Hello Olga. I grow many roses, and most in containers because I have shallow soil over ledge. I have successfully overwintered my roses in containers by lining them up angled at 40 degrees towards the south and then covering them with shredded leaves so that the whole pot is covered. I live in coastal Rhode Island where recently the nighttime temps dropped to 6 degrees! All the roses are still alive. By coraling them in the fenced in vegetable garden they look orderly and are actually very beautiful when covered with snow. I really enjoy your videos, especially since most rose video presenters are coming from the UK or the south and west of the U.S. It's nice to have someone who is well based in science, has an average sized garden and is pragmatic. Please keep these coming. Perhaps you could address the pruning of roses in containers for a humid climate. Thank you very much! Victoria V. Wakefield, RI

Another excellent video in every way with lots of great information. Very interesting point on the newspaper vs pebbles for drainage, I had no idea of that. Last year was our first time planting roses in pots. 3 David Austin's Lady Emma Hamilton, bare root, 2 in huge ceramic containers, one in a ceramic container around half the size. I'm only commenting to point out as you rightfully said make sure to find good potting soil meaning without food and feed it yourself. In our small city of Wilmington NC none of the big box stores had potting soil with no food but we found it at an independently owned small garden center. Please pray for us as we get these roses out of the containers and planted in the ground :)

Thank you for your very clear explanations why and why not to do certain things with growing roses in containers---I have containers --big plastic ones with small holes at the bottom then they are right on top of its tray. The pot is not elevated from the tray. Is that okay? Then another question. I have bought in a hurry, the store was closing, and they had these big containers, with thick strong plastic. After I got them out of my car I noticed that they do not have holes at all. They were on sale and not returnable. The pots have double walls. The inner wall has a round drawing about 1 1/2 inches and and if I turn the pot over, there are holes that can be covered by 1 inch round plastic near the wall. and they are about 1 inch deep to the inner bottom. I can make a big hole (1 1/2 inches diameter in the center) and open all those holes at the bottom, would that be enough? I have bought something that I can put over that hole so the soil will not go through, a plastic netting, very thin. Or should I need to drill more than 1 hole, but smaller? Thank you very much for your answer. I live in zone 7A, so we do get snow and sometimes very cold. I just group them together when it is very cold, and cover with a blanket, take the blanket off in the morning----So pebbles on top of the soil in a container is not a good idea? Someone in England put pebbles or rocks on top, so cats of neighbors will not be able to scratch the soil--I do have at least 2 cats from my neighbors who always visit my backyard and do their business-----

Hi Olga, thank you for very thorough coverage of the topic. I leave in NY 7B and this winter we had 12F for a week. I was thinking on planting 3 roses in the same 20"-24" stone or cement composite container and would NOT be able to bring it inside to protect from freeze. Do you think covering container with blankets would protect roots? Also, natural material large containers are so expensive, would you know where stone or cement container could be purchased for reasonable price? Thank you for your lessons and good luck with your new program you are working on.
@OlgaCarmody
@OlgaCarmody Жыл бұрын
Hi there, 12F for a week will damage rose roots in containers. You can try to protect them with blankets and keep them open sheltered conditions. The only way to find out is to try with cold hardy roses. As for containers, no good suggestion here, they are super expensive but not because of manufacturing cost, but shipping. I am planning to do my own containers in the future, maybe this early spring. Good luck and happy gardening!

@@OlgaCarmody Good idea. I’ve seen people protect their hydrangeas by surrounding their pots with chicken wire to hold the leaves. Or maybe line the inside of the rose planter with bubble wrap or a large plastic bag with cuts on the bottom for drainage? You have a great idea on learning how people have successfully protected their roses in containers over the winter. It would apply to hydrangeas as well.

I solve the large container issue by using grow bags. They dry out and drain far faster than normal pots and by keeping them propped up on stilts, it prevents them becoming root-bound with air pruning. Everything that uses them needs a little more watering, but it doesn't hurt the plants.
@OlgaCarmody
@OlgaCarmody Жыл бұрын
Hi Liz, what do you mean by stilts. Sorry, stupid question.
@LantanaLiz
@LantanaLiz Жыл бұрын
@@OlgaCarmody Any type of stand to sit the bags on. In my case, I make a triangle outline with three house bricks so there's a big gap in the middle and set the grow bags on top. This ensures that nothing grows from the bag into the ground and that there's enough air gap for the roots to air prune. I've had success with replanting fig trees in this manner as well, since they don't grow into the bag.
@TDAEON

@LantanaLiz Bricks! What a great idea! I've been putting my grow bags on recycled wood pallets but it's not very attractive and limits placement. Also, I have only used them to grow veggies and never thought about roses in them. I think that will be helpful for my new, young roses until they are big enough to be homed in a decorative large pot. Thank you!!

We live in the Netherlands where summers are not super hot and winters are not too harsh. I have not cared for a potted rose before and I have a few questions. Any advice would be much appreciated. For my container of 40 cm x 40 cm how much water should I use so that the roots get enough water? I am at total loss: should it be a few cups or a few liters? And how often should I water it in a warm season? And the last one: how often and how much water should a potted rose receive if left on the balcony in winter time? Thanks for reading through this and do know that your help is much appreciated.
