France consistently poor, with very negative tactics, but tend to have just enough talent to get them over the line, in spite of thier coach. The difference between them and England is that they have won things in living memory, meaning that unlike England they don't have a nation of fans filled with dread and anxiety resulting in frustration bubbling to the surface at the slightest sign of perceived failure.

They keep mentioning Argentina's loss to Saudi Arabia as evidence that teams can start badly and win tournaments but Argentina would have walked that game if Lautaro Martinez didn't miss at least 3 chances he should have put away. Argentina didn't play badly, they just couldn't score, we're playing every game like it's a pre-season friendly.

Saka was our best attacking player and got subbed first every game and then they ask why we aren’t scoring goals. His was the only assist of the group stages. And no he wasn’t great for every minute he played in every game but he was overall more effective than Kane or Foden. If you keep subbing your best performer for Bowen or Palmer then don’t complain when you can’t get the results

If Bowen was so good then why did he not come on instead of Palmer? If Saka isn’t good enough why is he starting? If he is, why is he coming off in every game whilst foden and Kane stay on? England have done really well getting to the Euro finals let alone the last 16 of it. "Pride goeth before a fall" and that has plagued the England side and England fans alike for decades. Pride could be the thorn in their side. Perhaps Southgate and his players are approaching these finals with a tactical sobriety based on that incite/hindsight that the fans(lost in their proud delirium and unreasonable expectations) are just too myopically minded to grasp, that might explain the disconnect leading to the "unusual environment". By all means let the team go forward with the courage of a lion but leave "pride" out, it might be the key to avoid a fall this time around. Perhaps the best tactic for both the team and fans alike is to be humble before being humbled, again.

Don’t want be the party clasher here but it felt to me like England being matched up against teams they thought they surely would be winning against and subsequently went into as clear favorites was the problem. The worse the opponent, the more they struggled. So I honestly believe falling onto the „easy“ side of the draw was not necessarily a good thing for a team like England. Facing Germany, Spain or France, the big hitters, it feels to me like they would’ve gone into it with a very different mentality and hunger. We’ll have to see if they can mobilize that motivation against teams like Austria and Switzerland which are seemingly worse than them but can really hurt you if you don’t know what you’re doing.

Imagine if in your day job you had loads of people who have never done your job to a similar standard or people that used to do your job when it was very very different hammering you day in day out. Would it improve your performance? Would it make you want to fight hard for those people? I get that the performances haven’t been great but maybe if the players aren’t so afraid of making mistakes and letting people down they would play with more freedom.

The overall format of the tournament needs changing. Either reducing back to 4 groups, or expanding to 8 groups, and including countries, most likely like Ireland, Wales, Iceland, Bosnia etc. I dont like teams qualifying from 3rd place, firstly because the smaller nations are more likely to play a low block, three times, whereas if the top 2 only are qualifying, teams generally will have to play more expansive football, and aim to score goals and win at least once. Secondly I think with rewarding mediocrity in this way, I worry over time, the European countries could be impaired when it comes to WC group stages. Let's make the Euros the same format as the WC? Edit: Also its unfair on nations that miss out on qualifying in 3rd, from more competitive groups, such as Ukraine in this tournament. When 3 teams have qualified from Englands group, when frankly none of them deserve to progress.

Here's an idea for euro 2028 : 6 groups with 4 teams, 3 games for each team, like this year. But here's a twist: the best 16 teams would qualify for the round of 16, no matter the initial groups. The better team, for example with 9 points and a 9-1 differential in goals would play the team in 16th place. The second team would play the 15th, the third against the 14th... and you get the idea. This way, teams would have to play the 3 games to win and to score goals if they want to have a better draw along the way. This should provide us with better games instead of the awful ones we got this week...

I seem to rrmember the Euros in 2016, where England didn't impress in the Group Stage. However, surely they'd come alive against the Icelandic minnows!? It just seems that the English media and fans are filled with a madness! They believe they SHOULD beat teams, an enitlement that often leads to them being stung! You have to earn every victory! Micah has been guilty of making the should' statements. They seem to forget that other teams have quality players! They are usually the favourites - yes in England, where English people bet! They are not the favourites in other countries! They will be dismissive of Slovakia as an inferior team. England will be favourites here, but would it be a shock if Slovakia won? Not at all! And when England lose anc bow out of the competition - there'll be all sorts of abuse hailed at Southgate and various players! So many fans believe that if they don't win they've failed- which touches on delusional!? What a poison chalice for any nanager! No wonder the players, look like they've got lead in their boots!

I'm Dutch, so not in the best mood after the Austria game (although Austria deserves a lot of credit for how they played). I hate this tournament setup. NL should have been out of the tournament. Instead they play Romania in the next round. If they beat them they will meet up the winner of the Austria/Turkey game and thus potentially playing Austria again? Going by the principle of each tournament winning team will play at least one really bad game during the tournament the Dutch might beat the Austrians at that quater final (if they overcome Romania ofcourse who you can't underestimate) and the Dutch might even reach the semi finals which would be considered a good result by any nation. What a BS!

I’ve noticed this about English sport (and I say this as an Englishman). While it’s at its worst in Rugby Union, English fans - generally - completely overlook the qualities of ‘lesser’ teams. Most of these lesser teams, that are doing well, are full of top players that play in Germany, France, Spain etcetera. We English fans seem to think we have some sort of divine right. If we win, just, we’ve played badly. If we lose, we’ve played terribly. It might just be that we’re underestimating the opposition.

I personally think that when you have some of the best players in the world then you have certain expectations. It’s not arrogance but expectations that results will match talent. @@32446 True, you do have some of the best players and since they excel in the PL you might expect them to be top notch. But that doesn't mean that you therefore can ignore whats happening in the Spanish, Italian, French or German leagues. They have top players too. I am not bashing England since I've been following British football (Scotland included being an Aberdeen fan as a young boy and N.I. having Gerry Armstrong and Norman Whiteside posters in my room) since the 80s and I really would love to see them do great, but I see this happen at every tournament i followed since 1982. Yes, they did reach the final, but I was quite amazed that Mr. Southgate wasn't sacked after that game. Playing at Wembley and managing only one shot on target (which happen to go in) and only having 39% possesion? If that happened in NL (i'm Dutch) the coach would have been sacked
