Thank you very much, Andy. I just got a hazelnut tree; I can't wait to see the leaves in August.

Good luck, and I hope your trees thrive. They are beautiful trees. Right now, mine are shedding leaves and getting ready for winter. Do you have a pollinator (2nd variety) for better nut production?

Interesting. I grew up in Oregon and only ever called them filberts.

I planted hundreds of seeds a few weeks ago. Hopefully, we'll have a couple of hazel trees this autumn. I love hazelnuts! Thanks for sharing your video.

Wow...how many trees are you hoping to plant? They seem to grow all over my yard as I feel like a "weed" 20-25 each year from the squirrels burying them.

@backyardadventureswithandy I will be planting some in our garden, but most of them are for the small nursery I am trying to establish. I planted about 2500 hazelnuts. I don't know how many will actually make it because some are planted in air prune boxes, others directly in the ground. Many of the ones planted directly in the ground have already been stolen by creatures. Hopefully, this autumn I'll afford to build more air prune boxes. This season I did what I could. I think it's very important to have nurseries in the local community. For our garden, the plan is to purchase a few cultivated hazelnut trees as well (named cobnuts here). Those give much larger nuts. But they are also much more expensive than planting seeds. Planting from seeds is likely to get smaller nuts, but the diversity is important because each seed is a new kind of hazel tree, so the potential is huge. I filmed some video of the air prune boxes, if you want to see exactly what I mean. As mentioned, I wasn't able to do exactly what I wanted because I can't afford that atm, but in time hopefully I will make lots and grow many more. It's so rewarding to see trees grow. Hazel is good for coppicing, not just for the nuts. It's also such a beautiful tree, very good for making wind barriers and all sorts of stuff.

@@Crina-LudmilaCristeaAuthor I hope those nuts grow and your future has some wonderful results with those trees. I my area of the NW Unites States, I don't hear a lot of people planting or having nut trees, but they sure are beautiful trees and have so many wonderful features for people and nature. I am curious, too, how the new species of nuts will turn out as the seeds grow. I know a bit more about apple and berries, so I figure the science has some similarities. Anyway, enjoy the adventures and I hope your airbox holds up and has high yields of "fruit."

@backyardadventureswithandy Thanks! I have a few planted in pots as well, and I keep them on the kitchen window sill. Everytime I look at them, growing, they bring a smile. Best wishes to you as well!

I’m wondering if volunteer hazelnut trees that pop up in my yard can or will produce nuts if I let them grow?

Hi Andy... Thank you for posting this video. I was wondering how you handle the squirrels. You should know (and maybe make a video about this) that Hazel Nut Trees are now commercially viable in places like NJ, Pa and NY and probably more places. What happened is, over the past 30 years, schools like Rutgers, have developed strains of hazelnuts that produce huge amounts of nuts per tree and can withstand the local blights particular to that area of the university. For example, Professor Molnar at Rutgers developed blight resistant hazel nut strains that cross breed with one another that work great in NJ. Another example of what I am saying... The Jefferson Hazelnut was developed in Oregan and it is blight resistant. The only problem is that in NJ, after about a decade or so, most Jefferson Hazelnuts get damaged or killed by blight in NJ. There are different local blights that attack hazelnuts depending on the area of the country. Around 2019/2020, Professor Molnar created a small scale commercial hazelnut farm that provides hazelnuts for local chocolate companies. He did this to demonstrate to local farmers the viability of investing in and growing hazelnuts. Around 2020/2021, farmers in NJ started buying into this and this year and next year, those trees will start producing noticeable amounts of nuts on the commercial market. By 2030, I would imagine the price of hazelnuts in the USA is going to be coming down as the supply increases. Just sharing this info as I thought you would be interested. Thanks for posting this video. I planted my hazelnuts a few years ago and they are still small. They are from the Rutgers developed strains (Middlesex, Raritan and Somerset varities plus I have an older Jefferson that is still kicking). I have been pruning them to keep them small but this year looks like the first year they will be producing nuts. We shall see if the squirrels win or lose the war.

This is very interesting and I will have to read up on this more. I grew up with my parents always having filberts at Christmas, and I love roasting them! The biggest issue right now with my home harvest is that the squirrels and Steller jays get thousands of them. I use a live-trap for the squirrels (and rabbits) now, and I made a video you might find insightful about how my trap works: kzbin.info/www/bejne/g5zKqoGbo7GXY5I. Thanks for sharing and for your comments. I am learning so much in this process!

@@backyardadventureswithandy I was told that the commercial farmers here are planting their trees in fields far enough away from the surrounding tree line so that the squirrels will be afraid to try to get to the hazelnuts. Where there is open land, squirrels can easily get picked off by a preying bird. With that said, I suspect there are probably powerful BB guns and traps being used as well because commercial farmers (their livelihood is from the hazelnuts) are going to care about the squirrels about as much as a freight train barreling down the tracks does. Also possibly worth mentioning in a follow video (if that was not already mentioned here) is the need to plant multiple compatible hazelnut trees in order to get nuts. If someone just buys a single hazelnut tree and there are no other compatible ones nearby, they will not get nuts, which would drive me nuts.

How long before they first start producing nuts.?

For me, it was 2 or 3 years. I have a start that is two or three years old, and I think I see a nut growing, though.

That is correct, as there are different varieties. I have three in my yard, and they help with pollination.
