Katuk is an easy-going bush native to Southeast Asia. It thrives as a tropical and subtropical plant, but that doesn't mean you can't grow this nutritional powerhouse plant. What do we love about this plant? Baker Creek's Shannie McCabe tells you in this video!

A great perennial plant in subtropics. Easy to reproduce, I have great success putting cuttings direct into the ground. Scientific sources for fresh leaf protein content usually have values in 3-8% range, no where near 50% as mentioned here.

Here in Indonesia we often put this in a soup. It's tasty and hardy. It's also very easy to grow, just break the branch and put it in a well watered soil, just like that. PS : A simple Indonesian recipe for this is to add it in a clear chicken soup together with rice vermicelli and some thinly sliced red chilli 😋 😋😋.

One of the best greens I have tasted. Much more palatable than moringa. Makes a great soup. I live in the tropics and this stuff grows like mad. Full sun. Drought. Whatever. You will have greens forever.

I got a katuk plant this summer and we love it as an addition to salads and soups. I'm growing it outside in a raised bed and hope I can protect it over winter here in El Paso. Trying to get some cuttings started in case it does not make the winter outdoors.

I've been growing it for the last two years and it's gone through three freezing mornings this year with no leaf loss. They are in the shade of my carport and some trees but in the ground. I'm in Panama City Florida so it's usually not cold for long on the coast.

@@RareSeedsBC The article for this link states that the protein content is 6.4g for 100g leaves. So that’s 6.4% protein, not 50%. Even with the water cooked out it still isn’t 50%. Thanks for an excellent video, never heard of this plant and I live in Florida where it should grow well.

Can someone please help? No videos mention this.. If you harvest the Katuk like on this video, do the leaves grow back on that stem? Also, another way of harvesting is removing the first 6 inches of new growth and eating that. Does that new growth resprout from the stem you take it from? Any info on this would be much appreciated, thanks!
@RareSeedsBC
@RareSeedsBC 2 жыл бұрын
when harvesting as shown here, individual leaves wont grow back on those small leaf stems, but whole new leaf stems will come out from growing nodes on the main stems. When harvesting new growth yes they will continue to grow from where you took, so long as you do not harvest too far down and cut into or below growing nodes

Hi mine is dropping lower leaves. Like they don't grow back, just the top leaves. It is in the sun in a screen porch facing south. I thought it was pests, but I could not see any. I have been spraying it with neem oil solution. Do you think it just needs more shade?

That's sad to hear. How are you cooking your moringa? BTW don't pick leaves that are too mature. You have 8 trees, you can pollard them in rotation so you have new branches closer to the ground so it's easier to reach the new leaves on top.

It does look like the papaverine in the plant might make this a useful medicinal herb when used wisely. Vasodilator, lowers blood pressure, increased blood flow, etc. Lung failure when used in excess. This seems to be more highly likely when a raw extract is used as a diet aid.

You’re on to something. Monsanto ?
@MmmDinos
@MmmDinos 3 жыл бұрын
Little late for a reply, but it could be for a variety of reasons. The seed may not grow true to type, has difficult germination rates, or takes a long time to mature. This makes growing from cuttings more sensible. For strawberries, the varieties may not grow true to type and the seeds can take long to establish, so growing from runners is easier.

And post them on here just for you? Lazy, Whiny Ass... You can easily do your own research on Katuk, to get the answers that you want. Common Sense & Effort. Oh, but apparently that's a thing of the past now. Why does everyone seem to want to be spoon-fed everything nowadays? Geez, get off your ass & do a little clicking & research.
