We recently visited the studio of multi-talented producer, sound designer and musician Matia Simovich to learn more about his use of the Groove Synthesis 3rd Wave 61-Key Advanced Wavetable Synthesizer.
The Groove Synthesis 3rd Wave 61-Key Advanced Wavetable Synthesizer is a hybrid synth which combines the classic digital wavetable synths of the past with an analog filter and modern technology. Inspired by the PPG Wave, the 3rd Wave incorporates the classic lo-fi 8-bit waveforms of the '80s, popularized by bands such as Tangerine Dream and Depeche Mode, with a new high-resolution complex wavetable and analog-modeled waveforms.
Key features of the 3rd Wave include 24-voice polyphony (3 DCOs per voice), a Dave Rossum-designed 24dB/oct 2140 lowpass resonant filter that offers variable saturation and customizable resonance compensation, an SEM-inspired state-variable filter and four ADSR+ delay envelopes, which include two custom envelopes that can toggle between exponential and vintage-style responses.

As an owner of this amazing synth, I think that Matia did a great job of concisely illustrating the starting points of this synth. The thing is, yes it is 4 part multitimbral, but the quality of sound you can get out of just one oscillator, and one or two parts is excellent. It is very easy to get around. The filter section is more flexible than a lot of offerings, although I am still trying to get my head around the SVF side a little bit. I love this board, and purchased it for studio use primarily. It slightly beat out an OBX8, and primarily for the versatility. I was never big on the wavetable sound, but now it is growing on me, and this is, as stated, a much better and fresh take on it with the high definition waveforms, the smoothing, etc. Plus, it has 4 independent audio outputs! There is a desktop version too. And... the development team is very responsive. The new firmware update of 1.6 improves the free-running-oscillators, etc.

Nice demo, and nice teaching style. You got pretty in depth but were able to keep the description of what’s going on relatively simple. I hope if Groove Synthesis is considering a tutorial video series that you have time available to really open this thing up for future users.

I thought the digital filter feeds the analog filter?? The front panel does imply the opposite. In the meantime, nice to see you back, Matia! I have had my 3W for a year now, absolutely love it and still feel like I am just scratching the surface...!

The two filters operate is series - the State-Variable Filter first, followed by the Low-Pass Filter.

I think he just misspoke. The manual says the digital filter is first, and it wouldn’t make sense (sonically or financially) to add another stage of DA/AD conversion to route each voice from digital oscillators-> analog filter -> digital filter. But now I’m wondering exactly how the mixer works for the digital filter…

It’s serial but if you open cutoff of the digital filter all the way you’re bypassing it as long as it’s in low pass mode.

Excellent demo of an outstanding synth. I would be interested in a comparison between the keyboard and the desktop unit though, as I‘ve run out of real estate and could save €1,700. The sound is the same, but what about usability? The desktop module has significantly fewer knobs and buttons. How would this affect sound design?

Thanks Matia. It's a great synth, no doubt. I think tho, I can make it with Waldorf M. I would like to hear your opinion on the M. It would be great to hear your sound demo of it or even better get a preset bank. I can almost guarantee it would sell well..

They sound different and both are great. Completely different concepts tho. One is a table top 8 voice. The other a monster 24 voice keyboard with an actually usable multitimbral mode (im looking at you waldorf and the bizarre voice allocation scheme on the m).

@@kenzoblytheproducertv4934 Quantum has multiple synth engines - a sound designers playground. It’s super deep and requires interacting mostly with a touch screen. Great for experimental, soundtracks and other styles. The Quantum is more of a blank slate while the 3rd wave has a bit more of a flavor to it, due to the Prophet style filters and wavetable engine. For virtual analog sounds the 3rd wave sounds better in my opinion. The 3rd Wave has more grit and is retro leaning while the Quantum is futuristic and modern sounding. Quantum is more of an all encompassing self contained sound design tool while the 3rd Wave feels more like an instrument with a vibe.

@@googlingthevoid I thank you have the best explanation between the 2 my man!!!I have the the 1st Quantum and was on the fence about getting the MK2 or the desktop version of the 3rd Wave.I love the Quantum like you said its a sound designer’s playground and just seeing different videos on the 3rd Wave i can tell it means business,i thank i might get both and sample the 3rd Wave into the Quantum and see what i can create like that my man… Thanks for the professional explanation of the 2 bro…🫡🫡🫡

When is the last time anyones walked into Guitar Center and actually seen a synthesizer? Nothing but workstations at every location except the Hollywood location which has like 5 to look at cause there not even plugged in. I know its called “Guitar center” but You really need to focus on quality cause competition is fierce these days.

So true. Every Guitar Center keyboard area i go into only has a few workstations and a ton of Casio-like keyboards. Nothing is plugged in and everything feels like I'd get Ebola if I touched anything.

you can go into a guitar center which was just built and opened like week and it's already junky, dirty and disorganized. a Mexican flea market is cleaner and better organized.
