SUCH a very interesting video. I have the Ampelopsis growing along wires from one veranda post to the next and I love it. I find that the uninteresting flowers brings hordes of bees.

So interesting about virginia creepers - I have Henryana, which was recommended to me as being less invasive than quinquefolia, but I love the idea of quinquefolia going up trees....do I have a tree one could go up....hmmm???
@thehorti-culturalists2 жыл бұрын
Stephen's look fabulous up trees, even up the eucalyptus which sheds its bark so the creeper can never get that clingy!

Good morning Stephen and Matthew: beautiful vines! I have seen the colorful berries while walking in some dry woodlands in Maryland and did not know the name. Now I know. Are these vines leaves edibile? In many cultures we stuff the grape vines with meat or a vegetable mix and they are delicious. Can you do the same with any of the ornamental vines?
@thehorti-culturalists26 күн бұрын
No don't use just any grape vine relative for dolmas just the proper ones. The others may not poison you but won't taste as good. Regards Stephen

I don't know why but I thought the Virginia Creeper and the Boston Ivy were the same plant... Upon inspection, I actually have one of each. I have a very wonky Jacaranda Mimisofolia which I think has grown that way itself to dodge the two different type of Jacaranda that is growing on the neighbours side of the fence. It has beige coloured berries with clusters of lavender and white coloured helicopter small flowers. I think a dangling Virginia Creeper could look nice hanging off of my tree.

Thank you Stephen and Matthew for another terrific episode. I think Boston Ivy may be the solution to moderate the heat on the Western side of my corrugated iron shed. The Western wall is approximately 3m x 12m, would one plant be sufficient or would you recommend planting more? Cheers Gary.
@thehorti-culturalists2 жыл бұрын
One plant would cover it reasonably quickly but more would do it faster. You may need to shade the wall a bit to give the Boston Ivy a start. Regards Stephen

I loved that episode. Thanks guys! Now... I live on the edge of a village in the lower mountains of Crete/ Greece. Either side of my getting wilder by the year garden are neighbour's vegetable gardens. I grow my Virginia creepers in posts as I thought they send underground shoots as far as ten meters away? Am I okay to plonk one in the ground and not worry about it turning up next door?
@thehorti-culturalists2 жыл бұрын
It is more likely to run along the ground rooting as it goes so fairly easy to control with a sharp spade. Regards Stephen

I wish you mention what zone this grow, good video thanks
@thehorti-culturalists2 жыл бұрын
We don't have zoners in Australia so it is a bit difficult to deal with it however the plants in this video are all cold hardy and should grow in most temperate to cold zones but not usually happy in humid tropical zones. Regards Stephen

Thanks for providing this very entertaining and informative channel! I have a question regarding Parthenocissus henryana. I'm trying to coax mine to grow over and cover an old concrete water tank, but it does not seem at all interested in self-clinging, despite being helped along with wooden stakes holding it close to the tank surface. Is it really a tendril climber and therefore, is my hope for a self-clinging P. henryana ill-founded?
@thehorti-culturalists Жыл бұрын
Parthenocissus henryana is only lightly self clinging so perhaps not the best choice. It needs to just lie on the ground and find it’s own way up the tank. a better choice would probably be Boston ivy. Regards Stephen

As long as the tree is fully grown and it’s not allowed to go right out on the limbs where it could course breakage due to weight and exclude sun to the foliage of the tree. Regards Stephen
