I planted a mango tree a couple momths ago. It's a very lovely plant. I've noticed it's also that of a "sprinting" grower: it doesn't show signs of new leaf sets for a long time, but then it suddenly grows one in about a week. Lightning fast.

Mango Tree tips: I grow successful mango trees and I suggest the following... 1. I do not use sand as soil. I use a mixture of potting soil and bark chunks for aridity. In fact, I have never been successful using sand! Sand condenses/compresses and kills roots. Maybe in nature they do ok...don't use sand! 2. When you were re-potting the mango tree, I was screeching while you shoved the sapling into the sand...have you ever rubbed your feet into the sand on the beach? It scrapes your feet and gives you a pedicure! So as you shoved the poor plant into the sand, I bet you tore off any tender remaining roots while you shoved it into the pot! Yikes! 3. Don't use refined table sugar...its natural honey which contains natural antibiotic/anti fungal properties and food properties for the plant. Good luck!

My soil mix for my mangos is about 30% organic potting soil, 20% coco coir, 25% compost (leaves and table scraps), and 5% ground clay pots and 20% native soil which is hard dry sandy clay. It is actually a great soil mixture, and thriving with springtails from the compost. The soil holds water great, so only 1 or 2 watering are needed a week if you get the pot nice and wet. Maybe some light mistings to keep the springtails happy. But I planted a few mango seeds, one I let grow a good size stem in a bag. The others just had long tap roots and developing root balls. When I put them in the soil, they took off immediately, and actually I have seen roots come up and burrow back down, and have seen them swell up about three times the size in diameter. I have had about three sets of leaves come up on all the seeds, now a total of four sets from the one that has sprouted in the bag. But they have grown about four inches tall in less than a month in the ground. I think the compost and small ecosystem is helping them along greatly. The roots are shooting through the soil and growing deep, my pots are just clear hard plastic so I can see them go down along the sides, and they went from the top few inches of soil down about 6 inches now in the deepest two pots and the third is more developing along the top but that ones roots were more tangled to begin with, they’re the ones that keep poking up and reorienting themselves. It’s wild to see, but I may say throw in some organic material in your soil and you’ll see them take off, with no periods of stasis. My next experiment with my next three seeds will have some loaded biochar in the soil. One of my compost bins has some activated charcoal soaking up microbes getting ready to give it all back to my plants. Happy growing

The new growth is really nice! I am loving how it split into 3 branches, I am sure it will look much nicer when it grows bigger than if it was just 1 stem. I think the abundance of air in the new soil mixture really helped the plant to grow its roots back. My plant is having a similar issue as yours had, so it was interesting to see how yours got through it. Although mine stopped growing after the second set of leaves emerged, most likely due to combination of not well draining soil and those small almost transparent worms. I changed the soil and threw away the rotting remainder of the seed full of larvae, hoping for the eaten/rotten roots to regenerate. The remaining leaves started dying after several weeks, so I checked on the roots again and found something similar as you did - a tap root with basically no side roots. I tried replanting it one last time to a soil with much more sand in it and I put a plastic bag over the top so the leaves are in moist air. It's been a few months now since then and the plant hasn't died yet, I can even see a new green emerging from the dried out top. I am not 100% sure if the plant will make it, but there is a chance. Even if it doesn't, I started growing 2 new plants in the meantime, so unless they go the same way, I should have at least 1 plant in the end.

Sounds like your seedling was growing in potting mix or something like compost with fungus gnat larvae infesting the mix. Try pure sand if it doesn't show signs of growth.
@Pepso8P4 жыл бұрын
@@TheMelvinWei I always mix garden soil with compost and sand and have good results with most of my plants, but the risk is that every now and then fungus gnats show up and cause problems. I just got unlucky with the "season of fungus gnats". I can see the positives of growing in almost pure sand, but I prefer compost as it has got nutrients in it. The sand mixture need fertilizer from the very start, which I prefer not to use too much.

My mango plant went through the same phase, I think when it stopped growing, it was due to the low temperatures and since I live in Moreno Valley, it gets pretty cool over there during the nights in winter (around the mid 30s). After that, the main stem died so growth stopped for a while. After that, I didn't see any growth for a couple of months until exactly three stems started to grow from it. I also noticed the same brown spots on the leaves, I think it's from a lack of sunlight which makes the leaves die. Overall great series, my mango plant is a year and a half old and it's doing great!

I live in Melbourne, freezing nonstop rain in winter or hot and dry in summer, totally opposite to tropical. Last 12 months, I have spent plenty of weekend time trying to grow mango from cuttings (almost 50 cuttings), sadly they all failed to root. Now trying to grow mango tree from seed, planted two seeds in very large pot (20 Litres Pot) (just in case one does not germinate).

Your soil mix makes sense to me. Here in sfl where we grow mangos in ground, our soil is mostly sand. Our leaf tips are almost always brown, but we grow for fruit, not aesthetics, so we dont really care. Maybe you'd have better luck with a palm fertilizer over the miracle grow. Lower N vs other macros? Just an idea. I hope you get fruit!

Hello, I planted a mango tree this year and I have a friend from India who told me that the mango tree is very specific and this tree does not like too much water, it can last a long time without water. I water my mango tree only when I see that the soil is dry and then I water because this tree does not like water and you can destroy your roots if you water them like a normal tree other than that they like warm in room temperatures they grow just fine

I'm growing mangoes in soil. I live in Canada so I can only have them outside in the sun for 5 months. They really are hard to grow but after less than a year one of them is about 4 feet tall. I have them in a grow tent indoors under good grow lights and they are doing very well. I hope to build a greenhouse in my backyard this year. My wife is from Colombia and they grow to 40 feet at least down there. The amount of fruit they produce is unreal.

In cold climate, Mango tree height will be limited. Since for 6 to 8 months in a year it is too cold, hence it will see no growth at all & tree will never grow tall.

Love this series Melvin but I have to say, I understand you not wanting to have organic matter in your pots, but to be honest if you had just a bit in that mineral mix that you have (lets say 10% organic like compost: 20% clay : 70% sand) I believe your plants would be doing better. My 120 days mango (30% perlite and sand : 30% sphagnum moss : 40% compost) looks just like this one you're showing in this video, more than one year apart! I get that with time you say that the decay matter can be a problem, but we both take so much care with our plants that the extra needs wont be an issue considering the health and bigger growth that it causes! Anyways, just a tip for you, I enjoy each and every video you make, Much love from Brazil!

My mango plant lost ten months from that transplant and cutting of the roots. It also got no sun for about 5 months. I don't see how you can compare your mango plant and mine especially since Brazil has a much better climate for growing these trees.
@TheRodrigo09876543214 жыл бұрын
@@TheMelvinWei thats my point! Perhaps that ten months lost you had would not happen if your soil mix had some organic matter on it for the mango to absorv and grow from! As for the climate, I can assure your is just a good for the mango as mine, since I'm the south east from here, pretty much the only diference is the rain frequence, since it rains more often here. Just saying, you should give it a shot, not like the old series where you used only those ready to use potting mix, try your own, with clay, sand and some organic in it! I would love to watch it!

L.E.: I think he still has a lot of clay in the mix, my sand is draining within seconds, maybe takes around 5-7 seconds to drain.

How about using some organic matter like compost
@diavalus4 жыл бұрын
@@elmarsami3997 Organic matter will increase the water holding and then is breaking down into super small particles which will clog your mix, which is a big no-no. Unless you grow mushrooms, don't mix compost with mineral soil. If you really want to use compost, let's say for increasing the nutrients level (which is not very efficient anyway, unless you're growing small plants), put it on top of the soil and replace it every few weeks. But if you want to keep a plant in a pot for long time, mineral soil is the only option because it doesn't break down over time. Anything else which breaks down, like compost, bark and so on, should be placed on top like a mulch. Nature does the same, by the way.
