Today I want to show you how I grow Delicious Blackberries vertically and in containers here in Central Florida Zone 9b and how to keep it healthy all year. I Always let the soil dry out before watering again at least 3/4 of the way down. If using Organic Worm Castings and homemade compost, there is usually very little need for nutrients which I am starting to switch to myself.
Remember to keep an eye out for that video if you want to learn how I make a great organic mix that feeds my plants for at least 2 to 3 months😉
As always, Thank you for watching and Happy planting! I really appreciate every one of you for stopping by and continuing to support me throughout my journey

@StaceyHerewegrowagain

They can withstand quite a bit of cold from my understanding because they actually need a winter dormancy period to thrive and continue to produce blackberries year after yr. I'm just not sure about the exact details but you can do a little research online. I only use trusted sites from universities or nurseries. Best of luck! You'll be so happy when they start to produce. They are soo so good fresh picked off the vine.

What size pot do you use and do store bought crown produce the first year
@StaceyHerewegrowagain
@StaceyHerewegrowagain Жыл бұрын
I use a 12 inch pot for mature plants... I gradually increase the pot size as needed. These plants have really deep root systems so they'll need a big pot once they start getting big and become more established. All the pineapple plants I have were propagated from the tops of pineapples. The very 1st plant I had was bought from home depot in the nursery section. I've propagated them so many times already. Gives me a pineapple and 2 more plants (offshoots) every year! 😁

A quick question if I may... How much sun light do you expose your plan to? also what side this the container you are using?? thank you for posting your video
@StaceyHerewegrowagain
@StaceyHerewegrowagain 4 жыл бұрын
It gets about 8 hours of sun a day, but broken up because I live in Florida and the sun can get really intense in the afternoon, especially during the summer. (It gets the a.m. and p.m. sun.. but gets a break in the afternoon approx. from 1-3). I'm using a regular 6 gallon plastic container. Remember to check out my recent videos if you'd like. I've changed a lot over this past yr and I've been switching to a more organic approach too. All my vegetables are starting to take off including the blackberry bush I trimmed in the beginning of spring. Your very welcome for the video🦋🍃Thank you for stopping by! (We also just bought our first house on a half acre, back in Oct, so we are excited to redo the entire landscape and plant so much all around lol. Have a beautiful day!🍃🦋

How do you keep them from getting eaten by bugs or animals?
@StaceyHerewegrowagain
@StaceyHerewegrowagain Жыл бұрын
If your having a problem with animals. Chicken wire does a good job at keeping them back. Just make it so if fits around/over your berry plants, but removable so you can trim and harvest them. If your having a problem with bugs, I use oganic neem oil for aphids, mealybugs, spidermites, white flies powdery mildew etc.. and I use bt worm and caterpillar killer also known as bt thuricide for caterpillars when I see they are actively feeding. Hope this helps!

I’m a first time grower of Blackberries and I wanted to ask when you buy the plant do you you replant it in a bigger pot of worm casting soil? In need of help
@StaceyHerewegrowagain
@StaceyHerewegrowagain 5 жыл бұрын
Yes, blackberries seem to grow pretty quickly with a big size root system so I usually transplant the first week after taking it home, after I acclimate my plants to their new environment. I add earthworm castings to my containers when I first transplant them and mix it in with a really good potting soil. I notice that my berries like to be in a rich soil with good drainage to prevent root rot from happening in the future. They like to stay consistantly moist too so I water whenever the soil dries out, almost completely to the bottom.
@StaceyHerewegrowagain
@StaceyHerewegrowagain 5 жыл бұрын
Hope that helps! Please let me know if you need anyrhing else. BlackBerries like to have an acidic soil medium to grow in so I would invest in a three way meter that tests moisture, light and acidity levels. I keep my blackberries at a 5.5 to a 6 and they produce like crazy.

@StaceyHerewegrowagain
@StaceyHerewegrowagain 3 жыл бұрын
I'm really sorry about that.. I have my blackberry bushes growing in 5 to 7 gallon containers. They've gotten so big over the yrs. We've had so much to do and catch up on lately, so I apologize for not doing an update and I'll make sure to do one soon! I've changed my methods a little bit, when it comes to the type of nutrients, soil medium and topper I use.. These are extremely heavy feeders and they need different types of nitrogen and nutrients, to grow and flower properly.. (so I've noticed).. I still have the same bushes growing in the same pots. It's definitely time to repot, trim the roots and freshen up the soil again. I'll make sure to post a video on how I do this, now that we're getting close spring. It's the perfect time for this here in Florida. Well, maybe it's a little late 😏.. Thanks for asking about the pot size. Sometimes it's hard to cover everything in a video, so ask away if you need anything. I'd be happy to answer any questions you have 😉 I'm not an expert by any means, but I'd love to help if it's something I have experience with.

Anytime! Lmk if you need anything else. I do things a little differently these days when growing my berries. They are super heavy feeders and like their soil to stay moist. If it dries out too much, it can damage the flowers and fruit production.

What was the "feeding system" you mentioned? Do you have a link?
@StaceyHerewegrowagain
@StaceyHerewegrowagain 4 жыл бұрын
I believe I was talking about my dyna-gro nutrients, but I recently switched to gardening organically. I still use that system at times when I need to give my plants a nice boost, (but not much anymore). Now, I just add a lot if organic materials to the soil medium like, soil acidifier (to keep the ph acidic) blood meal, earthworm castings, a little bit of homemade compost and some fresh potting soil.. I feed once every 2 weeks with my fish fertilizer and I add nature's organics granual fertilizer.. only during the flowering stage.

How long will you leave the plant in that size pot??
@StaceyHerewegrowagain
@StaceyHerewegrowagain 5 жыл бұрын
As long as I transplant before it becomes root Bound, usually a year or 2(before next spring I'll usually take out a few top layers of soil and replenish it with added worm castings, or transplant if I see it's becoming too root Bound. In a pot size like this, since I already transplanted this spring, I'll probably leave it for another year. That will probably vary on how fast it will grow 😉 so give or take a few months

I feel like plants do a lot better if you stick to the size they need. Try not to put a small plant in such a big pot because it can sometimes get lost (in my past experience). Transplant when needed which is usually every few months, depending on how fast it is growing. The blackberry plant I have in the bigger pot, can stay in there until next spring and then I'll have to refresh the soil or maybe go a pot size up, depending how big it gets. If you're not sure you can always go an extra size up and you should be fine😉
