It was 2002 when I discovered this song and Groove Armada, my then girlfriend and I were into them. This moment in time was for me a new beginning in my life, a rebirth almost. This song reminds me of that feeling I had back then. She died of breast cancer at 56…Mandy you pulled me out of that hole I was in. Thank you.

Amazing comment. Nothing like crying in public, on a Monday morning, in the break room at work. And nothing like reading the comments of strangers to take you there. And(!!!) there's nothing like this song. This hook is a complete experience. You use your ears, heart and soul. I can't help feeling like it's up above and on into that plane of...just above music. It's obviously music, it's Groove Armada, but it's a tiny bit more, than just that.

I was always an insomniac and back in the 90s I'd stay up all night watching Open University. They used to play this music during the intermissions. I assumed it was a piece of stock music written for just that purpose. Then one day, I saw a die hard film. In the basement at the airport there was a gramaphone playing. Recognising it as the sample used in this track I rushed over to my mothers house and played it for her on the piano to find out what it was. She recognised it but all she could tell me was "It's about the seaside but I can't remember the lyrics" I then put all of these details on a DIY forum in the vague hope that someone would know what I'm talking about. Finally after more than a decade of searching, someone answered my prayers and told me that the record playing in Die Hard was "Old Cape Cod" by Patsi Paige and this was used as a sample on the track "At the River" by Groove Armada.

My husband and I fell in love with this song when it was the track on an M&S advert. Whenever it played on the TV we would just stop whatever we were doing and just listen to it. I hunted for it in secret and eventually found it. I played it for him as a surprise on Christmas morning and am in tears writing this as he passed away nearly eight years ago. This track just popped up on KZbin after something else I was watching. Once again I just stopped and listened to it. It's nice to know that so many other people have been touched by it as we were ❤

22 years ago, my father went on a business trip to California and drove along the coast from San Diego to San Francisco. Before completing the journey though, he stopped by Monterey and entered a music shop where this song was playing. Every time he told me this story, he always emphasized how it felt like he was “levitating” while walking through the store’s shelves. I was born a few years later and the same Vertigo copy he bought that day still makes up an essential part of my life. I hope to be able to travel to California someday and do the exact same thing...

"In 1998, a sample of Patti Page's recording of "Old Cape Cod" formed the basis of Groove Armada's 1998 UK hit "At the River". The lines "If you're fond of sand dunes and salty air, / Quaint little villages here and there..." sung in Page's multi-tracked close-harmony, are repeated over and over, with the addition of synthesizer bass, slowed-down drums and a bluesy trombone solo to produce a chill-out track. "
@MGrayl-ib5fo10 ай бұрын
And they called it "At the river" & not "At the beach" *facepalm*
@@MGrayl-ib5foThe song title comes from an old Christian hymn called “Shall We Gather At the River?” which inspired the trombone melody played throughout the song. I see what you mean though! To be fair to them… if you’re by an estuary then technically you can be on a beach and by a river simultaneously 😉

In 2012 I went on an impromptu roadtrip with friends from LA to Portland, stopping in SF along the way. It was three of us piled into my 98 Acura Integra but that didn't seem to matter. At some point this song became the unofficial theme of the trip, and we listened to it probably a dozen times as we made our way up the coast. One of my favorite memories.

This is a special song so well produced the video is futuristic and fun in a way that you can feel a sense of inner longing for peace tranquility that we all have. The moog synth is f-ing amazing. What a treasure for me to find I’m addicted it’s like a drug can’t stop replaying it.

This song means so much to So many people. Across generations.personally, it was on the high school bus for me one day a week.. I was in primary, but had to make the trip . It was a scenic journey. And stayed with me 30 years later

this one would compete... Asura - Le Dernier Voyage ( for awakening of the 3rd eye....) also,.. meditated to Phaeleh - Lament (TIMELESS TRACK (!) that takes you out of your normal day rhythm) you might like CHVRN - Awakening (but this is more electronic)

Anybody remember the Chilled Spirit compilation CD back in 2001? I remember seeing those ads on TV back in the day, hearing the little snippit of this song, & thinking: I've GOT to get that album! Glad I did. Had some other great songs by Moby, The Orb, Robert Miles...great album.

Kinda blows the mind that they could sample some verses of the retro song _Old Cape Cod_ by Patti Page (a 1950s chart-topping singer from Oklahoma) and end up with such a beloved result. You never know. Best part for me: the deep, fat, juicy, funk-infused synth notes that jump in now and again.
