Every food plot on my property was created in a similar fashion, so I can appreciate the amount of work even an 1/8 acre plot requires!

Wow, you answered so many questions I had about clearing a small area for a food plot among a pretty dense, mature forest. I was overwhelmed before watching this. Thanks.

Great video. I'm looking forward to seeing more on this food plot. I got the chainsaw out this morning and started cutting my first hidey hole. I still have a long way to go and I don't know if I'll get to plant this year but I'm looking forward to seeing how it does. I'm in middle Tennessee and my woods look very similar to the area of the proving grounds shown in this video.

Do do you think there is still time to sneak in a hidey hole food plot before deer season? I assume this video is not filmed to long ago, I've never tried one before, but really want to after watching these videos about it this year. These would help improve my small property (44 ac.) that is mostly closed canopy forest. I hope the whole team is doing well! Looking forward to seeing the growing deer teams season this year! God bless!

Sure! Some crops need 45 days before the first frost and others continue to grow when it's cold.

What is the herbicide for spraying the trees? sorry if someone already asked this.....thank you! Great video
@GrowingDeerTV2 жыл бұрын
Ryan - We often use 50% Garlon 3A, 40% water, and 10% Arsenal AC. Some folks use Crossbow - which is a commercial blend.
@timothyhendershott9333 Жыл бұрын
Thanks for the video. This will be my first spring project. What herbicide do you use to stunt the cut trees? Thanks again. Tim
@GrowingDeerTV Жыл бұрын
TIm - Which herbicide to use depends on the tree species to be terminated. Glyphosate works on most oaks but rarely controls hickories.

Will the next step before planting be a burn to remove leaf litter and stumps?

What kind of herbicide did you guys use on the saplings after you cut them?

Hey grant and Daniel, Are you guys hunting on the new piece of land you all starting working on or the original piece you all are trying to sell, just curious.

Zach - This plot is on the new land - The Proving Grounds 2!
@jarrettmims4522 жыл бұрын
What are you spraying on the stumps
@GrowingDeerTV2 жыл бұрын
Jarrett - It depends on the tree species. A mix of 50% Garlon 3A, 40% water, and 10% Arsenal AC works for many hardwood species.
@zachphillips47432 жыл бұрын
Just curious, why leave a stump and not cut it flush with the ground?
@GrowingDeerTV2 жыл бұрын
Zach - The stump allows us to push them out easier when they start to rot.

At what point is it to late to do preparations like this for the season, that it will start to effect your hunt? I'm in Ohio. Bow season starts the end of September. Are the preparations your doing for next year? Or are you planning to hunt that area this year?
@xboxsavage11752 жыл бұрын
You can probably do it for this season you just need to get on it as soon as possible. You also have to make sure you are around 60 to 45 days before first frost. If you can’t get it done before that then you should just plant oats or winter rye
@GrowingDeerTV2 жыл бұрын
Hugh - I'd rather make a bit of disturbance and end up with a great hunting location than wait. You are fine to start now!
@BeauBruce-m3p11 ай бұрын
How long does it take for the herbicide to rot the stumps?
@GrowingDeerTV11 ай бұрын
I don't think a few millimeters of herbicide cause stumps to rot.
@Treyno942 жыл бұрын
Is the only reason you use the sponge brush is to save herbicide?
@GrowingDeerTV2 жыл бұрын
To spill less - and place the herbicide where we want it. Spraying results in herbicide going places it sounded.
@scottnovak9662 жыл бұрын
Daniel, I'm sure this will come out in a future video , but how do you prepare the soil for planting with all those stumps? I assume you will burn to remove the leaf litter.
@GrowingDeerTV2 жыл бұрын
Scott - Correct - we burn the leaves, etc., and broadcast around the stumps!
@scottnovak9662 жыл бұрын
Do you do anything to the ground to help seed contact ? For a lack of better word scare or score it to help the seed make contact.

Why didn’t you burn your cut brush in the plot you lost a lot of beneficial nutrients from that ash

There was too much green biomass to burn quickly and we needed to get the plot planted. You are correct - if we had time that would have been a good plan!
