Oh my gosh I’m glad I watched your video! I’ve been growing a gardenia from a blossom I rooted - so far so good. Looks very healthy, BUT, between the constant rain we've had lately (the pot is outside on my patio) and the water I’ve been adding when it doesn’t rain, I’m surprised I haven’t killed it yet! Thanks to your video, I’ll cut back on the watering!

Oh no, I had bud drop & brought the plant into house & it got no better. I still have it in a plastic pot & another pot to catch runoff. I think that's part of problem. The only thing left is a micronutrient as I saw on another vid & it was suggested to spray plant rather than water it. I have clay pots fro. Italy & may ring them out. Thanks so much!

Thank you for responding. I went out and bought some "soil Acidifier" and took out some of the top soil and mixed it together. Then put it back in. I didn't have that from the start. Also, I live in Arizona and the sun during the day might be too much. I notice that in the mornings, the plant is lively and the leaves are upright. The nights here are cool and damp which the plant thrives on. So, I'll try to keep it out of the sun when I go to work. Would it be good to spray the plant with water to keep the leaves moist without over watering it?
@gardeningthroughtheseasons
@gardeningthroughtheseasons 10 ай бұрын
Spraying the leaves could help. If it is hot and dry, it will probably need a lot of water and you are not likely to overwater it. I would think summertime would be a bit much in Arizona for Gardenia. I hope it does well for you.

So sorry to hear it’s not doing well. Sometimes newly transplanted plants need more water than normal. If you gently move some of the new soil away from the plant and get down to the roots and the soil is staying moist, the plant doesn’t need additional water. Also, if you followed the fertilizer directions, it probably wasn’t that that is killing it. Although it doesn’t like a lot of fertilizer. In some places it can’t handle full hot sun and is best grown in light shade. But my guess is that the roots developed an infection from transplant shock. Some people like to break up roots while transplanting and the damage makes openings for bacteria and fungus. Don’t give up. If this one dies, try again. With practice you can get it.😀

This was seriously the most informative video I have found thus far and have scoured the internet. I do have a question. I have sprayed mine recently with a mix of gardenia fertilizing solution liquid. And the blooms finally (after months) are popping out! I have a tray of rocks and water underneath for humidity. And mist it often with the fertilizer/water mist… however the leaves are yellowing.. am I overwatering it perhaps? I guess maybe I was too focused on keeping it in a humid environment bc I live in a dry dry climate (my plant is indoors though)
@gardeningthroughtheseasons
@gardeningthroughtheseasons 7 ай бұрын
Thanks so much for the kind compliment. The biggest problem with gardenia by far is its roots. They have to have excellent drainage and an acidic ph. It’s hard to master the watering so that they stay moist enough not to wilt but dry enough not to rot. If it is yellowing it is likely at least one of the following reasons: 1) Root deterioration via overwatering 2) Alkaline soil and or water 3) Root mealybug infestation My hunch is that the roots are rotting from being too wet. It is really difficult to clear up such an infection. You could try growing it dryer. Don’t give up. If this one dies, they are not too expensive to replace and maybe you will have better success in the future. 😀

I wonder if you live somewhere the soil and water are very alkaline. Look for a grafted gardenia. They can be grafted to a rootstock that can tolerate alkaline soil. This is common in Florida. But you can still suffer from root rot etc,

Great video! I have had my gardenia topiary for almost 4 weeks and it has had about 8-10 blossoms open since I’ve had it. It is still in the plastic pot, the leaves are dark green but the blossoms turn yellow in one day and recently one bud did not completely open . It’s been in the 90s for 3 weeks now and I have to water it about every 2 days. It’s in an eastern window inside of my screened in porch. What am I doing wrong?
@gardeningthroughtheseasons
@gardeningthroughtheseasons 6 ай бұрын
@@karenmcdowell5940 Thanks for reaching out. As long as it has bright light and you are watering it when the top inch or so of soil is dry, you are probably not doing anything wrong. It doesn’t like changes and needs to adjust. The flowers naturally yellow as they age by the way. Don’t place it in scorching sun. Don’t use water from a water softener. These can be tricky. I wish you success 😀

No, sorry. “Lime” if you mean calcium carbonate which is often applied to soil outdoors, is the wrong PH for gardenia. It is alkaline and gardenia like acidic soil. Let the soil dry out more and it could recover. Happy gardening 😀

Help! I'm on my second plant and this one is getting droopy. I have not over watered it but when I re potted it I couldn't find an acid soil fertilizer, so I just potted it in regular soil. What can I do at this point to make sure it doesn't die??
@gardeningthroughtheseasons
@gardeningthroughtheseasons 10 ай бұрын
Hmmmm. If it is droopy, is it too dry? Did it get droopy just after repotting it? You potted it in regular soil; was it potting soil or did you dig the soil from the garden? If it just got droopy after repotting, probably some of the roots got damaged and it can’t pull up enough water. I usually cut it back a bit after transplanting it so that the roots don’t have so much to support. However, if the soil is wet and it’s droopy, it could have root rot, and you will likely lose the plant. Don’t give up. These plants aren’t too expensive and practice makes perfect. For soil, if you can’t find an acidic mix, just use one that is mostly peat and has some pumice to aid drainage. I hope this helps.

@gardeningthroughtheseasons
@gardeningthroughtheseasons Жыл бұрын
I am sorry to hear that. That would be frustrating. A change can cause these to lose buds, like being moved to a new location. It will need to adjust to its new location. If it is not getting enough light, that can cause bud drop. It will not survive far from a window. When it is blooming, it’s best not to fertilize it, that can cause bud drop. Do you turn down the heat at night; they like that, and that can make the plant more comfortable. I hope these tips help.
