I really like your tutorial on, on growing peppers. I start my pepper seeds in yogurt containers ,but any container will do. One thing to remember , either poke holes with a sharp pointed object or if your handy with a drill you can drill three to four holes , on the underside , for drainage. Without the drainage holes you will subject your plants to root rot , " for sure " And a little tip the containers are reusable over and over , saving you money , which could be applied for other items you will need for your garden.

Nice! I started my peppers about a month ago on a heating mat in a spare room & got almost 100% germination within 5 days. Only one seed fizzled after sprouting, so I stuck another seed in that cell. I've now got 5 each(Jalapeño, Serrano, Poblano, Anaheim, Orange Snack), 3rd sets of true leaves on all of them, and they're 4" to 6" tall, almost ready to top them off so they'll bush out. I've only got room for 3 each in my raised beds, so I'll be giving some of these away to family & friends for their gardens. In the meantime I've got some small fans blowing on them from different directions so the stalks are already hardening up for when they get planted outdoors. 😊

Another fantastic video man! I planted some Poblanos, Jalapeños, and Green Bell Peppers late January and I currently have 13 seedlings that are about a few centimeters tall. I also got a few that still have their seed coat still on top, is that normal?
@TheRipeTomatoFarms3 жыл бұрын
Thanks!! Yeah, the seeds coats often stick to one of the leaves, usually the seed leaves. Its no biggie, it'll eventually fall off on its own. The purple stems aren't an issue. Sometimes they will turn purple because of low phosphorus or temps too cold....but some do it just because, LOL. Its fine, don't stress it. :-)

If you took them from a green jalapeno your jalapeno was not ripe and you will most likely not get seedlings.
@marklugo60023 жыл бұрын
If you'd start them out in smaller plug cell you'd get better results. Start out in a 288 plug count, even if you don't have enough to fill it. Contrary to what you said, peppers do not like to have their root system disturbed. While it can be done, multi-seeding is a poor way to do this, especially since you have to physically handle the peppers. (if you smoke you can transmit the tobacco mosaic virus from your hands, or introduce injury to small plants) Every time you disturb your peppers root system, you set them back by weeks. Having grown thousands of acres of peppers, starting them in green houses with all types of varieties, I can tell you that this is sort of stone age information. Don't transplant but once, and that is to the final location. If the roots don't hold the soil together when you transplant, the pepper isn't ready to transplant. If you overgrow the plant, plant up to the crown. But when you transplant like that you loose roots, introduce chances for infection and slow things down.

I would say setting them back weeks is definitely hyperbole. If that were the case, the plants would flag and give indications that they are stressed. Once I replant, new leaves appear with the week and the plant is growing substantially, indicating it is on the right trajectory and not set back at all. Plus being able to replant it deeper, I can use the adventitious roots of the stems to further advance that root system, which wouldn't be possible if I had left the plant alone.

@@TheRipeTomatoFarms Research has proven what I said. I'm basing my comments off of years of commercial pepper growing, starting in green houses and devouring any information regarding pepper research and vegetable research in general. When root hairs are broken, or even slightly disturbed, growth must slow down and plant energy must be devoted to regrowing those roots. New leaves may appear, but the total time it can slow down can slow the plant development by two or three weeks. It is best to seed into a small mult-cell pack and transplant only once after the roots develop enough to hold the ball together. In fact, why be lazy and just sow into a flat like this without sowing into a divided cell pack? You;re going to have to spend ridiculous amounts of time, injure the plant, and slow its overall growth by transplanting and handling the plant anyway. Doing this way also exposes the plant to upper injury as well by handling the plants. You can easily bruise and break the plants. Not only that, you can spread the disease that one pepper plant may have to all the others. There are a number of plant viruses that can be spread from plant to plant by touching it, especially in the young, tender stages. This is a very, very poor way to do this. Sow once into a small cell pak, like a 200 cell pack and be done with it. Then you can transplant without disturbing the roots. These are cheap and reusable. You already are sowing into the flat, sow into the cell pack. Again, to me, this is teaching the WRONG way to do it and well, just wasted content.

Didn't I see in one of your videos that we should soak seeds in hydrogen peroxide ?

Hey Holly, you definitely can. Store bought seeds are usually already treated, so I wouldn't worry about them. If you saved your own though, could help for sure. :-)

@@TheRipeTomatoFarms is it just as good to soak them for three days to ferment instead of peroxide?
@TheRipeTomatoFarms3 жыл бұрын
@@wendyburston3132 Peppers don't need to ferment. Only seeds that live in juicy-type fruits (ie tomatoes) require the fermentation process to break down the seed coats.
