My wife and I bought some ground in Southern Missouri. It is our goal to start a Black Walnut forrest. The state helps with seedlings, etc. Thanks for the wonderful video. That is a great farm you have there.

Thanks for sharing. (Our family has been growing walnut for about 55 years and pruning for 40-45 years; for timber harvest only not nuts). I would recommend that severe forks shown from 9:00-10:00 on the younger trees be pruned much earlier in the life of the tree. Pruning out forks should be a top priority. On a given tree you may end up pruning out forks several times in life of tree to achieve a single dominant stem to your ultimate length of clear stem.

We looked at the Hybrids 40 years ago and decided the cost and the requirement for wrapping them and unwrapping them did not fit my plan. Also the cost per tree was more than we wanted to pay. I acquired my trees from the state forest service. The cost was $.05 per tree, Hybrids were $1.50 per tree plus the wrappers were $1.50 per tree. If you are planning to just plant them and walk away. Save your money and use the state trees. We found that 300 per year worked out in the planting stage. Spacing is also important. We were advised to plant one black walnut then one white oak at 10 feet intervals. Then in 15 to 20 years cut the white oak out. My decision was to plant all black walnut at 10 feet apart. This required me to train them every 4 to 5 years, so they would grow tall and straight. This training was to remove the lower 1/3 of the limbs. I found that produced a tall and straight trees (for the most part). After 10 years the trees started to produce new seediness. So the last 1,000 trees cost was $0.00. At the 25 year point the smaller trees started to die out the. This will leave them about 20 feet apart and 15 to 20 feet to the first limb. Remember in a normal forest ( trees are 4 to 5 feet spicing) you can plan to harvest about 5 to 10 % veneer trees. We figure wwe have 60%+ veneer trees. Growing this kind of forest is not time communing, but requires you to plan your time. We found this kind of work very rewarding and refreshing and an escape to my usual occupation. Good luck and use the forest rangers in your area. That is their job and they are very good at this and your taxes pay for this service. Mitch mrsongbird1@gmail.com
