This video reports on recent successes growing Trovita sweet oranges as in-ground plantings outside in the Pacific Northwest. The growing system is identical to that already described for growing lemons and limes (see link below). A hot, full-sun south-facing wall with a glass overhang was found to provide a favourable environment to consistently produce an abundant harvest of high quality fruits. In this outdoor environment, the oranges require a significantly longer period to develop adequate sugar content and typically ripen between August and May about 18-24 months after bloom.

Hi Ella, Nanaimo is a lot colder, you may want to email Bob and Verna. You could grow under full cover or in a green house maybe?

Greetings from SW England, UK! Absolutely love these fascinating videos, brilliant presentation and so informative especially for people like myself who grow them in a different country but with a very similar climate. For the past 20 years, I have grown Oranges, Blood Oranges, Mandarins, Satsumas, Lemons, Yuzu’s, Limes, Grapefruits and Kumquats, also Olives etc. Looking forward to the Mandarin upload, stay safe and many thanks again! Wow. This man is amazing. I will be trying something like this except my winters are cold so I want to breed my own sweet orange with poncirus genetics. This will hopefully help me so I won’t graft and if the branches die the graft won’t fail

When you say your winters are so cold what do you mean? Bob’s ain’t exactly balmy, yet the average winter low temperature in his microclimate is never below freezing. If you go just 10 miles inland from his location it becomes far too cold for the citrus he grows. I live in the central Willamette Valley in western Oregon, and my winters are slightly cooler than his, and I’m nearly 300 miles south of Vancouver Island. The advantage I gave here in the Willamette Valley is that my summers are loads warmer than Vancouver Island. We are around and we’ll into the 80’s by May and stay that way until October. So we have a huge advantage for ripening the citrus. The downside is I don’t have the ocean to moderate the winter lows. We don’t ever average below 34 in any winter month, but it’s not unheard of to hit 18 degrees. During most winters our coldest mornings are around 20, so citrus like the sudachi and ichandrin yuzu do very well. I also have success with meiwa kumquat, dunstan grapefruit and carrizo orange. I also grow more frost sensitive cultivars, but I use a greenhouse for those. I don’t mess around by trying to expose meyer lemon trees and satsumas to temps below 20. Even with a cover and lights they still don’t like it at all. What zone are you in? And what area of the country? Not all zones are created equal. For instance, I’m in 8b here in western Oregon, the same as areas of southern Georgia and Texas. The thing is, the Oregon zone 8b is kind of a fluke. We are at 45 degrees North latitude, north of Toronto. We are only mild here in Oregon because of the Ocean and the mountains. Without those this place would be a zone 5 or 6. So even though we can ‘get by’ with the subtropical frost sensitive plants, they don’t thrive in the same way they do in the zone 8’s you find down south. Still a fantastic region to have such mild weather where it isn’t bleeding hot and humid. Anyway, I wish you luck, but I would encourage you to get a greenhouse if you want to grow citrus in a zone below 7. If you are in zone 7 you might be able to grow yuzu outdoors with protection, but I doubt you can grow any other citrus besides a poncirus. Email me back if you want to discuss.

I love this video. I think it's so important to experiment and push the limits on growing things previously thought impossible in your area. We do the same in Phoenix, Arizona and it is exciting when things are successful. Keep growing and trying! Thank you for sharing, that is a beautiful orange tree.

I have a couple of Kiyomi Tangors that seem to do pretty well in our climate. I'm in SW Washington they have proven themselves Hardy to at least 17degrees Fahrenheit for me they are a cross between Trovita and satsuma mine haven't fruited for me yet but the trees themselves seem to do well.
