I grow these here in NSW Australia (subtropical) and they grow like mad and produce tons of cucamelons. If you're into pickling, these things are PERFECT for the job. They make nice little olive-sized pickles that we love.

Thanks for your video! I have about 7 plants just getting going and now I know I'll trim off some of those side shoots. There's no way they will all fit on the trellis. I had a couple of extras that I planted on their own in other areas that had available space to climb (now I'm thinking, "Maybe not ENOUGH space"). It's going to be interesting! Fortunately my grandchildren absolutely love dill pickles and most of our cucamelons will end up pickled. Would be great Christmas gifts for neighbors, too! (zone 5 here - Montana)

@@SoilandMargaritas After thinking more about it I decided to move 4 of my cucamelon plants to grow bags along a fence. It took some untangling but they are handling the move without too much whining. The other two in the garden will go to friends. There's no way I can accommodate this many of the plants if they spread that much. They are so small and whispy but I know now that that is just an illusion to lure us into believing they are weak and innocent. Ha! It's a trap! 😲

The reason why I gave them a big trim was because they were taking over the whole bed from side to side, I had peppers and other things there so that was a way for me to keep them in control, in retrospect I should had provided a taller trellis because they grow like crazy!

Do the marigolds help a lot to repel the insects or do you add any insecticides to your garden it looks amazing
@SoilandMargaritas
@SoilandMargaritas 3 жыл бұрын
Marigold, basil and nasturtiums seem to be the helpers to repel insects, I had them all over my beds in between my veggies last year, no insecticides other than a little bit of neem oil for my zuchinni and melons but I only sprayed twice or so during the season to give them a little bit of help.

@SoilandMargaritas
@SoilandMargaritas 2 жыл бұрын
So, this was my first time growing cucamelons (2020) that year and I started way too early....so the vines were out of control growing like crazy in my warm environment, so I literally cut the vines in half when they were too large to handle and they did fine, I feel like that even pushed the plants to send more side vines. You don't have to do this if your seedlings are doing fine, me pruning the vines was just put of convenience. I did towards the end of the season had to prune the whole plant about a third because it was taking over the whole side of the raised bed, these cucamelons need room to grow for sure. Good luck!

I grew some. But due to our weird weather this year, they have struggled with blossom drop & haven't produced anything so far. They are on their way out, to be honest. Your's look super healthy! Did you make refrigerator pickles & did you like them?
@SoilandMargaritas
@SoilandMargaritas 4 жыл бұрын
I still have not made any fermented pickles, the few real size cucumbers (Don't get me started on that) that I got we used right away, and these cucamelons while they produced A LOT, we never had enough to make anything extra, we eat them fresh from the vine... between me and my kids/husband, we enjoyed them constantly.

These things grow native in my environment but for some reason it took them 6 weeks to even get 2 leaves and they are micro small. They look nothing like yours.
