Just picking up some odds and ends at Shaw's in Groton, Massachusetts.
This is a demo of me using the Self-Checkout Lane.
When a British food chain bought Star Market, and Stop & Shop, they kept the names of those chains, but changed Iandolli's to Shaw's, probably because it failed.

This is probably the only NCR self checkout I have seen that reminds you to take your receipt! :)

@alexweb8 Glad you enjoyed. I'll try to remember and video other machines, when I come across them.

I use self-checkout for the intelligent conversation and to have something nice to look at.

My local Sam's Club just put in a Self Checkout. You first have to swipe your Sam's Club Membership Card through the card reader, then scan the items using a scanner, and pay there.

They have these in the shaws I went to. The store it self was looking desperate and there were long lines.

Wow that interface looks a lot like the one at Acme when they used to have them where I live, now Acme's out of business around my area.

This is great... If you find a store that has Fujitsu/Optimal Robotics, I would love to see them. I actually happened to be in a Shaws last time I was in Maine and it too had NCR self scanners running on their IBM point of sale, though Optimal/Fujitsu has always been my favorite.

I don't have one, since I'm not willing to give up personal information, to save a few pennies on some items. This place is a quick-stop for me, I don't do my full-blown shopping there.

@CaptainElevator42189 23 years of the buzz is long enough. The classic buzz didn't last very long. Glad the elevator at Leominster City Hall still has it.

The NCR ones were always easy to use, and everything was where it needed to be. Unfortunately these units are being replaced by the IBM ones, which are a headache to use.

They typically put a 20 item limit on these.

@fanowner12 I know. I go so fast, it can't keep up. :) I don't know how many times it failed to register a press, because I went too fast. Still, I like these a lott\ better than the IBM ones, far more straightfoward.

@CaptainElevator42189 Makes me wonder which came first, Impulse, or Otis Series-1. Earliest one of those I found was 1982.

@CaptainElevator42189 I found quite a few Vectors that were ADA Compliant. Granted, it was more the exception than the rule. Those are in abundant supply over here. I got to look up when these all debuted (sp?).

@dontwalkhand Hmm. Never paid attention then. Home Depot used to have them, and recently brought back self checkout stations. They probably were the former system, since they always screwed up.

@metalbeak14 The Home Depot here in Leominster (MA) was always like that. They ripped the systems out. Now, they have them again. I don't remember what brand the old ones were, but they always ended with a breakdown/failure.

Do you not understand the purpose of these? They are not here to replace employees. They are to be used if you only have a couple of items and you don't want to queue at the checkout. They are supposed to be express lanes. In the UK, when you are in the supermarket and its busy, the last thing you want to do is queue for 20 minutes just to buy 2 items. These self checkout lanes are brilliant

That's not the purpose of them where I live, in Brooklyn NY. All the CVS stores have between 5 and 10 of these in each. Most of the time they have the regular registers closed so customers are forced to use the self checkout. They have one employer dedicated to helping the customers use the machines. They have already significantly reduced their employee count. For CVS these have only one purpose. Eliminating jobs.

These aren't getting popular enough to worry about it. If the Lefties think about it, nearly half the registers, are typically not open, maybe most are open, so the 2 lanes don't matter, especially in slower stores like this.

These will never replace humans, as they are to vulnerable to failing. Any slight deviation from perfection, they stop working. Until they allow for some error (to retry things), humans are going nowhere soon.
