Very helpful -- I've got two young lemons growing from seed (about a year and a bit old now), and while they're doing great, we picked up a carton of the most delicious, sweet-smelling yellow key limes in south Georgia a few days ago...and I don't want to leave too much to chance in getting their seeds to grow (optimally, we're hoping forthe same perfectly delicious fruit). The info on polyembryony is fascinating -- and hopefully useful. Thanks for posting this.

Calamondin is another easily grown citrus that is true from seed. In addition to yuzu (with lots of fruit now), I am growing a Lemon from the Mariana Islands known as Kannu’on which is grown from seed too (not yet fruited, because I've abused it a few times, but is a very nice fast growing plant) . Incidentally most tree fruits are grown by cloning - apples, pears, citrus, bananas (not a tree!), peaches, etc. The unique qualities are kept this way. Seed grown plants of many of these will produce plants unlike the parent, often with undesirable characteristics.

Hi’ I liked how You described the temperature of growing the seed. My lemon is about a month and half and it’s growing very good .my question is ; I have a terranium with a frog in it , the temperature needs to be between 50-85 degrees, I placed the lemon seedlings inside for about two hours and it kind of bend slightly , I was wondering if it was a bad idea to place the lemon inside the terranium . The temperature is the same and it’s humid inside the terranium . Could it had been a good or bad idea
@Plant_lady_884 жыл бұрын
I will correct you on 1 thing in the beginning. The water doesn't go to the "germ", it goes to the embryo. Ok video, a little too slow and uncertain about many things. I would double check on soil and fertilizers before making the video. Does your compost stink up the house? I would be very hesitant about bringing manure in my house! The polyembronic thing was cool though!!

Coming here hoping somebody has the answer to a dilemma of mine, I have 3 key lime seedlings, 5 eureka lemon seedlings, well down to 4, one dried up and died and 2 palestine royal lime seedlings. I've been told that citrus doesn't like high temps prefers cool temps in 70° range so considering our home is hot since of march(averaging between 80 and 84° F. )I figured they were stressed from the heat, so I took them outside in a shady area, they're originally sowed in that special sustrate recommended for citrus, cactus, palms and what else, ferns? 2 more of the eureka lemons are very stressed, with their leaves drying up, and now one of the key limes is looking stressed, do they need iron, should I transfer the seedling to regular soil? As for the Royal limes, one is a beautiful 5 inches tall and got its first thorn, the other is still a baby, by the way it is a "poly", but the smaller plant died and the taller is still green, the 2 little leaves it sprouted dried up and fell off, but the stem is still green and if I'm not mistaken it has 2 little "nubbins", new leaf growth? When you mention you planted these seedlings in regular potting soil, coupla years ago a planted a red grapefruit seed, came up, did well, at about a foot tall, planted it in the garden space and it is now a good sized grapefruit tree but..no sweet, redcolored fruit, its fruit is yellowcolored and very SOUR! LOL....thanks for sharing your knowledge and considering you're busy with your own work and life, not expecting you to reply BUT it would be COOL if ya did! Uprated and sending ya greetings from Mexico. :)

Hello. I'm growing 2 lemon seeds that have already germinated in their cups. They are both about 2 weeks old with the stem popping up about 3/4". 2 questions: 1 When they reach the height of your Key Limes in this video do you transfer them to a bigger pot or wait another few inches? 2: When do you 1st fertilize them and can you recommend an organic citrus fertilizer? Thank you!
@wisnog996 жыл бұрын
craig k do not fertilize them for quite a while, if you fertilize them when they are too young you can burn the roots, let the root system develop a lot more, I wait a year before I first fertilize.

if you so happen to get a polyembryony and you say that the taller of the two might be the clone of the parent and the smaller of the two is something else would you then when the two grow together would you remove the smaller of the two plants or just keep them growing together side by side ?
@justgivemethetruth95410 жыл бұрын
Is there any documentation for your claim about the poly embryonic seeds? That is that if a seed sprouts polyembryonic - the taller one is a clone of the parent and will produce fruit true to the parent???? That is very cool. I have heard a lot about the sumo mandarin oranges and how great they are, but they are almost 100% seedless. However there are some fruits that have seeds them .. and I suppose of some of them will be poly-embryonic?

Key limes are not grown from clones anyway - they are a 'wild' citrus that does fine grown from seed anyway. Same with kafir limes, yuzu, and other 'wild' citrus. There are clones of these wild ones too - but they are not as unique as other citrus clones, that when grown from seen produce fruits (and plants) that are often unrecognizable as the parent type. Now these can be propagated vegetatively too - and quite easily - which is technically cloning - but this is done to speed up propagation - you save about a year to fruiting this way. I did not know about polyembryony - and I'm a botanist (though a field ecological botanist not a physiological one). Here is a paper on polyembryony in citrus: www.plantphysiol.org/content/110/2/599.full.pdf
