When I replaced 1/4 acre of grass with a garden, I used a sod cutter, flipped the sod upside down so the roots were exposed to the sun for a few weeks, and then built lasagna beds on top of it

I used tires on top of solid plastic.The soil was from an old horse farm. I planted spring summer and now fall crops in the same dirt just adding compost. I used your method for the fish fertilizer and also the banana. Unbelievable results.Thank you so much for sharing your knowledge.

Fava beans are incredible cover crops. I let some form natural barriers and to get a harvest and the rest i chop and drop. One of the highest protein and early yielding legumes.

Gardening the seventh season zone 6B (NJ): planted groundhog radish, buckwheat, oats. and mung bean as cover crop back in August on some raised bads for fall planting of strawberry and garlic. Have a mix of winter rye, forage radish, and two types of clover for the end of season cover. Also, I keep the roots in the ground and bury all the shredded scraps from my plants in the garden beds at the end of season to keep my worms happy. Works for my soil.

Excellent video of each step in the transformation. Lush, productive and healthy. Plentiful harvest. Congratulation to all. We have a small backyard no dig garden and buckets. Landscape is sloped so not interested in expansion. In our mid 70's and garden is keeping us young and healthy and happy.

I'm in a temperate climate (Belgium). Started a new plot on what was previously pasture by first applying a silage tarp during summer to kill off the grass. Two months after that, the sod was tilled into the soil with a two wheel tractor and tarped again so any weeds sprouting would die off. Finally, before applying compost for the no-till beds, the soil was loosened with a broad fork. I sowed fava beans (broad beans) in February in the beds where the warmth loving plants (tomatoes, corn, peppers) will be planted. First time using green manure, so let's see what happens! Great channel!

This spring I started a new garden on land that's been fallow for at least 30 years just by putting down tarp material. Lumber yards receive shipments of wood wrapped in disposable tarps, so I picked up ~30 of them (~5000 sqft) for free. A little pelletized fertilizer using recipe by @LDSprepper in each plant hole... best garden yet. Tarps eliminate +99% of weed pressure. Zone 5B, growing on tarps was perfect for my butternut squash, hubbard squash, spaghetti squash, 3 kinds of pumpkins, yellow and green zucchinis, 4 kinds of sunflowers, 10 kinds of tomatoes, marigolds, MJ, calendula and chamomile. It's full sun, so the nasturtiums didn't do well until mid season when they were shaded by some of the other plants. The zucchinis on tarps were great and I'm proud of them, but the zucchinis in the garden with electroculture lines were ridiculous.

Q: what do you do if you are a home gardener ( most self subsisting now) without digger or tractor. Glad to hear more about virgin soil improvement. My no- dig start up has been very poor this year as you described. Now I need 3 cubic meters of compost each year which is a huge piece of work. Interesting to see new options. That’s right my friend the amount of compost needed is often overlooked and not discussed with the market garden type no till process… literally dump truck loads of compost!… yes you can do this every year if you want to and many people do… but eventually you can and should transition to “real” no till as its better for everything involved

Getting too hard to til now but making compost in bins and use raised beds much more success. Use the pitch fork in the beds to loosen and mix. Quail poop in my compost working better than anything so far. Too broken to be doing squats in the garden now.😂Gotta take it easy with health issues and find things to make things easier on me. Lots of perennial food now near maintenance free like berries, new fruit trees and asparagus and Egyptian walking onions. The Artic kiwi is driving me crazy though. Taking forever to take off. Before it went crazy fast at old house.

well that's TBD based on many factors... the primary is the labor involved with this size of setup... they are a family with 6 young kids and do not have the life hours to spend much time gathering/spreading organic material... then weeding.. etc... this method here they just went out and harvested thats about it!!

I planted sorghum this summer as we had a drought and nothing would grow. It was the best thing I've done for the garden so far! Cut it back three times. The soil is now clumpy and kind of sticky whereas before it was silty sand. I plan to plant oats over the winter and will terminate in March.

Very nice video Nate, Good comparison on different methods depending on your situation. I am personaly not a fan of plastic but my garden is to big to mulch everything. I always hoe out the weeds in an early stage and only pull where tools can't reach. I have it very well under control and I don't spend a lot of time on it. The wheelhoe helps a lot for the larger area's. Timing is important.

Heavy clay soils where I’m at but luckily have access to plenty of manure and leaves. I just tilled everything in but now wishing I would’ve waited until April or so. welcome to the tribe my friend!!... from what you've said its actually probably a good thing you tilled it all in earlier than you would a green manure crop... because leaves will take a while to break down and become plant available so its a good thing you mixed it with manure because it has the nitro the bacteria will need to decompose the leaves.... the green manure method is so high in nitro it only takes a week to start becoming plant available thats why we do it only a couple weeks before planting...

In the past here in Pennsylvania 6b, I have always done a heavy burn of kindling, brush and crops that dried out and were overly fibrous. Having only begun studying Jadam/KNF for 12 months, I have tilled the last 3 years, but going forward, only tilling to de-establish grasses. I'll still be tilling every year though. Why? Because every year, I decide to increase my garden size by 25%. Our 4×4 firepit also acts as a sod processing device, de-establishing the roots of sod and replenishing the soil with CA, MG, and Ph, before being added to the garden.

Lots of plastic barrier widths between crop rows. What issues if instead a living cover of perhaps clovers actually photosynthesing, providing root exudates? Maybe mow it every now and then to keep it from going to seed.

Just wondering. What if you don't have enough leaves? I wonder if you put arborist wood chips that include leaves, twigs, etc would work for a good ground cover over Winter instead of having live roots. The fungus will at least grow and I have mushrooms that come up in the spring in the wood chips as well.

yes that is common practice to kill off the grass... but it requires time and high temps with sun so start much earlier than you would anticipate you'll need the ground ready... I've done it this way with a tarp many times over the years with great success!!

it is very possible my friend yes... give it a go and observe the results... if its truly pest repellent then it will work no matter on the leaves or in the soil... but each pest reacts differently to each JLF so test it out!

several options... yes you can remove the fabric (not the rubber) and either add fertility like manure or plant another clover crop for green manure... or just leave it as is and still it will work really well for another year or two at least so long as you use liquid nutrients such as the fertilizers on this channel

yes you can do it this way and I have done it many times like that... just chop (finely) and let it lay there to decompose and leach into the soil... the IMO's and earthworms love it but you won't get the same "blast" of nutrients you get from tilling it into the soil but yes it still works great and you get the added benefits of the roots and fungal relationships being left undisturbed and thats a major benefit... do it!!

yes water goes through the fabric its woven material also there's lots of groundwater

Itstead of tilling it in i just cover with a tarp. Tilling is just bad period. Tilling destroys the fungi and makes a hard pan at the bottom that makes it very hard for roots to go threw. If you do till it should only be when you first make the growing area

Yep confirmed. Stuff potatoes shallow in the ground they said. It will break up the hard soil, loosen up the grass roots and save me the need to plow they said. So I pierced holes in the ground with a pole iron, stuffed them in and covered them up with a little dirt. They did not even make a plant. - Establishing - a vegetable field without any means of pre tillage is BS I say. Unless... one plant a pioneer crop of dynamites, that would work I´m sure.

IF YOU STILL USING FERTILIZER until TODAY, meaning there is something wrong with THE WAY you DO farming. PLANTS do not need any fertilizer. This is BASIC PRINCIPLE of THE REAL FARMING. You need to LEARN how the plants originally living in their habitats. SETUP the SOIL is more important before doing any farming, let the rain-water, sun, and wind take the rest.

@@CraftAmundous Actually it's a good reminder. My husband when he was 9 years old got run over by his dad on the tractor. Kids will play on machinery they feel comfortable on and my husband was jumping up and down and fell and his dad ran him over. His head and all... severed ear, eye but luckily no brain damage. Every year kids get harmed on farms. About a decade ago or so 3 sisters were buried by silage. I believe the government has farm safety programs in place but it's been a while since I have heard anything about them.

@@CraftAmundous nope! Know of two kids that lost their lives sure to incident involving tractors. And two adult men who did things that they knew not to do. So stuff does happen.

@@healthyfitmom thank you! I was thinking of taking my comment down but now I am glad I did not. It's tragic when a child is hurt like that. And yes the more comfortable we are around the equipment we use, the more lax we become. If it's a boy of thirteen unbalanced and run over by the tractor or a 70 year old experienced man with a front end loader raised going up a embankment and rolling the tractor over himself. All tragic.

@@lpmoron6258 yes.. I've seen an elderly man also roll a tractor on the side of the road into the ditch right infront of my car. It was an old tractor with no top. So he was just sitting in an open seat. So crazy that barely anyone stopped to help this elderly man. These days ppl don't want to get involved. He ended up being ok from what I observed. But you never know what kind of bumps and bruises would show up after the adrenaline faded. 🙏 you can never be to careful. And any reminders are more than welcome. I do this with my own kids till they get sick of hearing it. But you know what? I know they do hear it and it gets imprinted into their subconscious mind even though they roll their eyes at me. It doesn't matter.... They know I love them and care about them. That is where it's coming from.
