Fun fact: Avocado trees grown from seeds do not produce the same type of avacado you buy at the grocery store. Hass avocados are a genetic monoculture, so all hass avocados come from trees grown from the grafted stalks of living hass avocado trees. Because a) it takes like 15 years for a tree planted from seed to fruit, and b) the quality of the fruit is poor compared to the avocados you buy at the store. So basically, it’s most likely not worth your time to grow an avocado tree from seed. But you can buy grafted stalks of living avocado trees that will fruit faster and grow better fruit.
@japan46
@japan46 Жыл бұрын
c) avocados are hermaphrodites that cannot pollinate themselves, therefore after 15 years one plant is useless without another.

Thanks for sharing the info, but just fyi that’s not what monoculture means
@anonymouschicken952
@anonymouschicken952 Жыл бұрын
@@cactusfacemcgillicuddy That’s exactly what a monoculture is. Or at least that’s one example of what a monoculture is. I’m not sure if maybe there’s another usage for the term or something which you learned and I haven’t, but commercial avocados are most definitely a monoculture. And the reason they are a monoculture is specifically because they’re all clones of a single parent, which means they meet the “single organism” criteria in the definition of a monoculture.

Friendly reminder: If you're going to plant avocado, consider the tree is tall, takes like 10 years to give fruit and the roots can move concrete out of place, so keep it in check often. . In our home it grew around 25 ft tall and the roots tend to grow to the sides, wreaking havoc in the house floor.

Fun fact it takes 13 years for an avocado tree to produce fruit from seed. Also there is a 1/10000 chance that the avocado will actually taste nice. Most likely it's gonna be bland and bitter. Edit: alot of people are hating on me for providing factual advice in the realm of biology and gardening. Simply put, some stone fruit seeds such as avocados do not produce a fruit true to the parent plant which means it is very likely that the flesh of the avocado will be dull, earthy, bland and fibourous just like its wild avocado ancestors which were intended for animal rather human consumption. That's why branch cuttings exist, professional avocado growers snip a branch from a good tasting avocado tree and use rooting chemicals to allow the branch to become its own tree, thus producing an identical fruit to the parent plant.

@@Apathymiller haha yeah this applies to most of his videos, his heart is in the right place, but his brain/researching ability is not there. However, his stuff on cloning plants is good information, for things that don't grow well from a seed, just clone from a original plant. No, I did not know that if I grab an avacado, pop out the seed and soak it in a bowl of water for one hour, then take it out and peel off the outer layer, wet a paper towel and squeeze off the excess water, place it on the counter, put the avacado pit on top and roll it up like a ball, then put it in a ziploc bag, zip it locked, place it somewher warm & dark, like above the stove, in a few weeks open it up and check it out, grab 3 toothpicks and place them around the pit, then place over a cup of water, cut off 3 inches when it grows 6 inches long, grab a pot, fill it halfway with soil, gently transfer the avacado plant and then fill up the rest of the pot with soil, I can grow my own food

unfortunately, due to the fact it's very thin, there is a lot of fiber in grass compared to how much actually edible stuff inside the cells are, and since humans cannot break down cellulose back into glucose, it's not a good food.
