FINALLY!!! Garden videos from a person in Ohio! I just recently ran across your channel and have been binge watching several vids for hours at a time. After watching this one on indoor growing, I nearly jumped right in and impulse bought the Optic Gmax and the little mini green house. I thought about it for a couple of days, broke down and ordered all the stuff. Since I waited a couple of days it doesn't count as impulse buying ;-) Keep up the good work, it's great getting advice from someone here that is actually applicable to my zone in SW Ohio. @@GrowfullywithJenna I'm sure I will, the Gmax will be here Weds. Going to use as seed starting to begin with, although I'm a couple of weeks behind for my onions. I am THE worst tomato grower in my area, I swear! I always get tiny black spots on the tomatoes before they ripen (not end rot), it's embarrassing. So this year going to try something different, Campari tomatoes. I'll also have my staple items; peppers, burpless cukes, sugar snaps, potatoes (and green beans if I have room) and then thanks to you, will be trying in carrots, lettuce, radishes and celery. Last year I did 2 baby watermelon starts in a 7 gal container and hung the fruit in melon nets along the top of my fence so will give those a go again. The melon nets work great since you keep them off the ground and opens space for other things. Looking forward to your next vids for more great info and tips.

After around about 3th season agree she's my number 1 Gardener Advisor and believe she's the best for trying to be the best. Hopefully she doesn't burnout we need great teaching. I told lots of people who has any interest in vegetables and flowers outside she's the Teacher and extra benefit is we both in Ohio with clay base soil and she knows how to work it. I'm 71 and improve my skills but she's still better but I'm added cover crops so might equal at least something in my garden this season.

Agreed on that inexpensive greenhous stand. We are on stand #2. Best advice. Put it where you want it and leave it. Those rods disconnect so easily. #2 is now housed inside a 6x9 greenhouse. No wind for the reason you shared.

As someone who screams and runs whenever something moves in my garden, big props to you for your stoicism in finding the snake under your grow lights. I know he is harmless, but I'd have to sleep with one eye open for a while after finding something like that. I honestly needed to rewatch the video as I was so stunned by the size of him, I didn't hear much you said for a minute or two after that. Haha. Unfortunately, I cannot afford real grow lights, and I use cheap 6500K LED lights that are made in China. I am super cautious about them as I don't entirely trust them. So, I make sure everything is dry around them by lining my shelves with cardboard and keep liners under everything. I even turn them off when I'm not home because I worry about them being a possible fire hazard. That being said, they seem to work okay for seed starting, but having nothing to compare them to, it's hard to say that with a lot of affirmation.

He certainly startled me, that's for sure. But we often have rat snakes and garter snakes around the property, so I've grown used to them. I hope you get good results with your lights!

Wonderful video. Last year and continuing this year I start my seeds in my boiler room in the dark. My house is heated via base board hot water and the air temperature in the boiler room is about 78 degess F. The rest of the house is 63 degrees. My Ailsa Craig seeds sprouted in 3 days using seed starting trays and a dome. I quickly placed them under LED tubes that replaced the fluorescent ones. I'm now waiting to give the onions their "haircut" as per your instructions. Very kind Regards. Craig

I have a southern exposure window (Chicago area) and added full spectrum grow lights. I grow sugar snap peas, romaine, celery, broccoli rabe, pac choi, egyptian onions, spinach and basil. I have ten 12 inch pots and use ollas. This is my first year using the ollas and they are great! I bought a thousand more (not kidding 1000!) for my outdoor garden this summer. I cant wait to start my seeds and get growing outside soon!!

I love houseplants! Scindapsus exotica are beautiful and low maintenance, monstera deliciosa, all the Hoya!! Most philodendron are easy. I prefer plants with a dry/wet cycle opposed to those that need frequent waterings. Love your channel!

I like the rack...lol I had a cheap wal mart one back in the day...put seedlings in trays and put them under my kitchen fluorescent lights, just to start seedlings. Cool experiments again J!! I will wait to see your results..I like your style as I said before. Like the rat snake lol..

Out of the wind, mine has held up very well. I never anchored it. It is against the outside wall of the porch. I do wonder about the plastic cover long term. The tomato taste test will be interesting to hear about. My father used to tell me that the quality of soil either helps or hurts tastes. He always used grapes for making wine as an example. I enjoyed your info on inside gardening! LOL! My wife is a serial indoor plant killer. She is great with anything outdoors. I can grow a handful of plants inside, but they end up dying. I actually have had better luck at winter sowing tomatoes, peppers, eggplant, and some herbs. Though I was successful at propagating roses from cuttings a year ago last fall. Hopefully they survived this winter in my wife's raised rose bed. I mulched them pretty heavy. Enjoyed! Take care!

I look forward to your videos in the winter time. They keep me motivated when otherwise I would not get that gardening urge until about the middle of April. 3 things that work well for me indoors are wheat grass so the cats and I get fresh greens every day, aloe...which I use a lot of, and get a Christmas tree freshly cut and get it in the water right away and they will last until late February....for the aromatherapy...the decorations come off after New Year's day, of course. They all do well in low light.

I'm glad to see another veggie enthusiast growing veggies under lights in winter! I'm really interested in that cuc variety. I have grown cucumbers in the basement under fluorescent shop lights - not a great yield but fun. I just completed a swiss chard grow in two 32 quart containers under 2 LED shop lights. Harvested 3.5 lbs of greens in 4 cuttings before I had a fungus gnat explosion and had to terminate the grow. Yes, I know I should have bought the knock out gnats but I thought Spinosad killed fungus gnat larva. Well, apparently it doesn't. Love your videos!

I am in the same area of Ohio, but while I don't try growing new plants in the house during winter, I found that the dwarf lemon tree I have prefers the colder temperature of my utility room with more indirect sunlight to the warmer but less well light kitchen. Bringing it in to keep it warm it would loose all it's leaves then grow them back when taken outdoors, but in the utility room, it keeps them through the winter and flowers sooner when taken out. I'm not sure of the latin names, but most Ivys do well in low light and indoors

@@GrowfullywithJenna Starting Lavender, Lisianthus, Eucalyptus, Cotton, Artichoke, Asparagus, Strawberries and Brassicas atm. Just for starting right now, more edibles later on, experimenting A LOT this summer & the lights are one of those experiments I guess lol. Wasn't sure if they'd be worth the investment but at least someone else is on the same track as me 😅 Will be keeping an eye out to see how they work for you too!

Hi Jenna, great tour. I really like the rat snake. They have personalities like cats. "Leave me alone, can't you tell I'm hunting for lunch." LOL. So far my seed starting greenhouse with the tomatoes is kinda going well. The plants look good and they have tomatoes on them but they are really slowwww to develop. I think I am on a crash course though because I usually start my summer annuals at the end of February and the night time temps to get my tomatoes and peppers to germinate are around 80 to 90 degrees. That might have an adverse affect on the grown tomatoes to see that temp for about 5 days straight for 24 hours. I just have basic LED lights in there so probably could be improved with dedicated frequency of the correct spectrum. But I love what you are doing with the cucumbers. They look excellent. My potato experiment is not going so well. Since we had such a warm January I thought they would be up by now. I have the row covered with left over cotton from the big bales. My sweet onions, green onioins, and garlic look pretty good. The deer finished off my collards, cabbage, and broccoli that were still producing. I hope they are happy despite the fact they get on my nerves really bad. If you run out of room for all your plants you still have your cars. LOL Great video.

I agree with you I prefer natural and organic fertilizers. I used a synthetic fertilizer on my dracena dumb cane plant and the leaves got burned. I’m sticking to organic fertilizers.

Most might be appalled by my houseplant methods, but I have had mot of my house plants for several years now. I have pothos, umbrella plant, another big leaf plant of some sort, and a few air aloes. I water them on average 1 time a month, or when they droop. I don't feed them any ferts, only their own leaves. They thrive and they are all close to 5 years old.

I've used the industrial shelves as as platform for seed starting / growing for years. Same reasons you gave; adjustable, strong and inexpensive. Yes, the basement does present a thermal challenge but I have used reflective foil faced Styrofoam as a means to limit air flow, hold in the heat from my seed staring heat cables and reflect the light back at the plants. New house will not be finished before seed starting time this year, so I plan to borrow space from my son's seed racks.

I have a Hoya Carnosa, it's been in the same pot for over 20 years and doesn't need a lot of light. When it blooms I will smell it before I see them.

I'd love to get another hoya. I had one grown from a clipping of my grandmother's plant that was probably older than I was. It was beautiful and bloomed regularly. Sadly, I lost it in the process of moving- it was accidently left out in a freezing vehicle overnight.

Thanks for sharing your indoor grow. I'm lucky to have skylights and large windows upstairs currently used to propagate my concord grape Vines, lemongrass and avocado tree I use LED panels and some T5s on a wire shelf in the basement for seeds, greens and herbs. Right now that's onions, bok choi, cilantro, and others. I have had mice dig up larger seeds in the spring but haven't seen a snake yet 😱

Growing tomatoes indoors for the first time and I am IN LOVE with those little bites on sunshine 😊 I used Neptune’s Harvest until I ran out, and have since been using a diluted Jack’s Bloom Booster because it’s what I had and it doesn’t overdo the nitrogen. They have responded really well and are loaded with fruit. I got a new rack with metal rails and have been using strong magnetic hooks for the lights and it’s going well.

They do not- just look for parthenocarpic cucumber varieties as they don't require pollination to set fruit.

you can purchase t12 led bulbs that work in your fixtures. you are looking for ballast compatible. meaning just change the bulb.

ZZ plant is a known to be easy houseplant that I have grown for many years. Just recently however, I stumbled upon a ZZ variety called ‘Raven’. Very striking, deep burgundy foliage. A little more pricey that the traditional green varieties but I feel is definitely worth it. Thanks for the indoor growing tour. As always, you are full of useful info.

Jenna, great video! Dumbcane is a fun one to grow. I have an east facing window in my Montana home that Orchics seem to love. They just get water once a week (if I remember) and do great in that spot. One has been blooming for nearly 3 years.

So, would I be able to hang it high enough to get the 2'x4' coverage for seed starting and give the seedlings enough light? Would it need to be in a foiled greenhouse? Do I need to be patient and wait till next week? Zone 6 also I have been using fluorescents but can't start to early or my plants get leggy, If I could start earlier, it would be a game changer. I checked for other videos about this light but everyone else seems to be using it for growing weed in there basement !!! According to the vendor specs that light gives 2 x 4' coverage when hung at 24" (without being in a foiled greenhouse). Haha- yes, that light is definitely geared towards weed growers.... I've got a lot to learn before I could do that video!

My grandmother was a young girl and terrified of it, she said that she would see the snake pop out of the eaves to sun itself, and it would frighten her on the way to milk the cows in the evening. She said occasionally it would come downstairs to the cellar during the summer. I assume it was doing the job it was hired for. This was depression Era backwoods Kentucky. To me, this is one of the most fascinating times in US history. 3 out of 4 sets of great grandparents were farmers in Alabama, Georgia, and Kentucky. They all had many children, and weren't really affected by the depression. They had food because they knew how to grow it, they had livestock, & dairy cows, chickens for nutrition. The boys would cut firewood for spending money, and they traded for flour and sugar, it was the only thing they couldn't grow.

I've never even attempted to grow edibles in the house, except, micro greens. THis is so cool!!!! I do well with houseplants, BUT the fungus gnats are my down fall. This last fall I repotted, washed roots, new bag soil, boiling water , and day to cool, then repotted them all. STILL gnats :( I bought some treatment, and it was better this winter. (plus glue butterflies in each pot) I know for starting seeds from now on, I will use a soilless compost that the MIgardener recommended. (because there again, did all the treatments, but still the gnats) Thankfully great plants came from the seedlings, no thanks to all my gnat issues :)

There are a few channels that I subscribe to that just make me smile when I see they have a new one, and you Jenna are one of them. I built a solar panel frame on the south side of my house this winter and it is impacting the light coming in my window that I have successfully started seed in last winter. Right now it just has my onion starts and I must say yours look a LOT better. After watching your videos I feel like I have visited with a friend. I will say this, my ivy looks a lot better than yours. lol I like it for the fact that it helps purify the indoor air. Anyway, it's been a pleasure. Until next video.

@@GrowfullywithJenna keep your ivy out of sunlight, even just light coming in a window and I've found mine likes plenty of water. But I only put water in the tray under it. I use the typical method of lifting the pot to check how light it is. I don't have to water it as often as anything else though.

I might have left the snake if he was doing the pest control. Anyways I do these kinds of shelves and have a mishmash of LEDs and Sunblasters. I wrap the set-up in that emergency blanket material and then place sheets over top of the whole thing as it can be noisy and I don't like to have the lights hurting my eyes.

Yep, Miracle-Gro is a waste. Haven't used it in at least a decade. My favorite is Dyna-Gro Foliage Pro. Right NPK for most purposes, plus an excellent micronutrients profile. That said, I'm about to set up a new Aerogarden Bounty Elite, so I guess I'll technically be using something from MG.

‘Brasil’ philodendron is my absolute favorite houseplant. It is so easy to grow and every leaf has its own unique coloration. It’s a work of art. I bought a small cutting and it’s really taken off. ZZ plant is also totally cool and soooo easy to grow. Water it like once a month 😅 I also get pretty good results with cane begonias. I really love my houseplants 😬

Other ferns are picky and only make it in my bathroom (humidity) but the bird’s nest is easy-care and very pretty too ☺️ I also pick these plants up from the discount rack. So if they don’t work I don’t feel too bad.

My short answer would be my OpticLED Gmax light. But, if you are planning on greens only, I think the Gmax might actually be overkill. For greens, I really like my Fluorowing- but in theory, any full spectrum, 5000-7000K light should work. Corn plants don’t need a lot of light, and the one I’ve got seems to be pretty happy in a west facing window, and stands about four feet tall. I rescued one That stood about six feet, and it spent most of its time in the shade. Very easy to take care of, and they can sit outdoors in filtered sun during the summer. Let me know if you’d like pictures of the corn plant, or others being wintered over.

It depends a lot on where you live (day length) and how much sun you get through the winter. I'd have a hard time growing peppers here (Ohio). But I could grow greens in my south windows starting this time of year, and have good luck with green onions year round in the south window. I've tried to grow lettuce in the south windows with no supplemental lighting or reflector box in December/January and it was weak and lanky due to lack of light.

This video is great! I also started indoor gardening this winter (just to see some green in our 6 months of Canadian winter). I have microgreens (bok choy, pea shoots, and sunflower) growing on a tiny IKEA wire shelf under some T5 LED grow lights. They seem to do fine in the growing stage, but the sunflower seeds have been getting lower germination rates over the course of the winter. I also just started a hydroponic deep water culture system a few days ago, with the seeds started in rockwool before putting them in the cups. Time will tell indeed 😉 Did you turn those flimsy greenhouses into grow tents by adding a reflective cover? What material did you use? Thanks!

haha my wife would kill me if I had grow lights all over the house. I have three in the basement and that's enough to get my seedlings going for the spring. I start brassicas under the grow lights and move out to the greenhouse to start the hardening off process. I keep on fan on them as much as possible which helps a lot with damping off.

Jenna this was great because I'm growing dwarf tomatoes indoors at this time too. QUESTION: I'm seeing flowers and green tomato's but my issue is leaves drying out at the bottom branches. Tomato leaf mold is one of the most common ailments of indoor or greenhouse tomatoes, but I don't think that's what you've got going on. I'd check into over or underwatering first (I tend to underwater towards the end of their life cycle because I forget just how much water those plants suck up and how tiny the pots are!). Nutrient deficiencies could be a potential cause as well.

It depends on the lights, but in general my fluorescent grow lights need to be kept just inches from the tops of the plants. My higher powered LEDS (like the OpticLED and VivoSun lights) should be kept anywhere from 18-32" from the tops of the plants.

At least it was a rat snake, and not the Massassauga rattler the husband-dad of a family out in Ashtabula County dealt with every winter (mice would get in through cracks in the foundation made of boulders and where that food source went the Massassauga's followed. Neither the mice nor the snakes were welcome in the house. Most houseplants (sold as houseplants) are tropical or semi-tropical in origin (or their ancestors are/were) and have low*er* light requirements, coming as they do from rain forest floors and having evolved in dappled light. Yours will adapt to your indoor conditions if you let them remain indoors instead of giving them a big dose of sunnier weather in the spring, summer and early autumn unless you provide them supplemental lighting during the darker, cold months. Most succulents want a lot more direct sun than they can get in houses. Your snake plant (which by the way I'm fairly certain came from a leaf cutting and not original root stock) is an exception to this and as close as you'll come to having an Aspidistra ("Cast Iron Plant"), so beloved by Victorians. It is VERY hard to kill and is very happy indoors. Many people consider it the ideal houseplant, especially for beginning houseplant gardeners. It's undemanding as to light, feed and water, as in "haven't-watered-it-in-a-month-and-than-we-went-on-vacation-for-two-weeks-and-I-forgot-to-water-that-plant-before-we-left-I-expect-it-will-be-dead-when-we-get-home" only it's still living hard to kill, but it *is* very sensitive to over-watering: it comes from an arid part of the world. It wants a pot that is small for the size of the plant (in its native habitat, 12 feet tall, as much as 10 feet wide); don't bother to repot yours into a smaller container, but of course it will eventually need to be repotted into something a little bit larger. When you do repot it (by checking the roots, gently remove the pot and see what the root situation is), remember it's happiest in terra cotta pots---go up only by two inches, btw---and it will appreciate a cactus-growing soil. It will also appreciate some crocking, whether you use shards of old, broken terra cotta pots or marble 'crush' (chunks) usually bought in small packages at comparatively high prices. Usually the indoor gardener appreciates some crocking, too, since this plant can grow quite tall in a relatively small pot which otherwise could tip over very easily. When you water, just water and let the water drain away for about an hour, directly into the sink or some place out of doors, then bring it back to its "home." It's much better not to have a drip tray under this plant. Having said what I've said about this plant not wanting or at least not requiring a lot of light, it's in a room with very dark walls which don't reflect a lot of light, and in a rain forest or a jungle it just isn't that dark except at night. Can you give it a lamp of some kind? Can you move it to a brighter, lighter room in your house? Apropos of nothing, we've been keeping an anemic-looking aloe on the kitchen windowsill and nothing I've tried and no location I've given it has made that plant happy. I bought (from a big box store) another aloe---don't know the specific variety of either---which is in a dimmer corner of the kitchen, sort of slouching on the counter along the same wall the anemic one's window sill is. This morning (Wednesday) I noticed the newer one, which has been lovingly neglected, is looking thirsty, but it's definitely *green.* It defies the "succulents want all the sunlight they can get" rule. And in case you're curious, neither plant is etiolated. Go figure, eh?

One point of clarification, is that you of course don't want to set your plants outside in these winter temperatures just to let water drain out of the pot (and, some houseplants actually do enjoy having damp feet, but desert plants simply don't and it can do them a lot of harm.) One little point of expansion: let your snake plant's soil become very dry before watering it. And an FYI (because I was curious, having mentioned Massassaugas): it used to be that Massassauga rattlers (a.k.a "swamp rattlers") were found only in Ashtabula and Lake Counties if we're talking about them being in Ohio, but according to more recent maps of their distribution are now inhabiting areas in Ohio which include yours, very generally speaking. Their "rattle" is a few loose scales on the top of the head, so you won't hear a warning rattle until the snake strikes although they might---many snakes will do this---vibrate their tails when they're anxious or agitated and against dry, dead leaves or grasses or other plants, it can sound like a regular rattlesnake. Massassaugas aren't terribly aggressive and will leave you alone if you don't mess with them. While their range has increased, their numbers haven't. The bite is said to be very painful although only rarely fatal to a healthy adult human.

I didn’t even know there was a T12 light bulb. I looked them up and they are incandescent and I see the one I looked at was 6500Kelvin. I don’t know how much blue light though. I use a reasonably priced double strip per light LED and am finally successful with leafy greens and had many salads already and I’m thrilled! I would think the incandescent lights would get too hot. I wonder about how to measure the color of light that is given off. How would you know that it’s actually red or blue and not just colored lights? I looked for more blue and some green that is given off by the whitest light for foliage growth and not so much red which is for flowering which I don’t need. I was wondering when you would post as I seen the train wreck there and didn’t know how close you were. Glad to see your still at home.

The T12s I have are fluorescent- they're quite old. A couple folks recommended I switch them out with LEDs which I will probably due once the bulbs start burning out. I'm glad to hear you're having success with your leafy greens! I've found the whole grow light thing a bit frustrating because specs are all over the place and it's hard to nail down what is what. I like that some manufacturers will actually show charts of the wavelengths and relative intensity. The train wreck, fortunately, was nowhere near us.
