It's very possible it is a type of caterpillar. I've found a few army worms around our tomatoes. A spray with bt nay do the trick. It is an organic bacterial harmless to animals and people but deadly to caterpillars.

I accidentally ended up with a tomatillo plant. I only have 1 and it is setting fruit. The first one is busting out the husk now. I do have tomatoe plants close, not sure if that is what is used to pollinate or not. Curious to she how it tastes, still trying to decide what to do with it.

I'm growing tomatillos for the first time this year. They appear to be doing well, but are far from splitting their husks and frosts will be coming any time in the next month. Is there anything to do if you run out of time if frost hits before tomatillos are fully ripe?
@Growingthehomegarden
@Growingthehomegarden 4 жыл бұрын
You could try transplanting to a large pot and bringing indoors or put a covering over them on the frost days and nights. I would opt to put a covering of some kind over it and give them time to grow.

I have tomatillos this year and it's gone crazy with husk. But no big fruit yet. Still little guys inside. I have frost coming and I'd like to give these guys a fighting chance. The plant is still flowering. Should I prune it back to let it focus on what's there now? I would have to prune it back quite a bit. Any thoughts?
@Growingthehomegarden
@Growingthehomegarden 2 жыл бұрын
I would give it a light trim and perhaps pick off any flowers blooming to transfer energy to the fruit. Also you may want to consider a little covering of some kind for the first couple frosts and see it you can help it last a little longer. Here in TN we often will get a frost then have a couple weeks of good weather without a frost. So if you can make it past that you can still harvest a little. I'm not sure where you are though so your weather patterns may be different.

Thanks for sharing your video!! I'm surprised my tomatillo plants are back from last year. They're growing like yours. Do u have any natural ideas for pests!! I've been using cinnamon. I saw it on Pinterest I.think?? Also I love a good salsa Verde but this year I decided since I get so many I'm gonna dehydrate them then crush them into a powder and as I need green tomatillo sauce add some to water... Similar to any dehydrated tomato sauce. I guess. I haven't tried it yet!! One more think you can cook any kind of meat and veggies, onions etc and slice raw tomatillos and throw them in you dish for a beautiful yummy tangy flavor!!
@Growingthehomegarden
@Growingthehomegarden 4 жыл бұрын
For natural pest control it really depends on what is targeting your plants. In general a Bt is good for fighting off things that eat the leaves. It's a bacteria that when they consume it poisons them from the inside. Bees and pollinators aren't effected since they don't eat the leaves. Neem oil is natural and can be used to fend off fungal diseases. I used that this year along the stem of our squash plants and held off the squash vine borers. Cinnamon is an antifungal that can be used over soil to eliminate fungal gnats since it takes away their food source. The list of natural pest control can get quite long!

My tomatillos are being attacked mercilessly by spidermites. I use these to make a Colorado style Green Chili that is fantastic. But The florida heat and humidty makes these not last very long. Second set getting ready to go in. Using isopropyl alcohol and diatomaceous earth spray to try to eliminate spidermites
@Growingthehomegarden

Insecticidal soaps usually work well against spider mites. Neem oil may help. You would need to apply every 3 days to make sure you completely interrupt the spider mite life cycle.

Don’t chop before roasting. Roast whole with hatch chilis, Anaheim peps, jalapenos and poblanos. Also a cool trick is to roast some romas. Like 90-95% tomatillo then a small amount or romas that will give your salsa depth and a touch of color. When done roasting put into a container and wrap with plastic wrap to let the peppers steep for as long as you can, 20-40 minutes this helps the skin pealing process. Also roasting garlic and a mixture of red and white onions doesn’t hurt. Add red wine vinager, sugar, salt, cilantro and lime juice. Enjoy!!

I live in Japan and have been growing tomatillos on a small farm I have here for many years. Here in Japan, we have a major rainy season, so farmers here cover their tomatoes to keep the rain off of their tomatoes. Since tomatillos are related to the tomato family, do they need to be sheltered from too much rain? Also, much of my tomatillo fruit is no bigger than a large cherry tomato. When I lived in California, my tomatillos were always as big as a medium sized tomato. How can I improve the size of my tomatillos? How should I fertilize? Should I trim back tomatillos like I do with tomatoes to improve crop volume and quality? I would appreciate any advice anyone has. By the way, summer weather in Japan is very hot and quite humid. Not sure if that contributes to tomatillo size.

According to my mother there are different varieties of tomatillos. Some grow big and some stay small. Her favorite are the variety that stays small because they are less acidic than the larger ones. I would research varieties and find out which type you're growing.
