Nick Johnson, CEO of the New Zealand Thoroughbred Breeders Association, is joined by Dr Frances Peat BVSc PhD MS PGCertSc DACVSMR and Dr Dave Keenan BVSc MANZCVS to discuss a groundbreaking eight-year veterinary study that aims to reshape the evaluation of radiographic findings in racehorses.
This research began in 2016 at the Keeneland September Sale, where 2,795 yearlings were examined. The study focuses on radiographic findings in the proximal sesamoid bones of the fetlock and the medial femoral condyle of the stifle, seeking to determine how these findings impact future racing success.
As horses from the study hit the racetrack, the results challenged traditional, subjective interpretations of veterinary findings. Learn how this research could lead to more objective, science-based evaluations, benefiting buyers, sellers, and veterinarians alike.
With insights from top experts and data collected through sales and ultrasonographic evaluations, this study could revolutionize how we perceive a horse’s suitability for racing, ensuring fewer missed opportunities for success.
