I would definitely recommend more wood chips. I put four inch thick layer in an area growing further than the drip line. (Drip line is the outermost point where rain drips from the leaves.) In three seasons we've had our plum, I have doubled the weight in fruit each year. 30 pounds, then, 60, then just under 120 pounds. If not more wood chips, then something that is a better ground cover than grass, so you build the soil biology more and more each year. I grow potatoes, strawberries, melons, and peppers under my trees. Strawberries and potatoes naturally grow on the forest floor, with little to no sun.

Is there a way to make the Plum tree (Bruce) grow taller and a bit more landscape appealing and grow plums on them too?
