Ground Rats, Tree Rats, Sky Rats - Air Rifle Pest Control

Welcome to my 50th, and extended episode. I'm shooting Ground Rats, Tree Rats and Sky Rats in this episode over three permissions!
I'm shooting Brown Rats, Squirrels and Feral Pigeons in this episode.
These different species of rats/vermin cause havoc with farms and businesses and culling them helps protect the property, food supplies and income.
This is the first time Squirrel pest control has featured in any ARPC videos but hopefully, there will be more over the coming summer!

Reminds me of a story told by a Soldier in the book General Hal Moore wrote; We Were Soldiers Once, and Young. He noticed a VC enemy soldier poking his head in a small V in a tree, so he shot. The head disappears, then a few moments later the head was back. He shot again. This happened quite a few times and the Soldier was frustrated because he knew he was a good shot and shouldn’t have missed that many times. When the battle was over, the Soldier went to the tree and found 8 enemy VC dead. All had shots to the head.

" 3rd kill shot a rat-trick." LMAO! on our ranch we have Norwegians, Kangaroo rats, deer mice, and field mice. I finally put my TLR-2G light on my HW44. I need to do some sniping. I killed 68 mice/rats in one week using the trashcan of water with swivel top, coated in peanut butter. Most ranchers out here make traps. I've got a few types. They breed back in about six weeks out here. They go for car wires. Little varmints.

Yes, they are very destructive. I enjoy feeding them to the owls that stop by at night. I bribe them, and they don't kill my ducks and chickens. We have a mutual enemy, the varmint rat and mouse.

The work you do in the pest control industry is much under stated. The general population do not understand the importance of the airgun culture. Clean efficient despatch of vermin by lead pellet only targets the vermin in needed. Unlike poison which is introduced into the food chain where poisoned rats are predated by raptors and other none targeted species. I do understand the need for poison before someone jumps on my back about it. Sorry if this turned into a rant 🤔👍

Haha. It was not a rant. I absolutely agree with you, even though they are rats I like to to ensure a clean dispatch so they are not in pain. People say you are cool, but if they compare the death of a rat from an air rifle pellet to that of poison, they will think again. It is incredibly humane if done correctly. Not only that, it does indeed guarantee only the best is taken out and no other animal suffers.

Where are you from? Are you not allowed to go to your ranch? I live in the city of San Antonio, Texas but our ranch is located about 20 minutes away. If I get a chance to get away from the city, I prefer to go there for hunting or target shooting as long as it's not a public location.

Do you charge money for these permissions? I’m wondering how would be best to obtain permissions and wether farmers etc would be willing to allow somebody like myself who is responsible and sensible but who doesn’t carry out pest control as a day job to shoot on their premises. Could you do a video with some advice on starting out aimed at people like myself? Top shooting btw. I watch a lot of channels and videos and rate you highly! 👍🏻

Thanks Aaron. I appreciate your kind comments. I obtained these permissions by asking around and speaking to farmers. some of these have come about through recommendations from those farmers. It's difficult to offer some blanket advice, because every situation is different but don't be afraid to go out and ask. Pest are a real problem and are costly for the farmers, and many are happy for you to help. Rats are the biggest problem and generally over the winter months so you need to be prepared to go out in all weathers. At the moment alot of air gunners seem to be using jsb heavies, is it just the lads with atn abl? Your lads a star

Hi mate. For me, that's the case, yes. I always used AADF's (made by JSB I believe!) but switched to JSB Exact Heavies because they're 10.34gr. The Ballistic Calculator on the Scope needs a minimum weight of 10gr to run the calculations and adjust the reticle and PoI. The ABL enables this by sending the range to the calculator, it's actually the calculator needs the heavier pellet not the ABL but as they're used together for this reason, you'll see people in using the heavier pellet. And thanks, my little man is awesome. He's loving the shooting at the moment! 👍👍

Hey there! I don't know actually. I've never thought about that. Why do you ask? There are a lot about and I'm expecting more this winter (fingers crossed!) following lockdown!

Where u live do u need a permit for pest control on things other then rats?

In the UK we have a General Licence which permits shooting of birds for health and crop protection. This varies from time to time as to what you're allowed to shoot. Other than that, squirrels, rats, foxes etc are all deemed pests and don't require a license.

'Pellets are cheap' Crap pellets are cheap, good hence popular pellets certainly aren't. £8/12 for .177 and £10/14 for .22 at the time of posting isn't what I call cheap. Fortunately ALL my rifles love RWS Superfields so it doesn't break the bank, plus I buy in bulk.

Air Rifle Pest Control Hi, Yeah, I shoot quite a few, I find if you sit still enough they will walk straight past a couple of feet away, nope I don’t record off my day setup, sometimes record off night vision but I wouldn’t have time to workout how to get it on you tube. I am always amazed how you guys do it.

Absolutely. I've put a hole in a barn in the past with a sub 12.

@@arpc Is that true? How far were you from the barn? I find that amazing. I saw the guy at andy's air guns (kzbin.info/www/bejne/nWfCqJJ_fZagd6c) and a 12 pounder. It would not even penetrate a jacket at 10 feet.. But I do not know what pellet he was using nor the air pressure on the gun.. I do not really like this fellow much but I thought he would give some information.. So thanks for the heads up..

Probably about 12 yards. That said, I don't know the stage if the barn. It backed into a cattle pen and I thought it was probably rotten from cow urine and the leaking roof. Luckily, the landowner was the one who told me to take the shot. He didn't care, it was coming down but it was interesting that the pellet punched through.

@@arpc yeah.. that is good information to have.. thanks I was thinking of doing something like this.. do you charge for your service? and what do you charge.. I was thinking of a flat rate like 65 bucks for two to three hours of shooting in one night and if it is bad enough maybe two more hours latter in the week.. What do you think? to much? just in the thinking phase right now.. But with gas and recharging plus removal of the rats that seemed fair to me.. But I do not really know.. thanks for your videos and you time brother be safe and carry on!

It depends on what you are wanting to shoot, and the sort of ranges you want. I have looked at FAC, but I always come back to sub 12 for what I need.

@@arpc mostly crows because the 17 hmr and .243 that I have are too loud and but they do long range im only wanting 60 yards I shoot crows with an sub ft/lb air rifle short range but im wanting something a bit more power full I might use a .22lr with subsonic rounds that should get the job done and still be very quiet I shoot crows with shotguns but again its loud
