I imagine pears would do really well for you there. Your weather is near ideal for pears!

Sounds like autumn is coming! I harvested my first yellow watermelons which are small but really sweet and tasty... 🙂 And grapes outside are just getting ripe.

Well, a bird got in one of my Waddell Pears so I tried ripening on the counter too for a week and a half and definitely wasn't ready to harvest in September. One left and hopefully it'll be ready in November or December as per Reid's suggestion.

We figure we'll try one/month until we get it right, but I assume Reid has it down!

You will notice the regular pear will ripen along with apples, when the seed is starting to turn yellow from white, they will store, and ripen when the gasses are present. Asian pears see a bit less friendly to off tree ripen.

I get the feeling we're about there on the pears, we'll know for sure when we try these later today. The Asian pears definitely seem to be better right off the tree.

Puddy cat alert! Puddy cat alert! Call Tweety! (yes, I do have grandkids :) Pears are, I confess my favorite fruit. Sh! do not pass that on! If those old duffers back in the hills find out it's not apples, I'm doomed! But, we used to can bushels of Bartlett. Kiefer went to the crusher for cider. Uncle Dimey took his own, of course, for other things, like that special product Mom ignored. I think she would dry the seikel pears to candy, like they needed any more sugar, wow! niio, kids, I loved this one.

What is your favorite tasting pear for desert climate (we are 9b hot 100-110 summers and Jan nights can get down to 32-38 for a few hours but winter days are still above 50 usually and by March we are already up to 80. We do get chill hours in Jan.

If you're looking for a traditional, European type pear the Seckel is a great option. They are a little smaller, but they have set and ripened fruit for us well and they taste good.

Can you grow blueberries in desert heat (95-110 all summer late July to Aug) with most of the year above 80 but chilly winter nights, Jn can get down to 32-36 for a few hrs but winter days are above 50). My husband wants blueberries but nit sure if they can handle the heat. I think we are gonna try a pear tree or a peach.

The trick with blueberries is not as much the climate (your temps are fine with a bit of chill hours that they need), rather it's the soil PH that is the most critical. Blueberries need VERY acidic soil in order to grow. Even alkaline water can be an issue for them. If you have alkaline soil you'll need to grow them in a container.

my monterey pear tree is still really small even after a few years, it set fruit for the first time this year (only 3 lol) but they all turned black and fell off a few weeks later, tree looks good otherwise.

That definitely sounds like some type of stress. If a tree thinks it's not able to support fruit it will stop sending moisture to it, so it can conserve energy. Now, what kind of stress is it, that's hard to say. Is it growing much at all?

@@EdgeofNowhereFarm it grows about 6" per year lol it's a dave wilson, looks super healthy even after these 2 horrible summers; it's about 12 ft from a mature eucalyptus tree that might be stealing water
