I think I remember hearing from a geneticist that the case of the extra chromosome is a neat mutation where part of one chromosome was broken into 2 chromosomes, so though it has an extra chromosome, they still have basically the same genetic code of other grapes.

How are your grapes doing now? I just picked up 6 Victoria Red Grapevines at HEB. There is not a lot of info on them out there but it will be interesting to see how the do here in San Antonio.

Lots of options in San Antonio area. Grapes growing at wineries in the area can be a guide and there is a group of grape growers there. Your comment is from 4 years ago so you have probably figured it all out by now.

Concorde are tough. I have heirloom ones from my grandfathers in my garden way up here. That's too bad you had to get rid of some my friend !

There are many components to how to grow grapes in backyard. One resource I found which successfully combines these is the Grape grower folio (google it if you're interested) it's the most useful resource i've heard of. Check out the interesting info.

I live in a subtropical country in the Persian gulf called Bahrain and it is very hot area like Southern United states... Can I benefit from those grape vines too ?

Thanks for the video. One thing, tho--I thought Victoria Red is a cross, not engineered. Hand crossing and planting seed is not engineered. It came from Arkansas breeding programs, not Texas. It has an Arizona wild grape on one side for it's PD resistance. Please look it up, and tell us what you find. Hearsay is not the best source of info. Thanks. R

Jeff Bernhard weird question, is there any chance you could sell me 2 gallon size bags of grape leaves? I'm somewhat desperate and I know it may cost a bit please let me know and I'll give you my email. a smaller amount would work as well it would buy me time to find more.

I moved to Florida from the Temecula CA wine country. They had an infestation of Pierce disease. They imported a tiny wasp that is a natural predator to the Sharpshooter. The disease problem was dramatically reduced within two years of the wasp introduction. Has this been tried in the south?

I am not sure, but we have them all over the place. It would be hard to wipe them out of FL and TX

do you have any tips how to care for grape vines in the winter ?
@executivegardener
@executivegardener 10 жыл бұрын
An, most of the focus in winter should be preparing the pruning of the right vines for max growth. All grapes will go dormant for winter.

@@lindaamelung145 mustang grapes grow a little farther South and West of the wild muscadines in Texas. They are extremely acid but make really good jam and fair wine. Wine must be diluted and a lot of sugar added. Alternately, mulberries or table grapes can be added for a less acid, more fruity wine. Mustang grapes have male and female vines.

Concord seedless is not related to Concord. It's just a similar lubrusca hybrid that what seedless so they gave it the popular name. I don't know about Concord seedless but Concord will not survive in the south. It holds up a little better than some others due to better disease resistance but is not pierce resistant. Conquistador is a concord hybrid that will survive the south.

Raymond Kidwell - Ray, Thanks for the info. My concord has held up pretty well and has produced every year. I moved most of my vines to PD resistant vines, such as black spanish and blanc du bois. PD is frustrating!
@raymondkidwell7135

Jeff Bernhard Where are you located at? I planted a lot of different varieties in south florida and didn't care for them or spray them or anything just to see how they would do. The biggest issue I noticed was a lot grapes will stop growing at high temperatures and also fungus. Concord lasted for several years but didn't grow much due to the abuse, but pierce disease will kill it eventually. Blanc du bois is pretty weak as well and requires spraying. Concord really doesn't need any spraying but it ripens unevenly in the heat, has pierce disease issues and some slight issues with slowing down in 98 degree heat. I know they have planted concord in florida in the past and pierce disease killed them but maybe further north it would survive I don't know how far south it can successfully grow, but they usually don't grow it in hot areas because of uneven ripening of the berries, which is also an issue with conquistador. They bred a seedling of concord called sunbelt which is not pierce resistant but ripens evenly and does better in the heat than concord but other wise pretty similar grape. Then champanel is probably the closest thing to concord for the south and will grow like a weed if you let it.
@raymondkidwell7135
@raymondkidwell7135 10 жыл бұрын
Raymond Kidwell I mean champanel will ripen evenly and grow without spraying and is like concord. Conquistador is similar to concord and maybe slightly better flavor and better for wine, but ripens unevenly like concord. They both are pierce resistant. Conquistador is 50% concord and champanel's parent was a concord seedling.
