If there was one plant I would grow more of, it would be comfrey. In this video I tell you how comfrey is grown and also demonstrate how to use comfrey as a liquid feed and a mulch. i manage an organic farm in byron bay australia and use comfrey all the time for composts, bed creation, feeding to the animals and worms. My boss on the other hand, completely unaware of all the uses it receives treats it like a weed and furiously wants it gone.. needless to say, he doesn't like permaculture people believing they're too idealistic and not business oriented enough. I'm looking forward to one day proving him wrong or one day getting a job (paid position) in permaculture of which I have studied. In the interim I will go on having all my practices bastardized in favor of good business practice. At least we don't use chemicals.

EXCELLENT video, Huw. I keep Comfrey close to every veggie bed I have. Make it easy to use as a mulch or tea. I make sure I freeze 1/2 cup portions that I have put in my food processor. I then use as a poultice throughout the year. I also make an Comfrey oil infusion. Thank you for inspiring others to grow Comfrey.

Been gardening for 65 years and just became aware fo Comfrey’s benefits this year. Lady moved in down the street and has way too much for her liking, so I get it ALL. Just added about five bushels to my newly built compost heap - it’s at least three cubic yards in total. Has hit 160ºF in three days. Start turning it tomorrow! Also found massive pants growing in the ditch adjacent to my property... Green Gold! Love your channel.

Wonderful information and shared to my Aussie page, as my front garden's becoming over shaded by my fruit trees I can now only grow things in my raised beds. The ground around my fruit trees is the perfect place to grow clumps of comfrey . I have an acre that we recently bought to retire on in a few years so I'll be using my current garden to grow stock for the garden on our new property so that when we build I'll have a large portion already established. Sadly where I live now is so shaded buy neighbours large trees I can't grow the fruits and veggies that I'd like to.

I was growing comfrey for the past few years. The delicate flowers are adorable. Though I had success dividing plants for propagation, the last of them died despite regular watering. They could not withstand the hot summer we had last year in Florida. Are those your sheep behind you toward the end? They look quite remarkable on the hillside.

Zerrin Ekinci 800 grams olive oil,large handful fresh comfrey roots,1 teaspoon borax powder,this stops it from going off.Put 1st 2 in a saucepan and heat until you see small bubbles,put aside for 24 hours,then do the same again you need to now mix in 150 grams of bees wax, mix through until melted,then add borax, drain mixture into a large glass bowl,stir well on and off until very cool and you have a smooth mixture,keep stirring otherwise it will be lumpy,a bit time consuming but well worth it.This is marvelous for any kind of bone or muscular pain,if i didn't have this for my back i would be in a wheelchair.Let me know if you have any problems.

How hard is it to get rid of comfrey? If you for example want to move the plants or plant something else in the area it's in.
@penfoldooo2160
@penfoldooo2160 8 жыл бұрын
Once it's established (i.e. has developed deep roots over the course of several years) then it's very hard to kill without chemicals or some serious excavation. That said, cut it off at ground level and then put a 1m diameter black kiddie pool on the spot and fill it with dirt or water to weigh it down... leave it for 3 years and the comfrey will have decayed and died. People who keep changing their minds about where plants should be should not plant comfrey.

@@lurmot Why do you say they don't contain carbon? When they break down, they release carbon as all plants do. All living organisms are carbon based. So, even manure contains carbon. If you were to put anything organic into a gasifier, the end product would be carbon, or charcoal otherwise known as biochar. You can make charcoal from horse manure, and use it to filter water to make it safe for drinking. There is so much carbon in Comfrey, you would be shocked.
@lurmot
@lurmot 3 жыл бұрын
Ah yes well I was probably wrong to say they don't contain ANY carbon but they do have a 10 times as much nitrogen as they do carbon. So it's a negligible quantity.

Hi there Huw, thanks for the reply! As an Englander who lives in Lisbon & has bought a nice plot of land near Sintra in a kind of green belt area & planning to build a houses an orchard, veggies & garden, I’m investigating all sorts of things “garden”, of course I knew about comfrey but it’s always good to learn more. The idea that it can have such deep roots, from where it can bring up so many nutrients, astonished me. It reminded me of a video about dandelions I once saw by a very interesting American man. He encouraged his viewers to let them be as they are a way of rebalancing disturbed ground, have deep roots- not as deep as comfrey- that they will proliferate while the land needs them & then will diminish when their job is done. Plus, if you can readjust your mind, they are very pretty & all parts edible, even to making cordials with their flowers!

i mean... I'd encourage you to not go full on industrial dig up all your land and truck in a few meters of dirt.... So just just add compost. Dig it into the ground a bit. Mulch it. Next year do it again. And so on. Eventually your soil will be close enough to as good as anybody's. That's all forests are. Just more stuff dead on the top layer and recently dead just below that, nobody amends forests and there aren't different constituent elements in their dirt. Just more life, making more life. I mean... Try not to do something that will poison your land but other than that just add dead stuff to be blunt. Leaves, food scraps, anything biological that isn't toxic, invasive etc - having it break down will change the content of your total soil area (both structure and nutrient content) and the more you do it the more you change it, the more good soil you have... And as you're adding it to upper layers you're making the most change to the area in which most of your plants will be sending their roots anyway Either buy compost or look into making it yourself. And mulch. That's like... Almost all there is to it OR just grow plants that _like_ those conditions and grow anything else you simply _want_ to grow in containers, mix some native soil with some compost, grow some stuff in it, when the season is over throw the container soil on your land and start again next year - slowly building your land with compost but still allowing you to grow things you want in the coming season instead of in a few years Your comment is two years old I doubt I've helped xp

Anabel Williams Hi, friend, I know of two places which sell seeds, so check them out. RareSeeds.com / EdenBrothers.com . The Eden Brothers site had some good testimonials, but I have not read testimonials on the Rare Seeds site, so read about them yourself, and make your own decision. The way I understand it, Comfrey grows like a weed!!! Sorry for that very poor-taste-joke, but I could not resist. I'm certain that the stinging nettles will grow like weeds, too. The way I understand it is that you should plant your Comfrey in a container so that it will not overtake your garden. Blessings :-)

Great video. I've recently sourced some comfrey but I don't know if it's bocking 14. Is there a way to distinguish it from other comfrey varieties apart from its inability to self seed? As i don't want to let it self seed to find out its not and its too late to stop it spreading

Huw. I have just obtained 5 comfrey roots. Can I put these into 50/50 compost / soil mix now, in October and get them to grow?? I was considering to put them into pots right now. Thank you.

Dear Huw, Thank you so much. I love all your videos and have learnt tons during the lockdown! Even started a little veggie patch thanks to you. Could you advise on where to buy comfrey in the uk please?

Hi Heidy, Buy roots not plants. Roots about 5cm in size come up very quickly in the right conditions. I saw this ad on Ebay - www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Comfrey-Root-5-x-Cuttings-Bocking-14-3-5cm-Natural-Organic-Fertiliser/184344968441?hash=item2aebd0fcf9:g:rm4AAOSwCJle-PNc I have a small holding and had to dig up part of out comfrey bed for a new shed last autumn. I carefully kept all the roots from the soil (they break very easily), planted them in a neglected pasture and now have a huge new comfrey bed emerging. For a small garden just a few roots would do the trick.

Notice everyone brags about how good comfrey is and yet NO ONE has a decent comparison between comfrey fed plants and a control group?

I planted 1 plant in between my raised beds that are 16" tall and they some how got into 1 of my beds and completely took over the bed. I want to grow this in my big flat garden but how do you keep it from taking over and containing it.

You grow Russian Bocking 14 or 4 and they do not spread from seed only by planting part of the root.

Where is best place to grow comfrey in a garden? NOT near the veggie garden I suppose as it might deplete nutrients which are already needed!! Because of the long tap root, is it best to grow in the ground? Full sun or shady? Thanks in advance....

Comfrey's roots, as he said, grow up to 10 feet deep, so there is no possible way that it would compete with the vegetables for nutrients, as vegetable roots are usually pretty shallow, only a foot deep at most.

Did you say stinging nettles? Are the nettles mainly for the nitrogen?

If any one cant stand the smell of having a comfrey I recently witnessed a meth which did not smell. Comfrey Juice! She placed the comfrey in a container such as a bin with wholes in the bottom with a container to catch the drips. She then placed a weight on top of the comfrey (such as a cinder block) to squeeze out the juice. Seemed pretty cool, a little more work and might be a bit more comfrey hungry but if you have plenty it might be worth trying.

The high nitrogen content is why not to feed it to livestock when it's stressed by low light or drought, as it becomes toxic enough to give animals nitrate poisoning if fed large enough amounts

I thought that anything that was anaerobic and that smelled bad shouldn't go in the soil cause you are breading bad bacteria, I once had a big tub full of weeds left in water for a long time and it stunk so I buried it way down in my soil 40cm and then planted my tomatoes, that year my soil was full of root not nematodes which killed every plant, so I had to replace all my soil
