group 1 production car series involving Ford Cortina XR6 Intercepter, Alfa GTV6 2.5, BMW 535i

Back in the 1960s I used to drive from Durban to Kyalami for the 9 hour endurance race. You new which were the Ford GT40s as the disc brakes were red hot, and the glow could be seen from almost around the track. As for the XR 6, what a car. I bought a white one with plush velour seats and carpets. I brought it to Perth Australia in 1983 and its only clocked up 87893 Km. Its been driven from Perth to Melbourne and back in 1985. Its now a HISTORIC car and spends it its time in the motor museum where its under cover and in a huge building which is temperature controlled. Its the only one as far as I know of that, in Australia.

I still remember the very first time I saw a Cortina My V, and it just happened to be an XR-6. It was late in 1979 and we all knew it was coming to South Africa. It was literally the talk of the town. Then we saw it. We immediately KNEW what it was. It was a red XR-6 doing doughnuts (burnouts) at the side of the road near the local Ford Dealer (Holmes Ford). My friend and I just looked at one another and exclaimed, "Do you know what that is? It's an XR-6". That moment was branded into my mind then and there. I grew up with those all around me. Every day one would hear that deep growl racing up and down the neighbourhood, usually until quite late at night . They were everywhere. Now they are very scarce. I really miss that beautiful sound.

Fantastic footage, I was at this race meeting, 24 April 1982 if I remember corr ectly, the Ford's battled to match the BMs and Alfas in the dry but in wet conditions Sarel vd Merwe was untouchable.

I watched Sarel vd Merwe race a NASCAR stock car at Watkins Glen,N Y. substituting for an injured Darrel Waltrip.
