Thank you for saying that you have only started your garden in July on a couple of occasions. 🙂 I grew up around gardening, but nightshift hospital work kept me from doing much of that, myself. My eldest graduated highschool this year, and I was blessed to get to attend his graduation hundreds of miles away, but it means starting my fist whole-yard garden late in the season. Prayers appreciated 😆 God bless 🙏❤

You can use blue tarp or newspapers under your garden bed to keep the soil from running out the bed. The newspapers help composting the soil when it breaks down. Putting egg shells in the soil helps a lot. Black Kow Manure is a great nutrient for soil. I grew over 12 watermelon from seed in a raise garden using Black Kow. Using a self irrigation system will work great so you do not have to keep watering yourself. Set it and forget it. Look up Kratky Method of growing.

I was losing plants many years ago then I noticed where ever I dug on my property there were the white Grus of different sizes . And I know if you have grubs in your lawn they eat the grass roots and cause brown dead grass . So I got grub killer and started on the garden then the whole lawn . After they I stopped losing plants . So you might wanna try grub killer
@BBettaGarden3 жыл бұрын
I’ll definitely keep this in mind. I dug up the grass in my front yard in 2019 and saw a lot of grubs (my grass was never really that nice) . I see them occasionally in the front yard but not often in the backyard.
@freewaybaby2 жыл бұрын
I didn’t know we had grubs, BUT… within the last month, we’ve had a usurper who comes to eat my feral cats food every night. I thought it was an opossum, but turns out it’s a skunk. I don’t really want a skunk here, but at this point he IS here and digging up grubs everywhere. I know people complain that wildlife tears up their lawn, but I’d rather have those shallow little holes that are gonna fill themselves back in than the grub worms in the soil, so, I’ll be in self-imposed quarantine after dark (when the skunk shows up) as long as the skunk keeps eating those disgusting grubs. AND doesn’t threaten my old ferals. It’s amazing the things we don’t see in our yards!
@mikeclark97312 жыл бұрын
Just wait until you get sprayed walking outside after dark…. 😳🙃 Been there
@freewaybaby2 жыл бұрын
@@mikeclark9731 Well, as I said, I am in self-imposed quarantine after dark. IF I have to go anywhere after dark or come home after dark, I make sure and make noise before showing up in the backyard. AND… I don’t go near the porch/patio where the food is, which includes the garage that houses my workshop and my laundry area, just in case anything wild happens to be out there or in that garage. I have a curtain that hangs across the doorway (the actual door stays open, to give access to the two old feral cats), but believe me… I avoid the possibility at all cost. I really don’t like giving up working on my projects in the garage or in the backyard after my “curfew”. LOL

So you know: "bonny" can mean good, kind, pleasing or agreeable, as well as pretty or (surprise! ) handsome; it can be used as a noun to indicate a female human; and lass can mean a female human of almost any age above that of a toddler (who'd be a "wee lass," unless the speaker intends to convey someone younger/smaller, in which case the wee lass would be a wee lassie; smaller / younger still, a "wee sma' [small] lassie." "Lassie" is the diminutive form and its use indicates affection on the part of the speaker for the person referenced." @@BBettaGarden Lately, I've noticed, as more and more folks discover collards, it has become hard to get seeds for certain varieties of collards; in fact, if you shop in the "correct" stores or with the "correct" online vendors you can't get collard seeds for love nor money, for they're completely sold out. Right now my seed stash has Morris heading collard seeds, but I do so want to try Georgia/Creole collards! And Vates. And others. Have you tried "Champion," derived from Vates? Said to be delicious and more bolt-resistant and more frost-hardy than other varieties. Oh, and I almost forgot, the stash also holds seeds for some collards which grow with a sort of waxy sheen to the leaves, making them very beautiful and, it's said, much more resistant to cabbage worms. Got those just this season, we'll see how they do compared to more usual collards and most importantly how they *taste* next gardening season. Right enough: Ohio's not that far from you. For three of my adult years I lived in the Chicago boonies; what a great city you're in!

Thank you, thank you, thank you for sharing! This info was helpful. As a result of the pandemic I began gardening and growing my own food and I've NEVER been happier. This year I'm looking forward to growing collards, mustards and turnip greens for upcoming Thanksgiving and Christmas meals. I've already grown turnips, beets radishes, etc... now I'll streamline my green growing!!!! 😊 Again, thx for the info! You're appreciated!

Batavia, are you growing carrots and radishes? I've got millions (exaggeration) they're super easy to grow and radishes are great garden repellent.

Thawadah! Gotta clip my damage and cover my greens up.

☺️☺️ and be sure to look real close (under) at the leaves that don’t show signs of damage. The worms may just be setting up camp on them. If there are worms on those, you can handpick and cover.

I just had some sauteed collard greens and huge green onions in an omelette. It was really good! Glad I found your channel. If you have any recipes for greens that would be neat to see. Tfs!.🙌🙂❤ Yeah I have big holes in some leaves. I cut the edge away washed and ate those anyway. Lol Not sure what is eatting it.

Hard to believe it but that Kellogg’s Organic Gardening Soil is now $11.99 a bag. Gardening is getting more expensive, each day!
@BBettaGarden8 ай бұрын
Heya! Everything I've seen in the stores have increased and it's a hard pill to swallow. I should have known when it was $4 that they were getting rid of stock. This video is from 2019 and the next couple of years my stores didn't carry it. Now it's back and last years prices here in Chicago were $9.97 a bag which is still hard to believe (for dirt). :-/ ~B

Mix your own. You can mix regular topsoil, cow manure, and Pete material for about the same price and you get about 4 bags worth.

I am in sub tropical Australia, Brisbane City. I totally agree with using tunnel type cover. We have the same problem with white cabbage butterfly grubs. We also get grasshoppers that love brassica and similar. They have obliterated my plants overnight. It stunned me how they could eat so much overnight. I was using bird netting to cover, but obviously not fine enough for some of the smaller grasshoppers, though it did keep the butterflys off. Now I use row crop cover tunnels similar to that used by commercial operations. It is cheap enough and includes hoops. Collards are brilliant nutritionally though do have high oxalic acid and Vitamin K, so high volumes might be an issue sufferers of gout or those on warfarin meds.

Thank you for such a thoughtful comment! And great nutrition note! I have wanted to try traditional row covers (and still hope to) but the other fabric is so much more accessible for me. I remember thinking the white moth was so pretty (that was before I started growing brassicas :-). I now am keeping an eye out for roly poly's which are drawn to the wood chips in some of my beds. They eat away at the leaves that are coming in contact w/ the soil in my beds.

Hi! I live in Brisbane too! It's sooo hot at the moment. Do you only grow them in winter? Can you also grow potatoes? Total Newbie gardener here. 😁
@helicart2 жыл бұрын
@@Chandrika-22 Hi S. Not as hot as January! And soon to be cooling right off, usually after Easter the temp drops. Now is the best time to get seedlings planted. I haven't grown collard greens in Brisbane, but have similar nutrient dense plants like kale, rocket, mustard greens, sorrel, bok choy, tat soi. If you have never grown vege before, just experiment and talk to some older neighbors or friends. They should be able to help. Bunnings seedlings are ok to get started. I'd recommend them rather than seeds as these can be frustrating to get started, especially if you have weeds competing in the same soil. You generally need a minimum 20-30cm of soil for most leafy vege, so you can do them in planter boxes, milk crates, or similar. It's a good idea to mix 1/4 sand, 1/2 compost, 1/4 soil to get seedlings going. This helps the roots grow quicker without the physical resistance associated with just more clay heavy soils. I recommend you cover your seedlings with mesh as I described above, or use shade cloth especially in the summer. In the winter you still need to protect your plants from possums, birds, grasshoppers, and cabbage butterflys.....and heavy rain and strong winds..... So eventually a small greenhouse is a good idea. Get into it. It's very rewarding and healthy. All the best.

I Love the way explain how you grow your Collard Greens and the type. they're the only ones that I grow, although I've only grew them twice. the first time I grew them was from seed direct sowing and started them late sometime in june or early july and let them stay in the ground until they got hit with the first frost. and man were they good. for the bugs I to kept a cover over them plus I used Diatomaceous Earth to keep the Bugs from eating the leaves. this year I Built Raised Beds and for the vining plants using Cattle Panels. Good Luck this summer I hope you upload some follow up videos.

Hi! Thanks for watching and commenting! In addition to the collards I have under the tulle fabric, I’m growing some collards in a container and only using nasturtiums as a deterrent for the cabbage moth. There has been a little damage but it’s not so bad. P.S. More videos coming real soon!

Thanks for subbing! I just shared this with another gardener and it might help. - My top pest is the cabbage worm so I normally keep the bed covered with tulle fabric but this year the greens outgrew the fabric so I handpicked the worms as I saw them late in the season. I also had a hard time for about a month with white flies and I sprayed with the hose with a high setting and then used a water/dish soap combo to spray them and that seemed to keep them at bay after a few treatments. -
