I keep natural planted tanks, but you won’t see me shitting on strangers for buying gear and medicines, quarantining everything they buy, and cycling their tanks without microfauna from natural sources. There’s more than one way to skin a cat, and it’s very tiring when people are convinced that they have the gospel truth on fish keeping. If we all agree on everything, we’ve ceased to think critically. This hobby reminds me of line cook culture. Egos and closed minds getting in the way of the passion that started it all. Shitty.

@@arnoldmmbb they don’t; they live in rice paddies, which are very vast. From multiple sources I have gathered that the MINIMUM size of a betta tank should be 5, or even 10 gallons. Ideally shallow, but no actual maximum size.

Firstly the tank is too small for the betta. Secondly bettas aren't decorations, you could've also just put the root in a jar and at last if you gonna put a fish in a tank, especially one that sice you need a break-in periode. Otherwise it's really unstable and the nitrit peak can kill your fish.

That poor betta. Those things are just too stubborn to die so they endure the worst conditions before they finally kick the bucket. Sometimes I wish they weren't as hardy as they are just so they can be treated better. My boy has a 125L tank with many plants, hiding spots and his favourite floating log. There are a few glowlight tetras, peppered corys and snails. Seeing this makes me sad that not all bettas get a paradise like my boy gets. They're such clever and inquisitive little fish

Well the plant feeds off the nitrates and ammonia in the water produced by the fish waste. Plants and animals need each other to survive. They all play a part in the ecosystem, including microscopic life. The tank is small, but he has the java fern and the potato taking up all the "toxic" stuff to the fish and produces oxygen for the fish in the tank. Most lakes and ditches where these guys are found don't have filters or aeration, just plants and microfauna/microflora to inhabit. They are poor swimmers and need still/low flow water to swim in due to those big fins. Research, my love. Father fish does a great job explaining the biological needs and habits of betta fish. I keep mine in larger tanks but same with plants growing within and out of the top of it

@@bho30758 pet chains are awful, they also keep cat's in a 3x3 steel box all day. If you go to a privet owned fish shop, Beta's are usually kept in a 3-5 gal tank, and then placed in a smaller bag only when you take it home. They might cost more, but they care about the animal and their fish tend to not only survive more often, but also live a bit longer then one's you find in a plastic cup at a pet store.

I put lava rock halfway up in a small inside aquarium hanging filter. The water circulation brings all the nutrients to the plant if you snap off the sweet potato vines at the side of the potato, my ancestor farmed in North Carolina, and they mixed the sandy soil with cow manure to give good nutrition to sweet potatoes. I do a lot of cuttings of any kind of plant I want to root and put it in with hang on filter. I just checked the roots every week.

People are blowing this way of out of proportion, mostly from owners of tanks that are less than a year or two. Ideally a larger tank is nice, but this is doable if it’s the only fish. Betta fishes don’t require aeration, they are known for being able to breathe air directly. That tank doesn’t need filtration either because whatever waste produced is getting uptake by that Java fern and potato is more than enough for a fish that size.

Looking again Betta will probably mistake the roots as whatever other food they feed especially if it's worms dried or not. Also not to even mention the AMOUNT of roots taking up half the cage...there's a reason we only saw the betta ONCE....mfs fins are sensitive and are supposed to grow long and flowly but this one won't and it'll end up patchy and ehite where it shouldn't BECAUSE ITS FINS W I L L GET CAUGHT. I worry about store bought shid getting caught on my Betta let alone a string death trap. They are so sensitive

I know this, I have a natural turtle tank, although the plant may absorb harmful nitrates, ammonia, etc from the tank. It's still not going to siphon up big ass pieces of shit or plant matter...

That fish is fine... Bettas are Loner Fishes, Second That 5g tank is way enough for a 2.5Inch fish. He doesnt get stressed, diseases, or even die. So that's a fine enviorment for it. (Roots act as Air supplier and Natural Filtration, maybe more aeration could be better)

It's surprising to see that bettas are the most mistreated and abused fish in the world. Bettas live in big rice puddles and they are big. I just really hate the stereotype where people say that bettas live in small puddles.

The fish surviving doesn't mean it's living its best life. This is a captive bred betta which were meant to be in atleast 5 gallon tank but if you want it to thrive then get a 10 gallon tank and you can add tankmates like shrimps or snails. This tank seems really small and I don't think it's suitable for any fishes.
