Superworms (also known as morioworms) are actually different than mealworms, they’re a separate insect. Superworms are quite large and they pupate in isolation. The mealworms that are treated are just considered “giant mealworms” as opposed to superworms. Superworms are actually fairly fascinating. They’re aggressive (as aggressive as a little worm can be lol) and have a defense mechanism that makes them musk liquid on you. I have pets that eat both mealworms and superworms, they’re a fun project to have :)

Yeah, I second that. Superworms are similar but require isolation to pupate. And both species can eat and partially digest polystyrene (i.e., Styrofoam).

I used to have a leopard gecko who ate both mealworms and superworms (zoophobas worms), but especially loved crickets. I remember keeping the mealworms in the fridge to slow down the pupating process and keep them docile for easy handling, plus grossing out any houseguests.

I have been doing this for a year and a half.I am 12 😂, I have a 4 year old leopard gecko her name is lea she’s been thru more than any thing you could ever image,let’s just say she dropped her tail Bc she somehow went thru the washing machine...she is fine now I’ve re taught her everything she needed to learn I was not home when it happened so when I heard I was historically crying but she learned so much and is such a fighter.we are very very proud and amazed that she didn’t have any permanent damage. She now walks, eats, drinks, sleeps, doesn’t run in circles anymore, sheds, and can see perfectly fine now. Breeding is definitely worth it for feeders it’ll save you money in the long run!!

In third grade I had a teacher who was an absolute gem. She wanted to get kids into science, so the class kept monarch butterfly caterpillars, and each group of desks had both a supply caddy, and a mealworm bin. I always wanted to take care of the mealworms, which worked fantastically for me, because the other kids hated them and thought they were gross. I was just really passionate about animals (I still am, honestly.) and wanted to see the little mealworms grow up. I remember when the first few in our bin pupated I was so excited! The teacher would take the beetles out and either release them or take them home (I think she kept a reptile? or alternatively something that would make use of the beetles?) but we always kept a few to keep the populations up. It was probably my favorite part of third grade, next to watching one of the caterpillars enter their chrysalis, making the entire class late to lunch because we wanted to watch the whole process.

I love your channel but there were a lot of beginner mistakes made. I would NOT suggest using oats or grain. You will get mold when your colony matures and keeping them on oats will not promote them to eat the vegetables. That grain is not great to be feeding your pets either. Instead keep them in organic potting soil and feed them. If you feed the correct amount you will not get mold as they must eat the veggies to survive. Meal worms are completely different from super worms and sprinkling a little chemical on the does not make meal worms into superworms. Superworms come from the zophobas beetle and meal worms come from the tenebrionidae beetle. While yes they are both "darkling" beetle larvae they are completely different in nutritional content.

@@TheFunctionalForce i use anything that is reptile safe to feed. If I have excess veggie scraps from making dinner I feed it to them. Carrots, potatoes, lettuce, cucumbers ect. I always soak veggies in water for 15-20 mins to allow the veggies to soak more water. Msg me on Instagram @_monster_kitten and I can show you my set up 👍🏻☺

Thanks for your sharing meal worm harvest method. Very cost effective and efficient for feeding my wild birds. Yes, it is true the the "west" there is a distaste for entomophagy, however the west does enjoy its taste of Arthropoda e.g. crab, lobster, shrimp. And, it’s this diversity of distinction that the west remains the best. Enjoy your crunchy ladybugs and monkey cerebrum gelato with mosquito fly wing toppings-sounds wonderful and bon appétit.

This just brought back memories of working in a pet store. On Halloween we put a little container of freeze dried mealworms (coated in cheddar powder) inside the tub of live worms. We would reach in and snack on them whenever we had to get bugs for a customer. XD

Okay so it's official. I'm introducing my dad to your channel. He doesn't go on the internet much but I know that he will enjoy your videos when he does. He used to grow mealworms in our bathroom, inside of a similar container. He moved them to the garage because my mom and I were so grossed out by it when we would use the restroom lol. We grow both mealworms and superworms for our reptiles, I think your first batch was actually superworms. They won't pupate unless they're separated into little deli cups by themselves, unlike mealworms which will pupate while they're with others. I've never heard of a chemical being applied to them to stop them from pupating as this could be harmful to your pet. Growing superworms is much the same process and it's very rewarding when you can grow insects for little to no cost. Great video!!

They’re not suoerworms, they’re super meal worms. She is correct though about the hormone. Super meal worms are treated with a hormone that stops them from pupating.

I agree! They're also a super cool and more efficient way to turn grains and less desirable bits of veggies into amino acids/protein and healthy fats that our bodies need. It's much more efficient than feeding that grain and huge amounts of water to larger animals, and I'd say more ethical too. I'm planning to start a setup a little bit bigger than this one and use them in a bunch of my cooking (there are a lot of interesting insect recipes I want to try!) to help save the planet, save some money, and maybe even eat a little healthier! I have so much respect for insects, I'm thinking of even keeping an ant colony soon because they're soooo fascinating and cute, and I could feed them with mealworms (and maybe even eat some of the ants) too!

Yes as Tori said Superworms are a different worm then the mealworms and yes Superworms need to be in separate compartments to pupate. I buy mealworms from the Pet Store and have no problem getting them to pupate. But this video is giving me some points on the drawer thing cause I need to take the next step. LOL! I was raised to put a bay leaf in flour and cornmeal for just that reason, but to be honest, I have no idea if it worked or not... We just never had bugs in the flour and cornmeal, lol. So my in laws have too many pets, parrots and prairie dogs, chameleons and a partridge in a pear tree. So I’ve eaten bugs because I’ve traveled and mealworms have always been yummy to me, so I’m there one day, I “partook” and found myself feeding toasted mealworms to a critter and I’m telling you, I got HOOKED. The in laws can’t get over it years in and every Xmas I get a bag of dry roasted worms and yep, I eat them. Like peanuts and popcorn combined and they snap crackle and pop!! Omg, I would eat a handful right now!! I don’t do it as a party trick, I just like the damn things and I do think they’re a good of the future. Crickets are good too, I prefer them as flour, but whatever, I’m glad you do these series, I want minds open to entomophagy!!

I have not done it but here is what a lot of people are not getting. the population on this planet is exploding and protean is the name of the game it takes 50 gallons of water to produce 1 lb of beef it takes less than a 1/2 cup of water to produce the same amount of protein with mealworms. Superworms - Zophobas morio is a darkling beetle and the larvae are known as superworms in the pet trade. Mealworms -Tenebrio molitor is also a darkling beetle and the larvae are known as mealworms. Size difference: Superworms - 2-2.25 inches or 3.8 - 6.3 cm in length.

I could see this for fishing bait as well. Catch a bluegill/crappie and that'll provide food. But it too convenient to just go buy some for a buck over over the maintenance factor of raising your own.

I had a pet chameleon as a kid (actually it was an anole) and it would only eat live meal worms. They had to be kept in a dormant state in a bag in the refrigerator. My mother thought the brown paper bag had an egg sandwich in it. That was kind of the end of the anole.

Im in the midst of establishing a small colony for my ducks and chickens to snack on through the winter. Im glad I started small, as after a couple weeks of checking on them and switching out their veggies, I realized i already had beetles running around with some rather large mealworms. I sure hope I havent been releasing beetles into my house 😅

I recommend wearing a mask for worm maintenance. Many mealworm keepers develop an allergy to mealworms which can be dangerous.

Many years ago I got mealworms for a dwarf hamster, kept them in a glass jar in the fridge, with oats and a screen lid. They stayed worms for a long long time without ever pupating. So, if you don't plan on breeding them and don't want them to turn into bugs after a few weeks, just keep them at a cool temperature :)

I used to feed 3 to 4 dozen laying hens with cockroaches. I rounded up a coffee can full every day. And it sustained the flock. It was a wonderful bargain for me. An hour's worth of work would make my trailer roach free. And I would get a half dozen eggs daily into the deal.

I have a mealworm setup like this. it is really annoying due to the fact that i am in the uk and have them in my shed. when it is cold so they act slower and don't do much. I often need to remind myself that they are not dead or that I should not constantly disturb them because there is no need for me to. i found that air flow, making sure humidity isn't too high, and making sure the're is not a lot of condensation inside is important. I originally made the set up from food boxes but the bottom one got mouldy quickly and often had water on the sides (probably condensation) so the baby mealworms died off from the mould . I now use a small set of draws which i purchased from a shop near where I live (the draws are similar to in the video but much smaller as i will not be using many mealworms for feeding) which means that air can access the areas easier. instead of mesh I used the wire part from a sieve I got from a pound shop and so it was all quite easy to obtain and build. (I used hot glue to secure the 'mesh' because I already had hot glue and a hot glue gun)

I really didn't expect a Zophobas morio video from this channel, I'll tell you what. This is great, congratulations for bringing this to your large audience. As for your worms, oatmeal is quite expensive (at least around here it is), rabbit feed is a great substrate for them. I'm kinda amazed about your worms turning into coccons in the mid of the oatmeal, I always need to put something in the tank to separate them. Cardboard egg containers work great for this, you can stack them inside the growing tub to make a "condo" for the worms, they'll munch their way in the cardboard egg compartments and find themselves nice and isolated, and this tends to trigger the metamorphosis. Again, thanks for the video and congratulations for your iniciative.

I used to grow these for one of my birds, but had to toss them out because I became really allergic to them. My skin, eyes and throat would react. Wearing gloves, goggles and a mask only helped a little bit in the end. I then read that these are really easy to become allergic to when growing them if you're not careful.

5:19 if you truly only want to sift out the frass, you'll need a much smaller Mesh (1/30), but if you don't care so much a (1/20 Mesh) will work good enough! The one Emmy is using here is like equivalent to window screen and you'll get lots of oat dust and even a lot of your baby mealworms (assuming you haven't already separated them) in your sifted pile!!!

Great video. Instead of oats, is it possible to use scraps like fruit peels, or leaves or other things collected from outside? I'm interested in farming mealworms for a healthy, sustainable food source. But if we have to use a perfectly good food like oats or wheat bran to raise them, it's a negative return. Thanks.

Crickets are delicious!! *Put them in a plastic bag and pop them on the fridge for about 2-3 days. They'll poop everything out and fall asleep(won't die) *wash them in a bowl with water (they'll be asleep and drown in their sleep.) *fry them in oil with chili powder and salt for about 2 minutes. (Till gold and crunchy) Take them out and add lime and hot sauce.🔥😂😅

Very.....interesting Emmy. Certainly wish I had known about this when we had turtles and doves and lizards years ago. Bet my outside birds would be thrilled about now as well. But us? Hahaha. I enjoy watching and learning from YOU but we would have to be STARVING to eat those things knowingly! Lol! Oh my gosh. I hardly even eat meat now..... BTW I saw this ADORABLE fluffy headed blonde like rooster on the DoDo today. So sweet and calm. A lady found him alone on the Appalachian Trail! She took him with her for 40 days or miles of camping. He slept in her tent! When she got home she found a sanctuary for him where he has other fowl and critters to play with. Lovely story! Such a lovely lady and the cutest rooster I have ever seen! We had bantams and ducks and geese and turkeys as kids so I've seen plenty lol! Thank you!🎄🎅🐾💞🐓🍳🐔🐛

When I was a school technician and we had a locust colony. They were kept in a corridor because of humans. developing an allergy. Now that you mentioned the mealworm smell I’m taken back more than 30 years. I can smell them as if it was yesterday

I believe the ones from the pet store are still mealworms, just stunted due to inadequate care + that hormone you mentioned. I’m sure lots of people have said it already, but super worms are a different species. Quite nasty little things - love to bite- but much more resilient than mealworms. I’m not sure if people eat them - off to google!

I saw a video of that used an apple peeler to spin out ribbons of butter squash (or other) which made thin ribbons of vegetable that were more readily consumed and typically were completely eaten and therefore no mold would ever grow. Plus they're eating more.

I have a little mealworm farm too, and I've found out that the pupa does better if you put them in a container (with some holes) with a slightly damp paper towel underneath.

Do the beetles ever scape the top drawer? I’d be a bit scared of them scaping all around my house! 🙊🙊 how do u prevent this? Or are they well behaved? 😁
