The bread when I was a kid was delicious as well as nutritious, all the jam was home made, looking at this has brought back great memories, thanks.

ROFL!!! Yep, 10 miles, and the snow was 10 feet deep, and they didn't have any shoes to wear, and they ended up being late, so they'd get their asses whipped with a hickory switch and sent home, and then had to do that whole routine all over again the next day was the version I used to hear!!

I love how toast w butter and jam, or porridge, plus a cup of tea, was the breakfast .. how much has it changed today in Aus? Hardly! ... even and a cooked breakfast on occasional weekends, like the Saturday fry up, also the takeway dinner on the weekend that lasts a week.. interesting how it all feels familiar even though I've never seen this doco, nor had a history lesson of the early times

In the early 20th century, some kind of porridge or also called mush, toast and other simple things like bacon. Soups with root vegetables like turnips, carrots, potato could be in rotation. Dried beans too. Basically food that does not need advanced refrigeration.
