You can look up the MSDS and it will give you more information about the chemical composition of it. Manufacturers are required to have that information available to retailers on most chemicals. If they don't have it in a big notebook at Lowe's, you can look it up online.

Yeah I was going to do that and go more in depth about the potassium nitrate I used, but I decided to just kind of focus on the practical chemistry part. It's the stuff I'm best at haha. I had a couple other comments about this video so I may make a follow up soon.

Those salt crystals that appeared at the top should of been removed. Add equal parts of alcohol to water if you want to strain. You can also take the crystals and repeat process for more purification. If you don’t want to let them air dry you can place on a dish and put in a hot water bath 160-180f

you should try to purify sulfur from gardening sulfur. basically since its insoluble in water you can use that to remove most of the impurities (at least the water soluble ones) then disolve and recrystyalize the sulfur with toluene (or mixed xylenes, as theyre easier and cheaper to get) only downside is you have to get the solution pretty toasty, and its basically like boiling a cup of gasoline. also depending on how you recrystilyze it it can form diferent crystal structures

I love this idea. That sounds like a perfect video subject seeing as how I can't find pure sulfur available anywhere locally. I think a trip to the hardware store after work tomorrow is due (;

@@randomergy683 yeah, although you might need to get a decent ammount of the gardening stuff as ive only found it in like 100 gram containers. aslo carbon disulfide works best to disolve the sulfur but its very very flamable and also pretty toxic.

@@enamelbucket2081 yeah I'd go with the the hardware store xykene method in a paint can, just easier, but the problem after that is what to do with the left over sulphur contaminted xylene.

Take those broken crystals and wash them real good with distilled water. Then use that to grow your crystals, just add as much water as it will take after weighing the crystals. Those crystals are pure potassium nitrate, or as close to 100% you can get. You would have much nicer crystals. Also use something that's smaller on the bottom than the top and they will come out in one piece if you're careful with them. Heat it up until the crystals dissolve and then filter them while pouring in the growing container.

I was just happy that they turned out the way they did haha. I was surprised it worked this well. But yeah, now that I have this video out I think I'm going to revisit it and do exactly what you just said. I want to see how big these can get if you're going for absolute largest size possible.

That crust on the bottom.... Magnetic stirrer! Ur hot plate ... 125°c transferring heat upwards to solution until u reach boiling 100°c) but meanwhile the undissolved sludge on bottom turns into a cookie before any disolving happens . Toodaloo

I do have a magnetic stirrer. The large cake of potassium nitrate which formed doesn't have much to do with temperature. It's a few other issues. It had a lot of impurities I didnt bother filtering out because I mostly want to see what would happen with this crude method. It was also a fairly concentrated solution and is really easy to accumulate a large chunk of solid material at the bottom because of that. I also think the container I let them grow in wasn't tall and thin enough. If I were to try this again I'd definitely filter things, make a less saturated solution, and allow the crystals to form from water evaporation and not temperature solubility differential, and probably use a taller, thinner container; maybe even a graduated cylinder.

Did he just say 250g of Potassium Nitrate would dissolve in 1000ml of 100C water, so he was gonna add 500g to 300ml of water so he wouldn't have a super saturated solution? Or did I mishear that?
