Groudon Is Absolutely Cracked! [Pokémon Emerald Elite Redux] (v1.6)

The weather trio is one of the most iconic and powerful in all of Pokémon. Throughout their existence they have been key parts in the VGC scene especially with their new forms. Even helped Wolfeyvgc win his world championship tournament. But what happens when they get 4 abilities and new movepools. Today well look at primal and regular Groudon to see how he stacks up against other the others of the weather trio and other mega Pokémon.

4:28 Solar Power boosts Groudon's direct Special Attack stat, not its base Sp. Atk. So with no investment, with 31 IVs, Groudon gets 236 • 1.5 = 354 Sp. Atk vs Primal's 336 Sp. Atk. And at max EVs, Groudon gets 299 • 1.5 = 448 Sp. Atk vs Primal's 399 Sp. Atk. So the difference is actually a lot more than if it just had 150 base Sp. Atk. Still, I don't think Primal Groudon is directly worse than regular Groudon in the ROM. A key factor vs the normal game is that Groudon has access to Shore Up (should be Slack Off, imo, but I guess Shore Up is a direct upgrade gameplay-wise - for reference, Shore Up's Japanese name is "Sand Gather," so I just imagine Groudon randomly builds a sand castle in the middle of battle because what the hell is sand gonna do for it?). If it didn't have reliable recovery, Primal Groudon would irrefutably be kind of cheeks compared to regular, having the Zamazenta-Crowned issue of no recovery options at all (outside of Rest). But having Shore Up means you could run it as a setup sweeper that never dies and continues stacking boosts, or a defensive behemoth that takes no SE damage with 100 HP and 160 Defense. Plus not being able to be burned is a nice addition. While not being Groudon, but better like how Primal Kyogre and Mega Rayquaza are pretty much straight upgrades (though base Kyogre does have Sea Guardian and access to Specs/Scarf for more immediate power), it does at least let Primal Groudon fulfill a completely different niche from its base and fulfill it quite well. Compared to the other Primals, though, I agree it's really lacking. Molten Down, while a perfect fit thematically, is kind of a dead ability. It already has Ground to deal with Rocks, and if it flies? Just use Jagged Fangs. Fossilized or no, Aerodactyl and Archeops aren't surviving even a neutral Tough Claws boosted Jagged Fangs off of base 180 Attack. The one good use case I can think of is Arceus Rock, and... that's Arceus Rock. Is anyone really using that over regular Arceus, Arceus Fairy, Arceus-Electric, or Arceus Water? They should have let it keep Self-Sufficient over Molten Down, to really hone in on its specific niche of being not easily killable at all. Primal Don would be the absolute tank, Primal Ogre would have permanent Swift Swim, and Mega Ray would be Mega Ray.

And the story is completely different in PvP: Mega ray is ag still, that part is still true (and er its essentially a fusion between ekiller and dragonite with sd+Aerilate espeeds) But the script is flipped with the fish and the ogre: ogre is rarely seen, some of it due to peon’s prevalence due to the fact that v create is essentially an automatic delete button on everything. Even the downsides don’t hamper it much from spamming the move: the defense boost won’t matter until it drops them multiple times, and it doing that ensures that it already has taken one ko, likely 2, and the speed drop can not only be negated by rock polish, but can even be spun to its advantage by investing in a specific speed tier that outruns its best check after a v create drop under twist dimensions: giratina origin, and either nuke it or deck it for nearly all of its health, allowing a teammate to go crazy with it gone, for instance, mega blastoise. It’s so absurd that there even is some speculation to restrict this monster from using v create

I'm probably more than a bit late, but I'd argue Groudon is still stronger than Kyogre and Rayquaza, *because Groudon's Sun and Tough Claws-boosted V-Create is the single strongest attack in the entirety of Elite Redux. Nothing else in the game even comes remotely close to the raw destructive power it possesses.* The added defensive utility of PDon also REALLY helps when all Groudon really wants is to click V-Create whenever possible; Groudon's Tough Claws+Sun-boosted STAB V-Create is so obscenely powerful it's as much of an automatic "Delete Enemy Pokemon" button as it sounds; even with absolute maximum defense, something as bulky as ER's buffed Regigigas (140/120 physical bulk, btw) is OHKO'd 75% of the time. And by absolute maximum defense; I mean WITH a defense-boosting nature; if Regigigas is even a neutral nature, V-Create is a guaranteed OHKO. Heck, in sunlight, Groudon's V-Create is so powerful, it has about a 50% chance to outright *OHKO Kyogre.* And those are both assuming you went Primal instead of using a Choice Band or something, AND that you had a neutral nature! Groudon's niche is as a completely unstoppable wallbreaker; levelling so much raw power condensed into as few hits as possible that you simply DO NOT wall it. Heck, if you take into account an Attack Boost on an Adamant PDon, *IT HAS NEARLY A 20% CHANCE TO OHKO LUGIA THROUGH ITS MULTISCALE EVEN WITH ABSOLUTE MAXIMUM DEFENSE.* +1 252+ Atk Tough Claws Groudon-Primal V-create vs. 252 HP / 252+ Def Multiscale Lugia in Sun: 361-426 (86.7 - 102.4%) -- 18.8% chance to OHKO The power difference is negligible since Groudon's already hitting so astronomically hard that basically nothing can survive it, so the better defensive utility of PDon is vastly preferred.

If you are playing doubles you could tank it's Speed and run it on a trick room team Multi head charge beam is really good for setting up to +3 SpA It sets up its own electric terrain and can nuke stuff with 3 hit Rising Voltage It has Flash Cannon Bug Buzz and Aurora Beam for Coverage And can slow pivot out with teleport if you want
