Whoo-hoo! I just got a truck load of compost, and they use horse manure. It was expensive, but worth it, because they are organic certified. I topped off my raised beds and planted. Looking forward to some rich wonderful fall crops.

I use it fresh - Layers - 1/3 decayed wood I scrounge from the yard, 1/3 fresh horse manure - maybe a few days or less old, 1/3 potting soil that is well drained and slightly woody on top - in planters. And the vegetables are doing fantastic, especially the peppers (all types of varieties). No need to let this stuff sit around. In fact, I have a giant pile of aged horse poop that I wont even touch. If you want vegetables to grow well - try it fresh in a few planters and see. Also, if you leave the planters in a kiddy pool - when you water - all the horse poop tea you can use - no need for bags. - I pour that straight brown water to other plants who look like they need a boost. Nothing is burned, everything is so green it's almost blue. And loads of flowers and fruit. First time trying this - I'm amazed how beautiful the plants are doing. Oh and, I've used miracle grow twice when the plants look like they could use a little blue water which is about every month. I did not use soil amendments either - but a bit of organic dry fertilizer I used twice, as well, about once every month.

Great video on horse manure. We use it in new boxes like you mentioned and also use it as a tea with fish fertilizer added. Just keep in mind that horses are wormed with chemical wormer and can kill off all your wonderful garden worms and you do not want to eat those chemicals. Herbicides are also a common problem. Nothing worse than planting a garden and then finding out that your source used herbicides. It can take years to recover. Thanks again for the great video.

My favorite free score . I have a neighbor with a horse. I mulch my beds with news paper topped with grass clippings , leaf mold , comfrey leaves etc. whatever I can score for free so I don't worry about the seeds. Not sure if I mentioned it , but I teach a class ( for free ) at the library every year based on free local and sustainable methods I love this series . Thanks for getting this out there. I'm working on a 10 dollar garden as a way to get people started growing. It includes sharing seed . I'm sharing some of your seed this year along with seed I've saved myself.

What is your take on pathogens in the manure? I visited a horse farm and they told me I could have all the manure I wanted. Not sure my husband was thrilled when I told him about the 30 - 5 gallon buckets of manure that I brought home today (in his truck), but I plan on doing something wonderful with it in this horrible clay soil. I'm not sure how "fresh" it is, but it varied in texture around the pile.

I was told by the meat department at my local store that when they fabricate fish they just toss the bits in the bin, but if I bring in a sealable container (to stop the fishy smell) they will put those fishbits in it and let me haul it away for free :)

I learned that Native Americans did that when I was in elementary school. I told my mom, and she let me put some fish in the holes with the seeds. Our garden was huge. We did it every year. That was 50 years ago. Still works!

Actually, horse manure does smell pretty good - after it's composted...which is what Mary meant I am sure. My horse produces lots of weed seed free horse manure because he is very old and lives on a pelleted diet...but his manure makes the best fertilizer. I just partially compost it in piles - add water occasionally to the piles (they will emit steam at night)...then I wait about a month or more and then I add it to the garden pots I use to grow veggies - mixed with the native soil. I have to use elevated pots (like old horse watering troughs...when they start to leak) because it's the only effective way to keep gophers out of my veggies. In any case, composted horse manure smells like the earth - Mary is right - it is actually a "good" smell!

I mainly just grow a tomato garden and small at that maybe 10x20 , but the ground has been pretty bad. I found a horse farm near me that has plenty of horse manure and dont mind If I get some . this is the first year Ive access to a supply like this. I just get it in rubber made tubes have a small vehicle. Im hoping this will make a difference this coming season. Im going back over in couple days to get another load and just let it sit on my garden this winter.

Hi Mary. I just found your channel and although this video is a year old, hopefully, you still see this :-) I was given fresh horse manure from a mushroom farm, enough to jam pack 2 raised beds that are 4x16. In one I grew bush beans and bell peppers, in the other I grew squash and lettuce. The bush beans did great, more beans than a small village could eat.. the peppers, not great at all. They are just now beginning to come around.. The bush itself is fantastic but very little or no fruit on the bushes. The lettuce in bed 2 did exceptionally but the squash did not. Lots of green, very little fruit. Hopefully next year it will have sat long enough that the nitrogen isn't so overpowering and I can grow more things in it successfully. I am near Toronto, Zone 5B.

Great video. I have clay soil with decent natural mulch from 40+ oak trees. Just cut the oak trees and I'm planning to use composted horse manure and (gaspower) till the entire area. My friend says that I would still need topsoil to grow veggies but would I if it's aged?

I have been an organic gardener for over 50 years and learn more every year, thank goodness for youtube! We have tons of free horse manure here in central New Hampshire and I have started using it a lot in my compost piles so I'm interested in what you think about the horses diet and if that might make any difference. Hi Mary, Thanks for the informative video. My husband and I have begun a raised bed and in-ground vegetable garden, and are brand new to gardening this year. I have scouring the Internet and can't seem to find an answer to my question. I am hoping that you can help me. We obtained composted horse manure from a friend, an entire truckload full. We were so excited and appreciative. We were told that it was aged from a compost pile that was a few years old, but I think it's the last stuff to be added to the pile. It definitely wasn't "hot composted" because it is full of tiny weed roots. When the compost was delivered 2 weeks ago, these "white roots, with some tiny green tops" weren't in the compost. We also see quite a few worms, the compost is fairly dark, and most of the manure is broken down, but there are still some small nuggets throughout it, but most of it seems broken down. The small nuggets are about 2 inches or so in diameter, and only make up about 5-10% of the overall pile. I do not smell any odour from the pile, even in my hands and just below my nose. My question is this: based upon my description of the compost, how aged do you think it will be. We just filled our brand new, 4' x 10' raised garden bed with it, and I'm not sure we did the right thing. I think our raised garden bed is going to be infested with weeds. Why weren't these weeds there when the compost was brought to us? We also have a large, in ground garden, into which we tilled about 50 of this compost, when it was first delivered 2 weeks ago. The drills for this in-ground garden were just done the other day and there were none of these "weeds- they look like tiny white roots, a couple of inches long, and some have little green tops on them"- in the in-ground garden. Was it because that compost was tilled into the garden? I am a newbie. In my raised bed, we put about 50% horse manure to 50% black earth, and then added some peat moss, pearlite, lime and Epsom salts to have nutrient dense soil. We have 2 more, brand new raised beds and I am nervous to use more of this horse manure in them, because I don't want tonnes of weeds in my raised beds. Any helps/thoughts/advice would be greatly appreciated. Any idea how old this manure probably really is? Are these weeds going to invade my garden? Does the presence of these little, 2-3 inch white roots with green tops mean this is fresh manure? Our friend used the compost from this exact pile last year and never had any weeds in her in-ground garden, but she didn't see the white roots we are seeing in hers, and remember, since it's in a raised bed, we didn't till this in with the soil. I have a lady bringing me 5-10 yds per week of stall sweepings for free. It’s 70% sawdust and hay 30% horse manure. I was going to put down rabbit poop then old moldy hay and top it with that aged horse manure mix, no till. Is this a good idea? Veg garden.

If you aren't worried about being organic, that shouldn't be an issue. Rabbit poop can be used immediately since it isn't "hot" like other manures. Horse poop should be composted or aged before applying
