There are several reasons to consider one of the new electric pressure canners. Perhaps you have a glass-top stove, and you’re concerned about using a traditional canner on it. Perhaps you have other things going on (work from home, small children, etc) that make multi-tasking a must. Perhaps you simply need a second canner. Or perhaps you just feel more comfortable with a canner that needs less attention. Whatever the reason, an electric canner can be a great choice.
Of the three canners below, I have only used the Presto Precise Electric Canner. However, the others, although smaller, have outstanding reviews as well. I am confident that any of these would be a good choice for either the beginner or the experienced home canner.
If you have experience with any of these, please include your thoughts and experience below to help others decide what may or may not work for them.
Note that these are Amazon Affiliate Links. If you purchase though my link, I may earn a small commission, at no cost to you. Thank you so much for your support.
Presto Precise: amzn.to/3Fmj72h This is the one I have. It holds 5 quart jars, 10 half pint jars, and 8 regular mouth pint jars.
Both Nesco and Carey are owned by The Metal Ware Corporation. These two canners appear to be identical. They use very similar wording in the product descriptions. If you’re interested in one of these two, I would buy whichever is cheaper at the time.
Carey Smart Pressure Canner and Cooker: amzn.to/3VNqLbf At the time of posting, this one is the least expensive. The reviews are great. It holds 4 quart jars, 5 pint jars or 8 half-pints jars.
Nesco NPC-9 Smart Electric Pressure Cooker and Canner: amzn.to/3iA0sXS At the time of posting this, this one is more expensive than the Carey. The reviews are also great. It holds 4 quart jars, 5 pint jars or 8 half pint jars.

Best review of all on this electric canner! You're the first address raw-pack canning, and how you deal with it. Even the Presto official video does not address raw-pack meat, a USDA approved method. Well done!

Is it safe to do that? I'm getting going tomorrow, and I'm a newbie! 🙋🏻‍♀️ don't they need to be sterilized first? I want to can frozen veggies..
@growandpreserve
@growandpreserve Жыл бұрын
It’s perfectly safe. The heat function on the canner is not for sterilization. It is simply to warm the jars and water to the temp of hot food going in them. This keeps the jars from breaking. If you’re putting cold/room temp food in the jars, you want them to be cold to start the process.
@growandpreserve
@growandpreserve Жыл бұрын
One more thing. Your jars should be clean going into the pressure canner, but they will effectively be sterilized in the canning process.

It's an excellent choice for a beginner. My sister-in-law was here back in February, and I was teaching her to can, both with the All American on the stove and with the Presto Electric. She ordered the Presto Electric Canner before she even left here. Since then, she's canned everything she can get her hands on. I think you'll love it!

Sheron, the electric canner has been a great addition for me. A friend was over on Saturday. She brought her All American, so we had 2 going on the stovetop and the Presto Electric on the counter. The weights on the two AAs competed the entire time, but the Presto just did as it was told and then told me when it was finished! Gotta love that! I'm so glad you're enjoying the channel, Sheron. So glad to have the rest of your family with us as well!😇

Ok, Carter, I'll give you my thoughts on the Presto Precise Digital Canner, as you asked. I have mixed emotions regarding this canner. I think you and I bought them about the same time. It holds 5 quarts, or 7 wide mouth pints, or 8 regular mouth pints, or 9 half pints. I tried not taking the regulator off, just moving it to "vent" and it did fine without removing it. I just made sure it was on "can" when I was told to put it on. My CONS: It is HEAVY!! Close to 20 pounds! I wish it was large enough to hold the familiar 7 quarts, but then it would be heavier! I'm not so sure I like the way the gasket is placed in the lid. It is very difficult to check the vent hole, since the inside is covered in a piece of metal with holes in it, and it takes forever to depressurize. Also, the cord is rather short, and it is pricey. My PROS: I like the way it is almost hands free to use. Instructions are easy to read and follow. The water line is very visible in the inner pot. The outside looks of the canner are very pretty, and it's easy clean-up. It absolutely frees up my stove so I can be doing other things. Would I buy this canner again? ABSOLUTELY!! I think that as I use it more, I will like it even more. Thank you for your review.

Thanks so much for adding your input! Interesting about the regulator! That's how I would have expected it to work. It is heavy, but so is my All American. Unfortunately, I have to store both of them in the cabinet over the microwave. I'm counting it as weight lifting! Love having you here, GGMM!

You mentioned the metal piece covering the vent hole. It is removable. All you have to do to remove it is push backwards on it enough to slide a thin knife blade under the edge and twist the blade. It's the same as the one on any Instant Pot.

Help! I (thought I) read the canner instructions for water bath canning tomato salsa. However, I think I left the water level at the mark on the side of the canner & did not add water to the recommended level above the jars. I did this in October 2023 & it's now March 2024. I don't know why I thought about this 5 months later. Should I throw it all out? I will contact Presto as well but wanted to see if any of you have made this mistake as well...thoughts? Thank you all!

This was such a helpful review. I’m new to canning and pressure canning has always intimidated me. We purchased an All American but I haven’t used it once because I’m scared of it and we just moved into a new house with an electric glass top so I can’t even use it. This canner looks like it would fit the bill for our current situation and less intimidating than the All American 😅

I had placed my order for one just hours before watching this, so I jumped to cancel & change directions. I don't think the All American would have harmed my glass electric cooktop, but this will be so much easier for a canning novice, and why take chances? That's excellent, Marty! I think these electric canners are perfect for someone just starting out in canning. So much of the apprehension about the process comes from the shake, rattle and roll of the stovetop canner and the requirement to monitor it's progress throughout. @@growandpreserve The main reason I went with electric, in my research, i found that regular canners are not necessarily good if you have low cabinets or an overhead microwave. So, i dipped my toe in by trying the electric. My breakfast table now houses two canners and a dehydrator....and a thousand jars and a vacuum sealer...my life has been turned upside down!! I have watched your video on planting lettuce three times now....and am going to give that a go as well. Can you share how you have your lights attached in grow area? Extension cords? Electrical needs? Thank you so much! Love your page BTW!
@growandpreserve
@growandpreserve Жыл бұрын
@@martyp7233 🤩You really have gone all in! It's empowering and addictive at the same time, isn't it? Regarding the grow lights, I have them attached to the wire shelf with zip ties. If you have the lights that I have, they daisy chain together for each shelf. Then, I have one cord for each shelf that I plug into an extension cord, then into a "smart" outlet that I put on a timer. I had outlets installed for this, thinking I'd need an addition to the fuse box for all those lights. The electrician just laughed. He said they were really not going to draw anything, so there was no need to add another fuse. Lettuce is so worth growing! I just up-potted mine a couple days ago, and they're all looking good. I have a video coming out Friday on growing sprouts. Super fun as well! So happy to have you here, Marty!

Yes, you can definitely pressure can in pints! I'm sorry their wording is confusing. You can pressure can 8 regular mouth pints (or 7 wide mouth pints) at a time in the Presto Electric Canner. If you also use it as a water bath canner, you can water bath pints or half pints only. The quarts are too tall to fit a couple of inches of water over the top for water bath canning. I use this canner for just most of my pressure canning these days...and 90% of that is in pints.

We have very hard water here, so I have been adding vinegar. We've just added a filtration and softening system, so I don't need to add the vinegar anymore. I did not need it when I lived in Atlanta. Well I like quiet canners too. Nesco / Carey is not. It makes noise like any old fashion stove top canner all the way through. This is more like canning with the Power XL or a Instapot and that is nice. If I'm doing one batch right after another and there's been no siphoning (liquid from the first batch expelled into the canning water), I will just add enough water to get back to the fill line and (if necessary) lower the water temp enough to not shock the new jars going in. Hope that helps, Kim!

Really enjoy your videos! When you swap allulose for sugar, do you just replace in any recipe, or does it need to be a specific recipe calling for allulose?
@growandpreserve
@growandpreserve Жыл бұрын
Thanks so much, Maria! I'm happy to have you here! I tend to choose my recipes based on whether or not I feel I can sub Allulose for some or all of the sugar. If, for instance, a recipe calls for 7 cups of sugar (as many of the Ball recipes do), I will likely skip that recipe altogether because of the cost of 7 cups of allulose. On the other hand, using Pomona's Pectin and the Pomona's canning book, I have replaced allulose for sugar in many of the "reduced sugar" recipes. I have used allulose in all of my pickles, relishes, salsas, jams/preserves/jellies, BBQ sauce, etc. In all, I've had one recipe that didn't have a perfect set, so that's likely a user error. Outside of canning, I use allulose and stevia for everything. Hope that helps! These are the items I use: amzn.to/3VMc7S3 and amzn.to/3uG2dW1 and amzn.to/3FGabon.

You can always pull the plug, if you're completely confident in what you're doing. However, I'm sure you know that any rapid change in pressure between inside the jars and outside the jars may cause a volatile reaction. Just be safe, Beverly! I'd miss you. ;-)
@marli269
@marli269 7 ай бұрын
The kill zone temp needs to be 140 degrees or higher for the specified time. The long cool down time is part of the actual procedure. If you stop it or shorten it, you may not have been in the kill zone long enough and then your food wouldn't be safe.

I bought a Presto electric. It's my first canner and I'm a bit lost. There's no recipes for electric. How do I "convert" USDA canning book recipes from a regular canner to an electric canner?
@growandpreserve
@growandpreserve Жыл бұрын
What an outstanding question! Thank you so much for asking this. I'm sure there are many others wondering the same thing. You don't need to do any "conversion" at all. Everything is exactly the same, except with an electric canner, you don't need to worry about the pounds of pressure or "psi" based on your altitude. Pressure canning recipes will say, "process for XX minutes at 10psi, adjusted for your altitude." The only thing you need to know is the processing time. The electric canners have internal sensors that make the necessary adjustments to psi to reach a safe canning temperature at your altitude. Thank you for being here, Cherished Glory!

I think the Presto electric canner only comes in one size. Don't mistakenly order the electric cooker instead. This canner is the perfect size for a couple. I have been using my electric canner for 2 weeks now. I have had a few seal fails with the 4jars lids. I have used these lids for over a year now with no failures. Wonder if you could give some ideas as to why I'm having trouble. I canned raw packed chicken and sweet potatoes with lid failures THANKS Carter.
@growandpreserve
@growandpreserve 8 ай бұрын
Interesting, Michele. Sometimes seal failures just happen, but it sounds like you’ve had more than your share. Neither raw packed chicken nor sweet potatoes are common seal offenders. If you added salt to the jars, perhaps a grain or two were stuck to the rim and caused the lids not to seal. Perhaps headspace was off a bit. Did you have any siphoning with either batch? I’m just not sure. Let’s keep a close eye on it though.
@michelesalazar2045

Thank you Carter for your input. I'll keep and eye on the head space. The one that failed on the sweet potatoes was a wide mouth. Raw chicken were regular mouth, never have trouble with chicken. Thank you again@@growandpreserve

The Presto canner manual instructions give differing processing times, pints and quarts, then the ball Blue Book and other canning recipes recommend. So which do you use recommended in the manual or the recipe or Blue Book times? I used the X recommended in the manual then was told I needed to reprocess them and use the X for the recipe. Do you have any advice on this or recommendation?
@growandpreserve
@growandpreserve 9 ай бұрын
Interesting, Lori! I have never used a recipe from the canner manual. I pulled it out this morning though to see what it said. Nothing jumped out at me as an incorrect time. What was it you canned that has the disputed processing time? Don't let anyone bully you. Let's just figure out why it's different.

@@growandpreserve The presto manual says soups, chicken and beef 75 minutes. Recipes all say 90 minutes and another canner blogger said I needed to can chicken for 90 minutes.
@growandpreserve
@growandpreserve 9 ай бұрын
Gotcha. The USDA does confuse things with soup. According to the USDA, if you only fill the jar half full with solids and fill the rest with liquid, you can use the lower soup processing times (60 min for pints or 75 min for quarts). I do not do that in this video, because I like my soups full of the "stuff". All beef, chicken and "hearty soups/stews" process for 75 minutes in pints or 90 minutes in quarts. It is totally dependent on the size of the jars, so be sure to check that when recipes or bloggers quote processing times. Just to confuse things more, if there is seafood in the jar, the processing times are longer. @@lorilemmonsharvey3633

@growandpreserve
@growandpreserve 11 ай бұрын
I'm sure a more "science-y" person could explain it better, but here's my understanding. As you know, using the appropriate pressure for your elevation is all about getting the temperature in the canner over 240F (and holding it there) to ensure that botulism spores are killed. While we have to manage the pressure manually on a stovetop canner, the Presto Electric Canner has an internal sensor that monitors temperature and increases pressure as needed to reach a safe canning temp. I have faith in it. It's proven to be quite freeing. Hope you give it a shot, Michele!

Good question, Cristeen! Here's what Presto has to say: "The canner automatically adjusts the pressure so the temperature for processing is always 240°F whether you live at 1,000 or 7,000 feet. With temperature as the controlling parameter, the pressure canning method is not affected by elevation." www.gopresto.com/downloads/canning/Digital_Canner_Facts_and_FAQs_v21c.pdf

Not sure if you will respond to this or not but certainly hoping you do. I purchased this canner after watching your review. I have been wanting one for a very long time. I ran one batch of chicken breast 5 pint jars in it for the first time. After everything was all done vented and cooled. I opened the canner and found all my jars have black rings on them, and the seal was laying adhered to the top of the canner pot. The nonstick coding is what the black rings are all over the canner and the bottom of the pot is pitted Where the tray is to keep the glass jars off the bottom. Just wondering if you have any idea why this is happening? I think you’re podcast is amazing. Watch you all the time.

No, unfortunately it is the weekend and they are only open Monday to Friday. I will be contacting them first thing in the morning. We did not run out of water, the water level was perfect. I thought maybe it was something I did so I ran a second batch and unfortunately it was the same. Black lines around the centre of the jars and the rings were black as well. The seal for the top of the canner was stuck to the removable pot again when I opened it. This time I made sure it was very secure and installed correctly as per manual, but unfortunately, it did not stay where it was suppose to. I will be sending it back first thing tomorrow morning after speaking to Presto, as the removable pots nonstick coating is starting to deliberate. On a different note just wanted to say again how much I enjoy your podcast. I think you do a wonderful job of explaining everything and keeping it very realistic. Take care.

do you need to add a splash of vinegar to water, too ?
@growandpreserve
@growandpreserve 4 ай бұрын
That is dependent on the water where you live. If you have hard water, you will benefit from a splash of white vinegar in the canner water to prevent the white film on the outside of the jars. When I lived in Atlanta, I did not need the vinegar. I moved to Tennessee and needed it badly. Now I have a whole house water filtration/softener in Tennessee, so I no longer need vinegar in the water. Hope that helps!
