This is technically correct but be careful if you're buying seeds because California poppy is used to refer to a completely different kind of flowering plant that looks similar but is very tiny .

Sheila, you can! and it is pretty easy. Place a packet of poppy seed in a plastic , sealable bag and put into your refrigerator from August 1-November 1. Take the seed out of the refrigerator and plant it in an area where you have prepared the soil by turning and raking it. Broadcast the seed over the area and then rake it into the soil. Water thoroughly and continue to water every couple of days when the soil surface has dried out. You will get poppies and they will bloom, but they probably will not come back so you will have to follow the refrigerator process each year. I would start with Red American Legion or Double Shirley Poppy. Hope this helps.

Hi, a week ago I was looking for Iceland poppies and not finding any good one, I decided to get the poppies that looked almost dead: the leaves were hanging over the pots' edges and most of them were dried out. There were few buds on long stems and couple of green shoots. I watered them with some water we had in our car while bringing them home. To my surprise one of the buds bloomed before we got home. It encouraged me a lot. By the evening the other two bloomed. I watered a lot and left overnight to soak. Next day I cut off all the dead leaves and dead buds, added a bit of pot soil around the flower stem and put them on sunny spot. After a week one of them look very healthy with many green leaves, no buds though, another one had more buds, some show growth, but couple of them seems stopped growing, and leaves after getting green started getting weak. The last one had two buds growing well , but today they are also not as perky as they had been withing a week. Since watering extensively at first night, I sprinkled some water two days ago as the weather was very hot 78-85F. What do you think I should do to get them grow better?

They are at the end of their growing season. The dying out is natural at this time of year. They should completely die back by mid-to-late summer.

Sorry to contradict you but poppies will last 3-4 days in a vase if you sear the ends over a flame. I grow the larger Orientals specificly for cut flowers. Your "red" looks like "Beauty of Livermore" ...a variety that's quite hard to find.

Frances, try planting the seed in November or if you live in Hardiness Zones 8-10, place the seed in the freezer for 10 weeks and then plant. The poppies will only be annuals, but they will be spectacular annuals.

I've heard so much debate about poppy seed germination. The internet is divided on one important aspect. Many claim that some (if not all) varieties of poppy seeds must be cold stratified, either by overwintering in nature, or by placing in fridge or freezer, prior to sowing. Does anyone here have a definitive answer on this?

Poppies need cold in order to germinate well. 8-12 weeks. Please remember you are interacting with Mother Nature. This means that even without cold treatment (vernalization) some seeds may germinate, but for best results cold treat your seeds either in the ground or in your refrigerator. DO NOT PLACE THE SEEDS IN THE FREEZER. Modern freezers are 'frost-free' and this means that your seeds will dehydrate in the freezer.

Christopher, planting poppy seed in August refers to poppies that you want for the following year. The absolute best time to plant poppies is November or December.

You bet they will! Poppies love to be planted in November and December in Indiana. The seed can also be broadcast on top of the snow. The melting snow will carry the seed into the soil to the correct depth. Poppies do much better when planted in November and December. Try it!

Ana, it certainly is not too late to be planting your seeds. In fact, where you live, it is too early. We just had snow today, too. You can plant potatoes, onions, elephant garlic, softneck garlic, shallots, broccoli, Brussels sprouts, turnips now. I would wait until the end of April before planting spinach, Romaine lettuce, kale, beets, cabbage, carrots, radishes, rutabagas, cauliflower, cilantro. I would plant the leaf lettuces, leeks, borage, in mid-May. At the end of May or the first week of June I would plant the tomato, pepper and eggplant seedlings. Around June 10th, and I mean this, June 10th, I would plant your melons, squash, watermelons, zinnias, nasturtiums. Hope this helps.

An Cel, opium poppies are dangerous. The law says you may purchase opium poppy seed, but you cannot plant it. Interesting. The poppy seed we offer is not opium poppy. It is corn poppy, oriental poppy, California poppy. These poppies are not dangerous. Hope this helps.

They are not dangerous to grow ,or plant ,or have in your garden or in your room. It takes a certain time of year to harvest the milk or latex ,and the after that it's a process to make opium out of the gum. Even raw opium isn't that dangerous unless u ingest enough to put you to sleep. But processing the opium gum into morphine takes time and other chemicals. Then to make heroin it takes another process.And if you dont know what your doing you could easily ruin the whole entire harvest and waste your time. And Trust me I'm sure more than one person has tried and screwed it all up trying to make " dangerous " substances out of the poppi. Same thing with a gun. You put it in the wrong hands it could become very dangerous. But unless someone actually picks the thing up and puts a bullet in it even then if its locked in a safe and on safety still not dangerous. It only becomes dangerous when someone wants it to be. Maria, Blue Himalayan poppies are among the hardest of plants to grow and they will not grow in South Florida.

People think of them growing in the middle east, which they do, but they grow on mountains high up. It's very cold for parts of the year. You have to think about this when choosing plants. So yes as she said it will not grow in south Florida. Northern states are the best. I've heard of people growing them in California but it's extremely hard. You could try to grow the California type but they don't look like this frankly

No! Stratification is not useful for breadseed poppies. Just plant on surface of tilled soil in fall or early winter. There is no getting around this. If spring planted the longer photoperiod makes very stunted tiny plants with tiny flowers. The tiny seeds always sprout as long as they are moist and will grow just fine under snow. They can easily survive minus 12 degrees fahrenheit cold. Short days are NECESSARY for healthy seedlings and they suddenly grow large and bloom when days become long in spring and are dead for seed harvest before long days of early summer. They can not grow in long days. They will grow best in tropics where days are always only 12 hours except they must be in a cool climate like high mountain elevations.Honeybees love them and many people eat the young tender leaves for lettuce. Sorry for the long delayed response. November. Many seed types have better germination if they lay dormant throughout the winter months. The belief is that the cold somehow alters the protein structure of the outer coating of the seed enhancing germination and producing a stronger seedling. Interestingly enough, the most rigorous scientific work on this subject was done on grass seed, because grass seed definitely has better germination and healthier germination when planted in the late fall. The scientific work was done in the 1960s and the scientific papers are not available online.

Dustins Momma, in Georgia, you should probably plant poppy seeds in November. What will probably happen with the seeds you planted is that they will come up next spring after they have experienced a full winter.

Nathaniel, do nothing. When the plant has completely died back, you can cut the dead foliage off at the soil level. Before that, remove the seed pods and let the seed dry in an aluminum pie pan. This should take about 2-3 weeks. In November, sprinkle the seed in an area where you would like more poppies. Water the seed into the soil and leave it alone. I never fertilize my poppies, but if you intend to use something like 5-10-10. Hope this helps.

There is nothing wrong with September or October. The objective in planting in August is to give the perennial poppies a start for the following year. They will die back when the frosts come and re-emerge in the spring as very sturdy, young plants which will bloom. Planting these perennial poppies in September or October does not allow enough time for the seeds to germinate and young plants to get a healthy foothold unless the fall season is very long and there are no early frosts. For annual poppies, to get the best germination and strongest plants, it is best to plant the seed in November when the seeds will not germinate until the spring. Poppies love vernalization (cold treatment).

Will my "breadseed" poppies flower? Its mid September in Montana and the first sign of autumn has arrived(chilly mornings). The poppies are in mid to late lettuce stage(started indoor in fabric pots in April or May), but arent showing signs of pods down in the center. They are very healthy and look great(in fact they are the largest healthiest Ive ever grown..8 years in California, just moved to Montana) So what do you think? Will they flower? 130-160 days since seedlings. Seems a little long to not show any signs of pods.

Alex, it seems unlikely they will bloom. If you try these again, plant the seeds outside in late October or early November this year. The harsh winter cold will not hurt the seeds, instead it will enhance germination and plant vigor. The seeds will germinate in the spring. If your soil is very rich, your poppies may spend all of their time making leaves and little or no time making blossoms.

No, no. You can plant some now. We made this video to teach people that they can plant some seeds in late summer and late fall. Sometimes the seeds do better. Where you live in Utah it is still cold enough to plant poppy seeds, but save half the packet and plant them in late August or November. Poppies love exposure to cold.

Kirsten, how fortunate for you. You should plant the poppies immediately and carefully because poppies do not transplant well. Try not to handle them much and gently press the soil around the main stem. Good luck.

Yes, refrigerate the seed during the summer and plant in October. They will bloom, but, most likely, will not re-seed. You will have to repeat the refrigerator process each year.

that is not an iceland poppy it is another Oriental.... and no, those first poppies were not crossed with american legion, that is impossible... those are breadseed poppies they come in all colors, same with oriental..... now iranian poppies or papaver bracteatum... those are a complete mystery to me at the time being. very little info on the web.

Brooke, take heart. You live in a great zone for growing poppies. Plant now, even if you have snow on the ground or your ground is still frozen. Poppy seed LOVES the cold. Plant the seed by sprinkling it over the area where you want poppies. Then cover with a dusting of soil. If your ground has thawed, water the area thoroughly. If you are sprinkling the seed on snow, forget the dusting of soil. As the snow melts it will carry the seed into the soil. Remember that poppies hate being transplanted. Sow the seed where you want the poppies to grow. Do not start indoors. Hope this helps.

Sreek, poppies need a period (at least 3-4 weeks) of cold, very cold (below or near freezing) temperatures. They will sprout once the daytime temps are in the 50s F.
