I add some spent coffee grinds to the soil and I also plant Azaleas with them. They make great companions. You can hear them singing together at night.

This was great! I would have loved a minute or two of the actual HOW of doing things you said are important. I planted two varieties close to one another on the advice of the garden center. They seem to be thriving. Just wish the gardener stopped throwing away their tags! But I’m loving my first year in my garden!!!

Blueberries can be one of the easiest carefree heavy producing crops that most people overlook planting. They can also be a great landscaping bush that has beautiful fall colors and lush greenery in summer, with an added bonus of delicious healthy berries.

How would you fertilize/care/water, established plants...how would you plant new ones? Rich soil? Humus? Chicken fertilizer? How to increase acidity? How to know if you need to?( In established/new plants)

Sure, some sizes are larger than others, just like with any crop. But if you have a big-berried type and are not getting the big berries, there are reasons why...

I have 20 bushes of different ages, made up of 7 different varieties (to encourage crosspollination), all being the early summer harvest kind. I planted them along my two opposing chain link fenced in full sun. I bought them all as 2 year old, in 1 gallon container. Most varieties have beautiful and plentiful berries, some are just average and some have yet to start having any berries. I hear a lot of good thigs about Duke variety but it doesn't want to bloom for me. I bought my Dukes 2 years apart. They are now 6 and 4 years old. What am I doing wrong with the Dukes? Should I give them more time or should I replace them with a different variety.

Hey JS, certain variables definitely do better in certain conditions. It's hard to predict sometimes. I found fertilizing in the spring to really jump start Duke into action. What zone are you in?

@@TheRipeTomatoFarms I live just west of Toronto, in Ontario, Canada. By US standards it would be zone 5. By Canadian standards 6a. My blueberry bushes came with label claiming that they are good for zones 3 or 4. Each spring, when leaf buds start opening, I sprinkle a bit of aluminum sulphate to maintain the acidity of the soil. The first time I did this, I noticed a great improvement! I've been sprinkling a bit of all purpose fertilizer. What kind of fertilizer do YOU use for YOUR blueberries? The fertilizers in our stores and garden centres are labeled as all purpose, vegetables, or flowers. There is nothing that would say for berries or for blueberries. The Dukes look healthy but they just refuse to grow fruiting buds.

Check the pH and soil moisture.... If those are good, fertilize more in the fall leading up to winter dormancy.

@@TheRipeTomatoFarms mostly the soil, and watering, for new then established plants. Have one bush planted years ago, would like to see it " happier" wider, more branches. Would like to plant more, but concerned my soil may be to clay, they will be on a hill, near a water source that dries up end of spring into summer.. so it can he " extreme." But the older bush " survived" hopefully new ones will too. Also looking for " types" height and if any have " evergreen" of colorful fall foliage is important...since it would be literally center of hill, and can be seen by road!
