Okay. Folks, I was a biology major. I currently am involved in veterinary science and volunteer with my pets for animal assisted therapy. No one loves animals more than I do. But jobs like this are just plain necessary for the continued health of the ecosystem. Period. I know many of you get angry seeing the cute furballs get shot, but that's their lot in life. I highly doubt any of you would care if they were ugly.

I definitely agree, plus it's the most humane way since the animal doesn't suffer unlike traps or poison. and you get to feed cats too

I'm not really sure I understand those who complain about the killing of pests. Killing an animal that's no danger to you, sure, I understand, but pests ARE a danger, but to your property and the ecosystem around you. It's a service to nature to remove pests.

I like your philosophy of not using pesticides. I am not a hunter nor am I very knowledgable about guns, but the air rifle seems to be the perfect tool for this. Anyone who has seen an animal in the throes of organic phosphate poisoning would agree that these animals are getting the better way out... I've watched a few of your videos and find them to be interesting. You go about pest control with a professional, responsible and economical way of doing things. I do not see how people think what you are doing is gratuitous or particularly mean. Looks like you enjoy your work. Kudos.

Good shooting there. Sadly i don't own (and don't really have enough money) airgun with enough impact to reliably kill the pests so i use 22LR. I often use guns more than i use poison since while not immediatly damaging, poison usage is doubful for berry farmer since it leaves taste defect for the berries. Also to the youtubers crying for the pests and demanding retribution, please understand that for many people, pests are directly damaging their jobs and lifestyle, and indirectly to mine. If no-one hunted pets at berry farms, for example, the price of berries would skyrocket since the harvest would be nonexistent. And that means industry must use more and more esseanses to emulate berries, leading to intake of even more bio-chemicals. And this is only on matter of berries. And if you just say "we can live without berries" then can you live whitout salad? vegetables? yes. What do you need then? Meat. Where does meat come from? What you are doing, activists, is something unnatural. That is going against the way of life, the way how nature works. Life is a cycle of death, and only by accepting it can you truly say you are natural.

we do need to thin out rodent populations all over the US as wild life lands are getting smaller, predators are effected as well and rodent populations blossom, this directly effects people with growing illnesses and property damage. this is not animal abuse ether, we must aid in the natural offset by the animals that are not hunting in the populated areas.. keep up the good work

A few decades ago I was a caddy at an unnamed country club. I COULD have taken up golf as Mondays was 'caddy day' and no members were on the course. BUT, at that time I was far more interested in the 'shooting sports' and had acquired a Sheridan Blue streak. Since the course had a 'plethora' of 13 striped ground squirrels, i.e. gophers; I requested the caddy master for permission to 'reduce their number'. So for two summers, every Monday, while the caddies were 'duffing their way on the course' I was 'varmint hunting' and enjoying every minute of the mini safari!! (I enjoyed your recollection of your boy hood stalking adventures!)

Obviously, they've changed their policy or something because your newer videos show slow motion again, which I love because I get to actually see where it hit, effects of the impact, and the projectile's trajectory. Without slow motion it's almost impossible to see if it impacted the animal fatally or just grazed it or was a near miss on an animal that might have ducked coincidentally at almost the exact time. I haven't watched your videos in probably 4 years and I'm glad you are still doing them. It's like coming home again. Lol.

I would love to have the little beast like the one you're using in this video. I have a Crossman 400 Repeater (it's .22 call CO2 powered rifle from the 50s and 60s) that's in need of some parts. Is there any danger to the cats from the led? I am target shooting indoors with a led trap and a cheap springer. I have been looking for cheap non lead pellets because I feel the need to vacuum every time I practice. Edit: I do it indoors because it is illegal to do it outdoors for about 5-15 miles in every direction. Even on your own property. B( even with my $10 bb gun that can't put a hole all the way through an empty pop can.

Aaron Reichert I like to buy mine on Amazon.com. Crossman makes good lead free pellets, like their Silver Angel. You can try hollow point pellets which expand in impact for a quicker, more humane kill when hunting. Pointed pellets don't expand. They just pass right through for deeper penetration. With one of my air rifles, only pointed pellets will pass all the way through a steel tomato can. Wad cutter pellets have a flat noise which somehow makes them more accurate. They are a great middle ground between pointed and hollow point pellets, and they're very accurate.

Personally I think poison is cruel, the animal dies in agony. Shooting is much less evil in most circumstances the animal it completely unaware it ever happened. I reject any idea there is a humane way to kill an animal lol, lets be honest, you cant be humane and kill they are not compatible lol. But pests must be dealt with, and in all cases shooting is the right option.

This video was in my recommended list even though it's old. I once had a problem with ground squirrels. I thinned them down to almost nothing with a very accurate 177. I eventually switched to a 22 and it's way more forgiving than a 177, but that was at the end of my pest problem. They are starting to come back, but I'm moving, so I guess they'll be the next owners problem. I will miss the target practice though.

I have a Crosman 1077 that claims 625 fps. it has a stock smooth bore barrel which I will be upgrading soon to rifled. it has taken pigeons inside 15 yards with no problem. I have moved to the mountains in Colorado, my new residence has a problem with some burrowing animal. I've only been here two days so I haven't had time to see what they are. will my Crosman be capable enough to eliminate something like a 13 lined ground squirrel?

Would a .177 caliber be as effective? I currently have both .177 and .22 air rifles.

Warfarin is now handled as a hazardous medication so special disposal is required. Not sure what concentration warfarin is in poison, but it seems weird they would allow that. Maybe its different now (just noticed the video was uploaded 2012)

Have you tried hooking a yard sprinkler up to a motion-sensing security light? You will need a solenoid valve from a lawn irrigation sprinkler system. Once you have the valve, all you need to do is feed power to the valve from a light socket on the motion-sensing light fixture (if the valve is low voltage, you will need a transformer to step down the voltage from the light socket) The wiring should be fairly simple, and the water for the sprinkler head can be from a standard garden hose.

What about the lead pellets, aren't those poisonous to the cats? I mean, i know the pellets probably don't stay in the animals body but do any fragments or residues remain on the animal's bones after a shot?

Lead pellets contain the element called state of California it could cause cancer but yes it could or could not be dangerous
@gazzmilsom

Yes and no. Yes being a heavy metal lead is toxic and its also stored in the bodies fat reserves so it doesn't go away. However unlike a high powered rifle bullet an air rifle pellet does not fragment and the weight loss of the pellet is negligible. Indeed rifle lead contamination is so minimal farmed meat can actually contain more lead than wild shot meat. And even if they ate the pellet it will pass right through. Issues concerning animals eating lead shot centre around water birds eating lead shot from shotguns alongside grit to aid digestion. Here as a bird may consume a lot of lead shot poisoning becomes an issue. But a cat eating the odd air rifle pellet would probably die naturally before the levels of lead it had been in contact with became toxic.

They are pellet guns. Different from airsoft and BB guns., pellet guns fire pellets usually made of led. Just look them up. They are great for targets or hunting small to medium game depending on the caliber of the pellet.

Where I live we have large populations of gophers as people call them. They are actually Richardson ground squirrels and can number in the thousands in some pastures. We like to use. 22 250 Rem, .223 Rem and. 220 Swift for the long shots. Early in the season you can use .22 rimfire but they get spooky after awhile and it's all long range shots. Of course no cattle in the pasture yet and buildings or nearby dwellings. The Thirteen line ground squirrel is not very common and we don't shoot them, I kind of like them. Cheers
