The best little detail in my mind, is that when he takes the old man to the hospital, in the background you see a kid with a broken leg, the same one who later falls out of the tree . He realized can't save the old man but can save the kid's leg.

The movie does a great job of showing Phil progress as a human being. He starts out doing things for himself for ulterior motives like as a setup to catch Rita, but then he starts doing things for others and to improve his being because he wants to and it makes him feel good.

@bluebear1985 I agree to an extent. It was hilarious at first. It got very old, quick, though. We only had 2 channels at the time to watch. One was whatever the ship decided to play and the other was news from the Department of the Navy, which has dog water production quality. I love this movie because of the memory and it's genuinely a good movie but I also kinda grimace because it really took away one of our few amenities after being out at sea for so long. It still ends up putting a smile on my face, though.

That tradition comes from German-speaking regions in Europe where on Candlemas (Feb. 2) if a badger emerges from its den and sees its shadow there will be FOUR more weeks of cold, wintry weather. The Pennsylvania Dutch (Deutsch) brought the superstition to N. America - and somehow an extra TWO weeks got added to the formula. Phil addresses the old man as 'pop' and 'dad' as a term of endearment. "Doctor" was also just used as a sign of respect, since he straightened out the man's back.

there no defining amount of time for how long Phil remained in the time loop, but the most popular estimated calculation is nearly 34 years (33 yrs & 350 days). At first, Harold Ramis (director) suggested 10,000 years was a possibility, but there have been many more likely suggestions/estimates varying from 8 to 40 years.

@Progger11
@Progger11 6 күн бұрын
True, but the film implies that even though Phil is the only one fully aware of the loop, Rita at least senses it in a less conscious way ("there is something so familiar about this..."). So, I like to think that subconsciously, Rita retains some of their previous warm moments together from prior loops, and that helps her feel more comfortable with Phil's declaration of love for her, knowing it is truely sincere.

Yes, Bill Murray did save someone from choking! In 2025, while dining at a steakhouse in Phoenix, Arizona, Bill Murray noticed a man choking at a nearby table. He quickly performed the Heimlich maneuver, successfully dislodging the food and saving the man's life. Murray mentioned that he had learned the Heimlich maneuver while working on the movie "Groundhog Day" and was glad he could use the skill in a real-life situation.

It's so refreshing to watch this with someone who doesn't know what it's about. It's become such an ingrained part of American culture that even if someone hasn't seen it before, they still know about the time loop aspect of it, and what to expect in that regard. It's also the first movie to have the repetition over and over. Previous movies would have time travel and then return. Speaking of which, you should watch Back to the Future, and 2 sequels. 😊

Knowing how temperamental Bill Murray can be as a person, director Harold Ramis (also Bill's co-star in two "Ghostbusters" films and the movie "Stripes") reportedly filmed "Groundhog Day"'s scenes in reverse order, so Bill was nicer when they started shooting and progressively got more grumpy, sour, and difficult to work with as the production continued, which helped his performance as a side benefit.
@dabreal82
@dabreal82 8 күн бұрын
False... The movie was filmed like any other. Any scene that needs to be filmed on a certain set gets filmed at the same time. No film is ever filmed in chronological order from beginning to end. Unless you are talking about small budget/independent movies to save...
@dan_hitchman007
@dan_hitchman007 8 күн бұрын
@@dabreal82 Bill Murray has a reputation for getting grouchy and mean as the days and months progress in a shoot. They would shoot the scenes with him being a good guy FIRST and shoot the scenes where he was at his grumpiest LAST. If they were repeating sequences in rapid succession in one location to show progression of time, they would also film the happiest parts first and work backwards. They didn't want Bill filming scenes of his character being sweet and kind when he was getting mean and surly in real life.
@dabreal82
@dabreal82 8 күн бұрын
@dan_hitchman007 where is your proof of a any of this? You first said "supposedly" now you're saying he has "a reputation". The only thing I can find is that him and Ramis got into a dispute on the set and didn't talk to each other for years. Murray was also going through a divorce while filming groundhog Day. And Dan aykroyd saying he has mood swings and was difficult to work with... Nothing about rearranging the way movies he worked on were filmed in any special order...

So stinking cute, Inna. Since this came out, there have been loads of people reliving the day things. None are better! You need to watch some old old movies. People would climb in on the passenger side and slide across. The cars all had a "bench" seat. They were listed as for three passengers, but you could sit however many as would fit. Trucks were the last holdout, but even with them, it's all been switched to a split bench. You are a treasure to watch. Please carry on.

Just got back from Punxsutawney today. Phil saw a shadow, so 6 more weeks of winter. We'll see tomorrow if I end up back in today again, but the other 6 times I visited for Groundhog Day celebrations I was fine.

It is a holiday in Canada as well. Canada has Wiarton Willy and The U.S. has their ground hog as well. It is to show if we how much more winter there will be ,or if the winter will be shorter. If the ground hog sees it shadow that mean there is more winter left, but if not then early spring.

It's so hilarious now how people wait for end credit sequences because of Marvel. I used to sit and watch the credits in the theater just to decompress from the movie and listen to the closing song. Only John Hughes or the AIRPLANE! guys would put something after the closing credits or even during.

This is the "loop" movie. -And it's AMAZING! (There's other things touched on, like Phil fights the 7-deadly sins, and must become more perfected in his 'purgatory' (Also, St. Rita is the female patron saint of 'impossible causes (difficulties)) Other Buddhist things that Im not familiar with. -Such a GREAT movie!

About the big beers... Pennsylvania was settled mainly by Germans. And of course the two of them are sitting in a German cuisine restaurant. And if you look closely, you can see a banner in the background that says "Happy Groundhog Day" in German.

Bill Murray, who played Phil, sometimes has his brother Brian Doyle-Murray take on small roles in his films. Brian played the mayor, announcing that the groundhog saw his shadow.

@baron7755 It was not intended that way. I only mentioned that because Bill has gotten more recognition, and was thus more well-known. It was just my intention to point out their relationship. I realize that he has done numerous roles because he earned them, and not because of his brother.

@baron7755 In fact, I'm glad you brought that up. Truthfully, I only remember Brian in one other movie starring Bill, that being Scrooged. That's why I said 'sometimes' in my original comment. Brian 'sometimes' shows up in Bill's movies.

Phil lived the perfect day, and you gave the perfect reaction. ;-) This is a "Phil"osophical" Fable with the moral being....."If you don't GROW, you are doomed to repeat the same day". OR "You never wake up tomorrow, so might as well make the best of today". Now that you've seen this you MUST watch another GREAT film..."Edge of Tomorrow", (Groundhog Day on STEROIDS ;-) I can't wait to see your reaction.
