If you want an affordable, comfortable, modern safety features, large visibility, spacious, daily and long road trip car, then the forester should be on your list. It's power is more than adequate. If you want a performance car, paying premium gas, and high maintenance then stop complaining about the forester's power and buy yourself a luxury suv with a turbocharged engine and crappy mpg.

Just purchased a 19 Forester base model replacing our 09 Forester base model. I noted vast improvements in comfort, ride quality, wind noise me standard safety features including back up camera, intelligent cruise, blind spot monitoring . As for the engine performance it feels much quicker than the 09 and accelerates well enough and climbs hills easily. Contrary to what everyone seems to be saying the CVT trans makes the vehicle seem livelier. My only complaint is lack of paddle shifters. As a licensed auto damage appraiser I can tell you that the Subaru's are well built and hold up in collisions quite well. For me an all wheel drive vehicle that is well built and relatively inexpensive to purchase , has many standard safety features and gets decent fuel mileage is a no brainier. I purchased for my wife due to above .

After I have driven my 2019 Forester 16,000 miles I find that I am very pleased with its comfort and with the safety features. My car is a Limited with options added that bring it up to the Touring (other than features built in to that higher trim level). Having said these good things I find that I am tormented by apparent software problems. My infotainment system went silent 4000 miles into a 8500 mile trip, my rear gate has opened at surprising times, while other times it won't open. Gate functioning returns after I disengage the negative pole of my battery, so a wrench and a willingness to pop the hood is a regular requirement.

I absolutely agree with the "off road" trims from Subaru. There should be a whole division, or simply STI Off-Road, that does that. These changes are relatively easy to do on a factory level. Many clients would save some cash and Subaru would be able to make some cool commercials as well. :)

In Canada EyeSight is not standard (and I'm glad that it isn't -- I've driven too many rental cars that yell at you for perceived dangers that are not actually there. If you need sensors to tell you to stay in your own lane, then you shouldn't be driving to begin with); and fog lights are standard on all but the very base model

More opportunities: * Make better rubber floor mats (Weathertech FloorLiner-esque) since it's a Subaru and it's obvious. * Bigger sidewalls for the rubber cargo tray. * Matte screen for the touchscreen because of glare. * Gradient tint for the windscreen because it's huge and the visors aren't big enough. * Eyesight recognition and timer for red lights (because jamming on the breaks sucks). * Ventilated seats. * Heated rear seats. * Dark navy colour like the other Subaru models have. * Tailgate recognition for obscatcles surrounding the opening area (Or at least an accessory for damage on the lip of the tailgate). * Nicer rear head rests. * Maybe an arm rest? Or a sliding lid center console? * Integrated settings menu in one screen (since they're all scattered through out the screens). * Heads up display (since the coloured lights on the front dash board is kind of cheap). * Less piano black trim on touch points of the car. * 360 degree camera since every car has that. * Some time out for the facial recognition system to start (Or a button to make it re-scan your face). * Auto up and down windows for all windows. And some other things...

2019 looks great and internally a big improvement compared to my 2016. The reason they need that XT back is not only about speed but towing. I tow a trailer loaded with about 1600pounds ever so often. Pop the engine into sport mode and she pulls that trailer effortless.

We have a touring model and despise it. Keep in mind we are a Subaru family, been driving them for decades. This 2019 Touring model is an anxiety generating vehicle we hate driving or being in, at all. Literally, the best experience we have is when it's just sitting in the driveway. The facial recognition is an absolute nightmare that does NOT work about 75% of the time in our experience. The bane of its existence is sunlight. If there is sunlight coming through the windshield it turns itself off. Even when it is "on" it doesn't work properly, and god forbid you have sunglasses on or the alerts just won't stop... The "assist" software seems to have been designed around a crack head driving instructor. We live in a tight urban area and this thing is a rolling ALARM system from the time we get in to it until the time we get out of it. Literally, the vehicle "alarms" between 7 and 15 times per trip anywhere we go and regardless of who is driving. Please keep in mind, we are SAFE drivers nobody has any speeding tickets or wrecks. We know how to drive. The rear sensors are a complete disaster. Backing out of angled, steeper, driveways frequently triggers the rear sensors to SMASH on its brakes because I guess it think its running in to a wall or something. Most of the time when I egress from even a slightly elevated driveway I have angle out at a sharp angle to prevent the RAB system from giving everybody in the vehicle a heart attack. Why? well because the emergency braking system sounds like the front gun of an A-10 Warthog (The Air Force's tank buster). Yes I mean that literally. Also; we have a sprig of lemon grass that sometimes grows across the driveway threshold and this thing thinks its the neighbors 9 year old lying in the driveway, again ALARMS AND BELLS ALL OVER. Honestly, how can someone even remotely consider driving the piece of crap "off road" at all! The Auto Stop/Start feature is a modern design tragedy as well. Basically, you NEVER know when this thing is going to shut itself off or on or whatever. You really just have to step on the gas and pray that it does what you want. The rear gate also enjoys giving us attitude whenever it wants. Sometimes, and for no good reason the rear hatch just won't open. Instead it will beep at you twice, and ignore your commands. Which is great when you are in the grocery store parking lot with kids and handful of groceries. The only way to fix it, is to take it back to the dealership where they have to climb through the car and manually release the hatch, THEN power the entire car down by disconnecting the battery, and then it will work. Hate to keep you all day, but I am on a mission to get the word out about how this car REALLY behaves in real life, not on open empty roads. This car has software demons that Subaru must address sooner than later. At this point, we intend to move to a different car company for the first time in our lives by the end of the year if Subaru cannot come up with a more amicable driving experience. If you are planning on purchasing this vehicle we recommend keeping it overnight and really testing it out for yourself. Had we done that we most likely would have stayed in our 2015 Forester, which we loved... We just had no inclination that Subaru had gone this over the top with all these so called safety features. We think the car is actually dangerous and do NOT recommend it to anyone.

We drive a 2018 Forester XT and we have nearly been rear-ended multiple times when the stupid car decides that the car 30 yards ahead that has already cleared the road and turned off onto the adjoining side road is somehow an imminent danger and the computer slams on the brakes for no apparent justification. Drivers behind us just are not seeing anything in front of us to anticipate such an extreme action so they are probably thinking that we are brake checking them. I feel like we have to buy a dash board camera just to prove to the police that we aren't brake checking people illegaly. I would never drive a non-turbo version and we live in flat terrain city. It's just very hair raising to try and merge onto the interstate driving the non-turbo 4 cylinder subaru engine vehicles. I would at least buy a 6 cylinder subaru. And oh by the way, when the car was new, we had it repaired under warranty five times at the dealer and ended up driving a loaner vehicle for several months worth of time, just because some bone head at the subaru engine factory forgot to drill a hole in the intake manifold where one of the evap system hoses connects to it for vacuum supply. This item wasn't in their diagnostic troubleshooting tree so it took them forever to find it and they reported the defect to Subaru and we never even got so much as an apology from the regional subaru person. Seriously doubt we will ever buy another Subaru after this experience. They are turning into a POS 4 banger.

I also got the 2018 premium model Forester. Some of these pros and cons don't matter to me, but you're right about the safety features. Go ahead and make them all standard; it's why I bought my car, and why Consumer Reports named the Forester as the best SUV for senior drivers (me). I love my Forester, but there is one thing I don't love: the placement of the center cupholder(s). I am a short female driver, about 5'2", and I have to move the driver's seat way forward, which means I have to also slide the center armrest way forward, which means the cupholder is very, very awkward to get to. I'd be willing to believe that many Forester drivers are female and possibly also short in stature - this has got to bug other short drivers! And speaking of the center armrest - as a short driver, with the seat scooted forward AND up vertically, my elbow doesn't reach the armrest without leaning way over to the right! I had to buy an armrest cushion with elastic straps on Amazon in order to have a comfortable place to rest my right arm. Subaru can certainly do better designing for short drivers. Otherwise everything is great - I love, love, love the transmission and the safety features.

Great review. So far this vehicle is on the top of my list to replace my current vehicle. But, from what I gathered so far, it could improve on the following areas. Add a turbo version. This will help those that tow or feel that it needs more passing power. Bring the Hybrid version to the states and Canada. The vehicle was built on the SGP with hybrid capable room. Add a wireless phone charging capability and especially have a place to place larger phones. Current cubby is too small. Add retractable cup holder tabs to accommodate different types of cups to prevent tossing. Add front ventilated seats. Add 360 degree camera view (great for parking). Add modular accents that customers can buy as options to replace the chrome accents. and/or the option of bringing a luxury sport version look as a top level trim. (Sport look with leather and touring features). Gas Struts for the hood. Whether these are introduced in the upcoming years, is anyone's guess. Regardless, I feel the Forester is the better vehicle from those within the same vehicle segment.

Sadly, Just asked Subaru if they would offer their 2.4 turbo as an option on the upcoming 2020 Forester, the answer back was no. I seriously doubt they will change much if anything in 2020 as their 2019 sales are trending above their 2018 sales figures. I totally agree with your list and if they added those features, we would seriously be buyers, since Toyota shrank their 2109 Rav4 and killed 1.5 inches of front legroom.

David Vega Just bought the Forester with second from the top finishes - no leather but everything else. I am totally delighted. I traded in a 2017 Forester - same trim level. My 2017 model didn’t have Eyesight. Our 2017 Legacy did and so I was familiar with the technology. The improvements on the older model are astonishing. It’s a bit quicker, handles better, seats are more comfortable and it is quieter on the road, especially highway driving. I am very happy with my new Forester. Just one note. I drive for economy on gas. I live in a exurban area in the Northeast where getting around takes 20 mins of local roads to go anywhere. Cruise control is my best friend. Apple play entertains me as I use my iPhone apps on the road. If you want a sporty drive, a SUV with lower gas mileage and more snap on acceleration or road hugging when powering into bends in the road, you won’t be happy with this economy / comfort oriented design and engineering. This model fits me perfectly. Trips to Home Depot or for groceries or a drive in the county are a pleasure to behold while I save at the pump and go easier on my personal carbon footprint.

Boxer engines already have a tendency to blow head gaskets at about 125 to 150,000 mile mark . Putting a turbo in those will just make that happen all that much sooner. I think it was a wise decision for Subaru to nix the turbo option for that reason. I'm saying that as somebody who owns an Outback who had to replace the head gasket at about 150,000 miles. Plus, the 2.5 four cylinder is just fine.

Thanks for the video. I own a 2019 Premium with Option Package 15. It's a great ride, replacing my 2011 Outback 2.5 Limited. But, like you said, I missed out on these things that I think I wanted (and will get them next time!): First, the Konoji style boomerang DRL's. My Premium has LED low beams, and it uses the same bulbs for their DRL's, whereas the Limited and higher has the boomerang style C-lights, which have a distinct brand personality. Next, I'd like to see fog lights default like you mentioned. I do miss them on bad weather/foggy days. Next, I'd like more illumination in the cargo area. I know the Sport has the LED flood light back there, but I would like to at least have an option in other trims. It looks like they have a small indentation in the front grille - this would be a perfect spot to add a front view camera like on the Ascent Touring. And finally, I would love to see side-mirror turn signals. Again, I'd have to go Limited for this feature, but I can't even option it on my Premium. My lease is done in about 30 months - I'm hoping for a PHEV variant of the Forester going forward since I'm a city driver, but at the very least I think I'll have to consider the Limited my next time around. I love the car, it is really fun to drive!

The ability to add the 2.4 L turbo engine that comes on the Ascent to a Sport model Forester would be awesome! Here in Vermont, I find the 2.5 L normally aspirated engine to be plenty peppy for both climbing and even passing on steep mountain roads as well as for merging onto the Interstate. However, a 2.4 L turbo would be that much better. I moved away from the Forester to a WRX about 10 years ago because my 2005 Forester lacked get-up-and-go and had way too much wind noise. The 2019 Forester (mine is a Sport) solves both of those issues and gives me a very pleasant, smooth ride even over frost heaves. I’m really pleased with what Subaru has done to improve the Forester.

Yep,a Melbournite here and I purchased a brand new top spec XV iS in the khaki blue(always gets a comment) and had it for a year now with the "4 seasons in one day" weather here its zero issues after 25000 km and excellent economy. Best thing is after a fair time "in the saddle driving about" you certainly feel less taxed physically with the ergonomics and handling of the car, as all modern vehicles should. I don't miss that characteristic fighting the steering wheel wrench from a "gun it" start typical of the front wheel drive cars one iota-none of that with the XV. Subaru did the right thing not putting a turbo on . Turbo would just be another thing to go wrong with dubious benefits in the whole scheme of things. If buyers think its justified there's plenty of aftermarket workshops willing to fit one, so don't say I wish it had a turbo because you don't need to wish, aftermarkets there.Go knock yourself out. Subaru's "Next Gen" should have an all round camera with USB recording inside and out-that should be number one on the standard options and I suspect the X Mode hill climb ascent function is in the works which will be super helpful. 4WD club patrons on the weekend aways are always astounded on the ability of this vehicle with a lot of women gravitating to the vehicle as they can see the benefits of a bit of all-around city/country knockabout with refinement, instead of size and brute force. That's my 2 zacs- for what its worth.

I have 2 more things Subaru should've made available: 1) rain-sensitive wipers (heck, our 2006 Mercedes E350 had them; why aren't they standard on the Touring edition Forester and Outback?) and 2) why are the exterior mirrors, even on the Touring Edition, manually-folding, when so many other top-line vehicles let you fold them electrically? On top of that, when you fold them back out, the mirrors are no longer in adjustment so you have to reset them, too. Not what I expected for Subaru's most luxurious models.

Would turbo be the difference? I wish they would take the useless graphics of the little man walking to the gas tank. I absolutely LOVE the visibility of this vehicle & that the windows aren't tinted so dark! I would like to see the flip down rear seat buttons in the cargo area available in the Limited and Sport trims, not just on the Touring. I am currently comparing the 2019 Honda CR-V AWD vs the 2019 Subaru Forester. The Honda has the rear seat down cargo handles in the EX-L trim which is thousands of dollars less than the Forester Touring trim I would need to get the same rear seat buttons. It's a feature I really need as I have to put the rear seats down every day to carry boxes. I think it's an omission Subaru should remedy to compete with the Honda in that middle EX-L/Limited trim level around $31,000 MSRP. Besides this, on paper, the Honda turbo is at least a second quicker 0-60, but the Forester has better visibility, wider opening for cargo, better AWD system and a tuning knob. I haven't driven either yet. If Subaru adds the 250 hp turbo model that they have in the Ascent and the new 2020 Outback, they will have a winner in the compact SUV segment.

Bought a 2016 Subaru Forester based on its safety and crash worthiness. From that point on I think we should have traded up with a newer Toyota Highlander which we sold our 2005 Highlander to my grand daughter with 220,000 miles and still going well after 2 years. I don't find the Subaru driver or passenger friendly. My spouse had 2 hip implants. She likes a seat cushion for comfort, but with our Subaru the passenger air bag stays off if she uses a cushion because it is pressure sensitive whereas in the Toyota there was a manual switch to turn on or off the air bag if it was empty. Now it is computer controlled based on weight on seat which a cushion blocks so unless she opts out of an airbag a cushion is persona non grata. After that is the unviewable dash board on bright sunny days and then many other pet peeves. It will be our last Subaru.

Subaru, while we're at suggestions... Give the Legacy the Outback suspension. There used to be an Outback Sedan that had the ride height, and it would be great to see that come back. People love the ride height advantage. The 19 Forester does have options to upgrade the engine guard, and you should still be able to get Fogs as an easy accessory. I don't see why you couldn't, unless they stopped wiring them all the same. I know the whole factory emphasis, but if someone knows they want them prior to purchase they should be able to let someone know they want them added. Sure it bumps their delivery by a day or two, but allows them to build it into their payments.

I don't know which market you are in, but here in USA sedans are the "redheaded stepchild" at auto companies. I expect to see sedans give way to hatchbacks or wagons in nearly every size/price bracket within 5 years...no matter who is building them. As a consequence, I would doubt any manufacturer will give more than lip-service to the dying sedan market. I am just hoping folks will finally get sick and tired of SUV/crossovers and sedans will eventually make a comeback....but I am not holding my breath.
@717dash_cam

@@howardkerr8174 Mid-Atlantic state here. I know they really aren't popular anymore, but my theory towards it is that it's mainly due to ride-height and the desire for AWD. At this point the Mid-size sedan is an appliance, just as much as an SUV is. People abandoned the sedan to have a more commanding view of the road, and to feel safer, which I can see since sitting lower to the ground around a bunch of SUV's, they're gonna override crash structure. Sedans lost the single vehicle family game long ago and I see no comeback for that in the future. They still hold a place in the multi-vehicle family market where people want a truck or SUV for a family hauler, but have no need for a second; That is unless they want/need AWD. Subaru headed the affordable AWD sedan market, and I think if they could give it ride-height to match what most SUV's have, it could stand a chance to gain some ground and stand out more if they make it stand out in economy and style to Camry and Accord. US manufacturers have sucked at sedans since the SUV craze started, where the Japanese and Koreans have excelled through it by keeping them affordable while giving people what they want. Quality (or increasing quality for Hyundai and Kia), Economy, Technology, Reliability and Affordability. Ford, GM, and FCA didn't do those in combination well(or well at all); You always had to pick which mattered most to you. Finally, brand image has been a huge thing. The second car tends to be the car these multi-car families hold on to, upgrading the family hauler more often, so people gravitate towards the brands seen as most reliable for the second car. Personally, I know people who only like sedans. They have no desire to go to a sports car, luxury brand, or Truck/SUV, because they mostly don't give sensibility sedans do. I hope the craze slows myself, but I do enjoy the ride height of my 19 Forester; If they lifted the Legacy, or made the Legacy a mid-size sport sedan and brought back an Outback Sedan I think it may be a Subie sedan game changer.

agree about having a teeny bit more towing cap. We have a side-by-side on a small trailer that comes in around 1300# and it's borderline and clearly feels like my car is straining to pull it. I wouldn't dare try anything heavier. all the other things on your list are fluff afaic. I'd much rather see: sun visors that aren't a square cutout piece of crap that folds right down into my line of sight. Whoever designed those things needs to go back to school because they are almost non-functional. stereo knobs are junk. They give you a knob that's made of brushed aluminum that might as well be covered in chicken grease it's' so slippery and the detents are spaced 1 billionth of a mm apart so it's impossible to find a new station without kipping three notches fwd or back. That is if you don't accidentally brush your finger on the touchscreen and end up jumping away from the sirius radio over to some obscure menu setting instead. Touchscreen is very poorly laid out and much too sensitive. why can the passenger not have a power seat? not even the topmost option gives wife a power seat...really? Heads up display. Many competitors have very slick HUD displays that let you keep your eyes on the road. Many of them like Honda are even full color dynamic displays that show all kinds of useful info. Parking Assist? and finally the eyesight smart cruise control is awesome if you even find yourself in stop and go traffic, but for some reason it won't hold you at a full stop for more than 2 seconds and drops out. Mazda and Honda both let the vehicle you are following come to a full stop and wait patiently for them to go again.

Great review but did they fix the oil consumption problem?

What has been done to the seats? 2015 Foresters are so so but other SUV autos are thicker and more comfortable.

Is having turbo so important?, not to me but it seems you keep mentioning it in most of your videos.not many SUVs have that feature nowadays.

Is there any truth to the idea of having more engine options on the 2024 Forester (turbo, flat six, etc.)? Reviewers all say that the 2.5L flat four is underpowered, especially off-road.

New engine = new problems. I wonder how much oil these engines will consume? Please bring back the manual transmission. Thnx!

As others have indicated in these comments and from what I have seen and heard from a number of mechanics, a CVT transmission should be a red flag. It is said only Toyota and Honda does CVT transmissions right. You can have all these wonderful bells and whistles in your Subaru, but if its transmission isn't built to go the distance, that should give buyers serious reservations.

G Carmona I thought that only Subi does the CVT properly. Only Subaru.

I am getting my forester this December. I live in upstate NY and we get tons of snow. Do you recommend snow tires or will the all seasons be better.

The standard tires from the factory aren't the best. I put Goodyear assurance weatherreadys on my outback. They are all seasons and seem pretty good.

Do the leather seats hold up or will they tear within a year and a half?

I had a 2017 Forester and had to trade it in because the pedal position was so uncomfortable. The brake pedal was too far left, and was hard to keep pressed when sitting stopped in traffic. It was not possible to 'heel toe' the pedals in this car because of the distance between the brake and gas pedals. Also the pedals themselves were too high off the floor to operate comfortably. After about 10 minutes of driving in city traffic with lots of stops - my leg would start to hurt. Can anyone confirm whether this has changed in the 2019 Forester?

Nobody should buy a Subaru UNTIL they allow the auto start/stop switch to be permanently OFF. This is super annoying.

Okay, but do they still blow head gaskets and did they solve the problems with the heavy oil consumption in the new timing chain engine design? That is why a lot of people lease Foresters now instead of buying them.

This engine is going in the 2020 Outback with more added weight so it should be a real slug in the mountains. It's only saving grace is the 2.4 turbo. Then you have the big touch screen which is another story.
