрын
First you have to have patience, but be firm. You are kind to the baby, but you don't stop because baby doesn't like something. If baby does not like you to hold his/her paw....hang on. ( if the baby get really wild, hold them to restrict movement don't let them get hurt, but hang on) Don't give in. You are not being mean, you are teaching baby that you will win the argument Baby will test you and if you are firm and don't give in, the baby will begin to trust and respect you and not fight even if it is something new. You stay calm , but firm

@pattywirth2518

I don't think the product makes too much difference. I use Orvis shampoo because it is very gentle and I use any cream rinse from COSTCO, doesn't matter much. For tangles I use THE stuff which is a silicone, I believe, it works great! Hand drying the dog and using good brushes and combs is more important that what shampoo , conditioner. Just use a mild shampoo and for greasy dogs get a tar and sulfur (cannot be used on cats) or something form you vet.

+MadHatterRukko Hi yes I do have tips. The shorter you trim around the anus the better, then look at the front of your dog and trim the chest. Be careful not too much, just trim some and look at it from the side. Also the more ruff your dog has, the higher the neck and head hair the shorter your dog will look. Even though my dog is short backed I still make him look shorter. Look at all the videos to see how I do it. He should get more ruff and mane later as he matures.

I have to measure it and get back to you. It was custom make on a barber chair base so it is hydraulic. IF you want a grooming table for cheap buy a worn out beauty shop or barber chair that still has a working base. Then have someone or yourself if you are handily build the top.

My pome Moon his very agressif when i want too brush him and it's impossible to me to give him a groom , i live in china and the professional groomer will fight him if he not quiet so i never take him there... i have read we can use a muzzle but i'm afraid it's make me more angry and give him so personality problems , can you give me your advice please?
@pattywirth2518
@pattywirth2518 8 жыл бұрын
+朝曦贾 I have groomed many dogs that needed a muzzle. First you must put Moon on a table and have a friend hold him if you do not have the same set up I do. Then you must muzzle him. He has trained you NOT TO GROOM HIM! You must retrain him. He does not like to be brushed , so make sure you are not hurting him and brush gently at first. He will accept it. He is only angry that he cannot get his way with you. When he learns you are not going to stop brushing he can accept it. Do not let him win. He needs to be brushed or his hair will be terrible and matted. You are doing him a favor. Don't give up, be strong. When you are done reward him. Keep the grooming time short. Please let me know if this works for you, okay?

hi, i used to have a silky terrier that will attack and bite when i try to brush him. will bark growl bite at me, my hand and my brush. all i did was to bring him on my lap, i put some of his fav treats on table and i let him stand on 2 front paws on table and eat the treats while i slowly brush him and praise him for being a good boy. that only took me 10 minutes and he was very fine with being brushed after that. you can try to ask someone else to help you with giving treats while you brush your pom.

+朝曦贾 The problem here is not about grooming. It is about your dog becoming your leader, not you becoming his leader. Your dog does not feel you are a good leader, and he has become the pack leader. Watch Cesar Milan videos to understand this idea of pack leadership. In a dog's world there is always a pack, and only one leader. Once the other dogs feel confident that the leader is mentally and physically dominant, and will protect them as a pack, they relax and become followers. Often, with small dogs we treat them as children. They are NOT children. You must be dominant with them. Does not mean you hurt them at all! Just dominate your dog with your presence and mean what you say. When you say something dog has to obey. No petting, fussing, repeating! Like martial arts, understand? Many women do not understand this leadership attitude. Learn that first. Next, when you tell your dog to do something, HE MUST DO IT. NO QUESTION OF DISOBEDIENCE! DO IT. OR ELSE. No fussing. No petting. No cajoling. Stern command, and make him do it. I have taken all kinds of dogs and retrained them, even very dominant alpha big dogs. Do not force them. Just remain consistent and firm, and do not give up. You are bigger than the dog. Make the dog listen to you. If it does not, it is your fault. So work on yourself first.
@pattywirth2518

Lass-in Angeles You are fabulous! Excellent advise. I am sure you are a very effective dog trainer that understands dogs are not babies, but fierce predators in a small package (toy dogs) Some are dominant and a spoiled, dominant dog is a very difficult dog to deal with. Thank you for the great answer.

you say you don't put up with a dog that doesn't just stand there and let you cut his hair if that is the case what do you do with a dog that doesn't stand there and wants to sit down? Do you hit the dog or yell at the dog what is it that you don't put up with and how do you deal with it?
@pattywirth2518
@pattywirth2518 8 жыл бұрын
First, I start grooming my dogs as puppies. I make each session short and give them lots of pets and love. They get used to being on the table, clippers, toe nail trimming, holding still. It isn't hard to train them, I handle my puppies a lot from birth, so they don't mind having their feet, mouths touched, bodies touched. You have to be even more patient with an untrained, adult dog, patient, but firm. If you ask them to stand and they sit, then you calmly bring them back to a stand position. If they sit down ten times, you ask them to stand up ten times. You have to be the boss. You don't yell or hit them. I am more stubborn than the dog. I keep asking them to behave. I have groomed lots of dogs that were kicked out of other grooming shops as being ungroomable. I worked with them, figured out if they were scared or just had too much attitude or were just crazy. I was able to groom them by staying calm. Rarely does a dog have any problem standing still on a table. They naturally don't want to slip off the table, so they don't move much anyway. If there is a problem, it will be with cutting nails, cleaning ears, shaving a face or perhaps holding a front foot.

Like handling the dog while holding both the scissors and the comb and right after she slides the scissors across the dogs face a few times like a comb. What if the dog would have a done a sudden inpredictle move at the same time?
