The "national express" is like your greyhound buses he's just singing about the different sights you'll get on the cross-country bus. :)

In the UK their long distance Bus service is called the National Express, they are singing about that in a joking manner. The mental hospital is just a setting for the music video so you dont have to see footage of buses.

Divine Comedy formed in Northern Ireland where the local mental health care system is sometimes known colloquially as the National Express (hence the video theme), and as others have said, National Express is also a long distance coach company in the UK. Neil Hannon (the front man) wrote this song about his observations whilst travelling on it.

The Group, The Devine Comedy have written some classics Intro music to "Father Ted" "My lovely horse" but still my Favourite is "The Pop singers fear of the pollen count" It just puts me in a good mood. That video was Fantastic. I only heard the lyrics before, which was good enough, great in fact if you travelled National express in those times. Thanks for posting it.

So much English humour in that video. I think they’re from Northern Ireland. National express is the brand name of a bus company in the uk a bit like greyhound is in the states

A great song by The Divine Comedy, (in my humble oppinion) is "A lady of a certain age". You should react to it.

I think I like the song less for seeing the video, it's obvious they were tying it to the National Health Service, there's strong elements of the British "Carry On" movies (very popular comedy from the 1950s and 60s, aired on TV long into the 90s and possibly even now, almost entirely about filthy old men trying to look at boobs in various uniforms) - it looks like it's satirising something but not really saying anything, which I find more annoying than I used to. But then 20 years ago nobody thought we'd choose to give up the NHS so maybe I'm just annoyed thinking about that, lol.

Yeah I don't like the video either. I'm pretty sure it's parodying One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest, and I just feel a bit squeemish about it.

Just found you guys, I'm pleased you like it. If it helps, the national express was an express bus service. The first of its kind in the day, that offered cheap country wide bus travel. Another good devine comedy track is Something For The Weekend kzbin.info/www/bejne/kHfNl5SVh6dphsU Would love to see what you think of this too kzbin.info/www/bejne/mYvUf2Sdod9ngLs The Band Played Waltzing Matilda by The Pogues. Its a beautiful song but so tragically sad too.
