In this video I grow Trachycarpus fortunei palms from seed. Trachycarpus Fortunei is one of the few palms that can grow in areas with cold winters and cool summers. In this video I show the method that I use to germinate these seeds, as they are temperature palms they need a cold period to break their dormancy before they will germinate.

I tried growing Trachycarpus from seed this year. I collected about 5000 seeds from the garden have stored most but managed to germinate a couple of hundred (close to 100% success rate). All are now about 7in tall some with 2 leaves some just 1. I now need to find somewhere for them to go so have given lots to neighbours and taken some to work. I used a kitchen fork to separate them. Like you I found some with root but no shoot when I repoted them. Enjoyed the video I am in Sussex

I haven't had the experience that you have to get them a cold treatment like with a lot of conifers. Usually you harvest the seeds in winter or just before spring and you can immediately sow them. Fluctuating temperatures are actually a good thing to promote germination with a lot of plants in my experience, but the trick for Trachys is also to not get the seeds too hot. They will germinate easily within a month (when fresh) with room temperature and I wouldn't go much over 25°C. Growth rates seem to vary a lot with all the subvariations and of course weather conditions. I would recommend to pot them before the roots are hitting the ground of the germination container. I'd also choose deeper pots right away because they need depth rather than width. Oh and they are only slow in their first years. As soon as they develop a trunk that has the final circumference you only need to give them food and water and sun and they will thrive like crazy! They can give you 30cm + of trunk each year! Cheers!

Under the most perfect ideal conditions, such as parts of New Zealand and Southern Australia, Trachycarpus palm trunks , in well watered well fertilised gardens, can sometimes grow up to 3 feet, about one metre per year. But growth rates between one and 2 feet per year of trunk height is more common, once trees are established. Although they do NOT want permanently wet feet, they can tolerate some amount of consistently wet soils. I have one planted by my front door that was, at first, growing albeit slowly. Then we noticed the adjacent neighbour's front lawn, grass dying off being replaced my mossy things and consistently wet. Sometimes water spilled over her concrete path when there was no rain ! For several years my Trachycarpus palm grew quickly indeed. Turns out an old colonial settler's well, steel bore pipe from 100 odd years ago which had been "capped" but the capping had rusted through. There is enough natural artesian pressure in this area that water was slowly bubbling up the old pipe and weeping under the soil surface. Neighbour's boyfriend dug out around the old pipe and re-capped it stopping the water escaping. Personally I'd rather have a tap/faucet there now, so I could get myself some chemical free water to drink, as Government has forced our local council to unnecessarily add Chlorine to our drinking water, and soon they will be forced to add Fluoride also, despite the wishes of the local populace. Not sure if Scotland will get a whole foot per year of trunk growth, of course at 58 Degrees North, they do get LONG Summer days, much longer than we do in NZ or Southern Australia.

I'm growing date palms from seeds atm. A grower told me you can get palms to grow large faster by putting them in deep pots. They have long tap roots that like to grow down and in my experience so far the roots grow very quickly first, then it makes fronds.

Yes that's true, if the roots get restrained the plants will grow slower.

Pro tip for anyone watching this: You can make a palm tree grow much faster with consistant watering and the correct soil mix. Trachycarpus will grow in any soil type, but they will grow the fastest (from what I've found) if you use a sandy mix with some compost mixed in. Water them every couple of days (depending on plant and pot size) and give them a slow release fertilizer every three months with a weak liquid feed every two to four weeks (depending on temperature). A single leaf seedling can get to a point where it has full fronds (if you give it enough root space and proper care) within 12-24 months. The main factors that effect this time are discussed above, but also it is light and heat dependant. Grow them outdoors in summer, but under glass in winter. They don't like getting TOO hot, keep them at or around 26-30 if you can help it. Don't keep them under glass if you are getting temps over 26 outdoors, or else they will actually stunt.

Also, little known fact, deeper pots are better than wider pots for palm trees. 5L tall pots, or "rose pots" are generally the best for trees that you want to keep around 1-3 feet.

Why don’t you use tweezers when separating those seedlings.🌱 Less chance of damage to the seedlings.😃

Thanks for the full description, about to have a go. I may stratify them in the fridge at a constant 4 Celsius rather than leave them to the 'should I, shouldn't I cover them outdoors. Here in Nottinghamshire winters tend to be wet rather than consistently cold.

Hi there. I’m wondering when it’s the best time to take the seed of the palm to seek them in water… our palm is growing in Germany. Are they any advices?

I planted this last winter from a whole seed branch with about 100 berries. Now i have about 20 green leafs coming out of the ground. Is each leaf one individual tree or will all of them form one tree one day?
@Gardeningat58N
@Gardeningat58N Жыл бұрын
Each leaf is an individual seedling which will become a palm tree. You will need to separate them and pot each one up into its own pot so that it has space to grow.

Carefully separate them before thier roots get too tangles together. They don't do well if grown too closely together.

Would I be able to hydrate and germinate my seeds in the fridge? Since it’s summer, and I wanted to cultivate some of these to weave with the fibers from the trunk

@Gardeningat58N
@Gardeningat58N 2 жыл бұрын
It depends on where your planting them, if you have an area of empty soil that you always keep weed free and away from animals then you can plant them in the ground in the first summer when they have around three leaves. However usually I would say wait for a small trunk to start appearing and the plant should be growing some mature leaves before planting into the ground, so this would usually be two to three years.
