Dude, you rock. We've been using a Garden Tower for 6 years in the Midwest after seeing this video and buying one. Great idea, and perfect for my tiny condo here. It grows mostly salad greens -- lettuce, kale, mustard, arugula, bok choy -- which I harvest and replace with seeds I start in flats all year long, from March through November. In the top, I grow 4 peppers. The big drawback of this model is that the back 1/3 is unusable since the plants get no light. From the looks of things, they solved this issue with the Garden Tower 2, where they've built the planter on a lazy Susan-style turntable. Another issue: our worms often die during our intense summer heat. I think the compost can grow too hot. So I've taken to using the tube as a compost bin, mixing half brown (usually shredded paper and potting mix from my microgreen flats) and half green (kitchen scraps and garden clippings from my zucchinis, tomatoes, etc. I empty the tube on the 1st and 15th of every month and end up with excellent compost in 4-6 weeks. For folks like us with severely limited space, it's a primo solution. We love that I can compost in it, something we'd be unable to do given my hyper-strict homeowner's association since they do not allow garbage receptacles outside except on trash days.

(1) You can install a drawer pull (handle) on the top cap to make it easier to pick up. (2) You can mount the tower on a solar-powered rotating platform so all the plants get the same amount of sun. (3) You can incorporate a sump and a pump on a timer to reuse the water automatically. This would allow you to go on a trip and not have to worry about who's going to water the garden! (4) The plug in the bottom would be nearly impossible for me to access because I'm old. I would use the center for the sump pump pipe, and do my composting elsewhere. If the tower was black, it would heat up the soil a little more. (5) Thanks for the extensive and complete discussion about the whole process. I built one of these towers myself, have a video up on the build. Was fairly easy and did not cost too much. I have not had a chance to plant in it yet due to winter coming on, but I filled it with some compost from my local recycle center. Looking forward to growing next year.

use a piano dolly under the tower for indoor use so you can rotate it without stressing the legs by pushing or twisting to position for the sun.

I'm not completely sold on this idea although it does look pretty etc you can still get great results out of a small raised garden bed or some nice containers without the cost and stuffing around. I'd be inclined to create a wall garden with a drip watering system before a barrel or vertical tower if the aim is to save space but each to their own!

i know numerous who have tried these gimic yes make you worm droppings blah blah blah and the little ampount of worm droppings you might get wont amount to enough to make a difference with the plant load growing in the barrell, #1 you will need to rotate it #2 the whole system is above grouns exposed so will heat up pretty hot if in full sun so forget growing and cool loving plants and herbs that cant handle about 80 degress #3 worms well they wont like the excessive heat either so kiss them good bye #4 now lets get to the food scraps ok if the worms break them down and they also decompose lets see how you handle mice rats rodents that will also like the feast on the worms and half rotted food, #5 ok food scraps done ok guys NOW tip the barrell to get eh scraps out the bottom........... nope i will stick like self sufficient me says a small raise bed garden OR a vertical tower with a drip irrigation hydroponics or a vertical wall garden

Here’s the deal: Not all of us have lots of space. Going vertical allows us to do more with less space. A wall system may or may not work depending on where you live. I live in an apartment building and the way the back yard is set up, you’d have to build a wall to have a wall system. This could be set in the yard. These cost $360 - $500. You can make it for a lot less. I do agree that in order to use the whole thing you’d probably have to rotate it and on legs, that would not be feasible. As for the worm castings, the worms are also going to be crawling around in the planted areas, aerating the solid and leaving worm castings. I think it’s a nice addition but one could make a barrel planter without the addition of worms. All in all, it’s an interesting idea but I don’t have the disposable income to buy one and I do wonder about what happens with the north side of it.

Too many holes in this. I thought about doing something with 175 IBC tote. few 5 gallon buckets for the worms. maybe 16 holes. Whats an IBC totes space under 2 square meters? IDK Marc, maybe concentrated worm poo makes it work.

@@babichevi7950 With no wheels the first thing I thought of was a hand truck. he could use all sorts of things with wheels to tote it with. I found some of these for $500 to $600 online. They came with the wheels and water system and liquid feed. Still building one would be a lot cheaper and fun.

@Belgrave Wallace like many pointed out cost wise overpriced , not that efficient, not simple or easy to move unless you have a heavy wheel cart or build it on a carousel i have 55 years of gardening and trying and testing for companies various gimmicks and garden accessories that people have put out to the pubic as schemes and legitimate products, and i fully agree with self sufficient me i would do a drip irrigation before i would waste time on this barrel and if in full sun this is going to go extreme temp swing more so then a raised would because it doesn't have the mass to absorb or buffer the temperature swings atleast a raised bed has some buffering and belgrave if you do not care for my post shrug oh well not a major issue i only pointed out issues and/or short comings i saw

Nice John. I actually built two towers similar to the commercial version and put them on a wagon I built out of pallet lumber. I also added a drip irrigation at the top and a water collector at the bottom. I water every other day and recycle the collected water on the off days.

John - I feed my worms my finished compost too. But another food they LOVE - and make tons of babies in is the pulp from when I juice. It is broken down into such small bits the worms go crazy!!!

This is relatively easy to make. You'll gnna need a Plastic Drum, Jigsaw or cutting tool of some sort (to be able to cut through the plastic drum), Heat gun (to curve the flaps and form it similar to this one, Large pvc pipe (to be placed in the middle) and a Threaded End Cap for the buttom part of the pvc pipe.

Organic soils should last for years, if not forever. Rock dust stays in the soil a long time. Just add some nutrient amendments every few grow cycles. Over time it ends up being affordable.

Sean Cleary You do realize that my point was if I were build this in the way described, it would never pay for itself. I don't eat 20 bucks worth of lettuce a week... And do you think that all the various additions will give more than a 25% benefit over not adding them at all? I'm not a farmer who can sell excess, so all produce that I don't eat/give away just goes to waste. It's interesting, but completely impractical for small family farming.

I built my own and it has been working well for several years now. I started with lettuce and kale and now grow strawberries. The worms have a tough time in the winter but survive. It took me about 1-2 hours to build and about $10 or less. Well wort the effort.

I just bought the Garden Tower. As a beginner gardener I was totally discouraged by your video. I think I counted 16 or 17 different additives, possibly thousands of dollars worth, to create your soil cocktail. Are they paying your for product endorsements?

richard G indeed , he puts way to much ( different) things in, way to expensive, way to much fertilizing stuff. There is no ( economical) benefit from using so many kinds and so much scoops of rock dust, just a tablespoon is sufficient.

richard G He states very clearly that if you cannot put the variety of rock dust then compost, earthworm castings and zeolite dust are the best additives. We did a simple mix of potting soil, peat moss, homemade compost, and zeolite which gave us great results this year.

Hi! The cap at the top should be black. If it creates heat during midday the worms will be flee the heat and seek the cool soil, pooping and laying eggs there. That's good for your system. Good job nice video :))

My method of planting the tower is to water each level as it is planted. John's fluffy soil mix compacts with the water. With each level watered and compressed, if the plants need to be adjusted, that's the best time to do it. Plus, the final watering doesn't take hours to complete. Yes! Worms are mighty workers for compost creation! The tower is a perfect system!! The worms will DROWN if liquid is on the bottom. Worms live on the bottom where the soil is cool. They crawl through the food scraps and worm castings to feed, then go down to the bottom to rest. That's the reason John found all of the worms UNDER the CARDBOARD. John should have known this worm behavior. He also should know that the entire point is to have the worms turn the food scraps into compost/castings. Take a minute to run the food scraps through a blender for 10 seconds. The scraps don't need to be liquefied but lightly chopped. The worms will feed voraciously on the smaller food scraps.

Does this plastic thing have BPA or other chemicals that will leak into the soil and then into the food?

I dont know what it's made of but if it's PVC and you alter it in any way, like here by cutting it, it can leak vinyl chloride into the soil. PVC is not made to be altered. Try chicken wire and burlap/coffee sacks, like I'm doing!!!

It's high density polyethylene...HDPE. And safe. They make kitchen cutting boards out of the stuff..and all your plastic drink bottles..

Great idea, I wonder though, how do the plants in the back get sun light. Do you have to constantly turn it around so all sides get enough sunlight? There is a video of someone making on of these. It's time consuming but much less expansive.

Exactly. I've been using this model for about six years since seeing this video. Plants on the back 1/4 to 1/3 die. I've tried everything, even growing vining crops like cukes or pole beans in the back. Except for the plants in the top slot or two, they still die. However, the manufacturers have solved this with the Garden Tower 2, where the planter swivels on a lazy Susan-style turntable. That would solve the issue, but it seems to me it's just something else to break. :-)

youve got probably what, couple HUNDRED dollars worth of materials there, which is fine and good for you, since you do a LOT of gardening and most of those bags hold many "servings" of product but for someone whos only gardening project is the tower, it doesnt seem feasible.

Ingenious! I have a friend using the $500 Tower Garden, but I don't like the "science lab" nature of aeroponics. I'm not sure I want my food bathed in a "mineral solution." My father had a real garden my whole life, so I prefer dirt. This is a great way to use a small patio to grow greens!

Just build your own! Get a 55 gallon Blue drum ( from Emergency Essentualasor other store or Craigs;ist), if you have a saw or other tools and some P Vc pipe and tubing easy! Just got be handy!! just like 1 of those strawberry pots on steroids!!
